Yes, But if some one else removed the engine you won't know the reverse order of reinstalling it. But you can still do it. Replacing the valves you will need a valve spring compressor other then that it's not a hard job.
a couple of years ago i discarded the electric solenoid and installed a lever that pulls the little " spool " out to make the gears 100 % engage . i operate the lever with my left hand and have the starter motor on a button and ford starter relay . its an idea that i stole from old harleys .
i solved that shit years ago for free . i put a homemade plunger thru the side of the ' rocker ' assembly cover and i give the little plunger a sideways kick with my left foot when i crank the engine . the plunger is just a brass fitting with a 1/4 inch bolt running thru it . makes the gear engage and keeps it engaged .
Its the flywheel as well in many cases. The idler is a problem dont get me wrong but the best fix is to remove the flywheel and have the teeth resurfaced before you install the new idler #2 gear.
Yes man there is. What year is it? the early starters have a short shaft, later ones are longer. Depends if the noise is coming from the starter motor or the gears. My guess is your #2 idler gear has sheared some teeth and has trouble engaging the flywheel. take your left hand engine case cover off and have a look at the teeth. Yamaha offers a starter gear kit with the updated new parts needed. Let me know if you need any help.
ok its a 1982!!!!!!!!!!!! i love the bike it runs well but has the problem, i have it next week, just want ot know if there is a permant fix for it.. everything i have read so far says 1982 was a bit tought to sort any more advice Shawn, and thank you for your time x
One more small little thing. The flywheel could be altered where the gears meet the flywheel gear could be shaved as a ramp to make the gear slide in easier. Being careful of course not to over do it.. just a thought, and maybe a little idea...
Question: why is it that a tiny piece of gear gets chewed off,it's gotta buy a new one,and there's still a lot of teeth on it? Nobody tries to figure out a permanent salutation fro the problem. I studied it good and long, and found out #1 the spring is not letting the gear move in all the way. #2 the gear has to fight to get into the flywheel. I cut a little off the spring and it starts better and if the gear was about a 1000th smaller i bet it would work even better. Think hard about it,lets eliminate this problem, and stop buying brand new gears, because a little bit chewed off stops it from starting.
back to the frame and rewire it. Also fix the main problem is the exhaust valve. What do you think? Please give me some pointers, thank you for your time sir.
Great video! Looking at the OEM starter clutch diagram. There is a "number 9" QTY 2 collar needed for the starter clutch assembly. Will you please confirm that both collars are likely embedded into the stator cover and the back side of the starter clutch? I'm having an issue with gear number 6 pressing behind my starter and cutting into the metal.
Iv'e had a question where does the O-ring go. What looks like an O-ring next to some parts in the video is the circlip that retains the starter clutch.
I'm guessing by 49107 that you are from Buchanan? I'm in TR. I haul the mail from GR back to Kzoo so I know a few of the zips, lol. I have an 04 v-star 1100 and I've been thinking that the noise I hear is from the starter clutch. When starting, it makes a high pitched whine before the motor starts turning over, is that what yours was doing? I ride with a motorcycle ministry out of Kzoo and the guys have to wait until I get mine started. I want to fix this soon.
can you please email me what you have explained in video clip so I do not know English and can translate with google. virago xv750se I second the 81-83 and have the same problem starting mechanism and I found no solution , two years looking for a change or something. thank you.
okay, I am in the exact same situation. i order the superseded part and have a 1992 xv1100. you dont need the spring at all? how does it engage the flywheel without the force of positioning it in there? AND i was under the influence that you had to also purchase the starter clutch assembly in order to make the new superseded part fit? please respond with help
Hi! I have a 1993 year model and it has that issue where gear does not engage properly sometimes. Teeth are still good so no need to replace that. Can I remove the spring or should I just cut it shorter? TIA.
I have a question. I opend the left Side Cover because i have a broken stator. As i removed the Cover, an o-ring droped to the Floor an i cant find Infos about the place where it is build-in. In your Video there is a o-ring in the opper right Side on the Sheet in the Tablet. I think Thats the o-ring im looking For. May you Help me? I'm despairing
Hi Jan, I'm not sure if you mean broken starter or broken stator since both are under the same left side cover plate. And what year and model do you have? What is the diameter of the O-ring.
will this fit a 82 virago 920? can I get the part in Colorado Springs, CO I've done the weld on ring fix and no problem engaging. It does not want to dis-ingage quickly and grinds. any solution? Do others have this problem?
I am trying to get my crank case off of my 86 xv1100. I don't have a clymer manual, but is their any tricks to getting the damn thing off? the starter keeps tying me up.
I have a 81 Virago 750. I bought the Yamaha Virago starter clutch, New superseded part. and it does not fit. It does not allow us to put the cover back on.
Greetings. Just found your video. I have a 1982 XV920R. Two questions. 1. How does the idler gear disengage from the main rotor gear once the engine starts without the spring to push it back? 2. Would you think the original idler gear would work any better by just not using the supplied spring?
Another youtuber flips the gear to use the other side that hasn't been worn but still uses the spring. "The *Free* yamaha virago starter bendixen gear fix trick"
@@cowboy49107 I might try this. I just want to make sure that the idler gear won't walk back in into the spinning flywheel gear teeth while the engine is running. Thanks.
@@cowboy49107 I've seen that. I don't like that fix. The impact cushion on the gear is now on the wrong side and the clearance from the end of the gear to the gear teeth is wider so there is less engagement with the flywheel teeth.
Hello. I have also bought this set 3LP-W1551-00 for my 1989 Yamaha Virago XV750. The problem is that the new spiral part from the set is with 3mm longer than the old one and when assembling all together, I can't close the cover firmly. Please tell me if I'm missing something in my work?
Norm Steere Here are the two parts side by side tiny.cc/o94pgx on the left is NEW p/n 3LP-W1551-00 right is OLD p/n 5A8-15517-00-00. The difference is 3 mm - here is old one when combined - 55 millimeters tiny.cc/nj5pgx The new one when combined is 58 millimeters - tiny.cc/7l5pgx
Ивайло Филипов Ok I see what your saying, It looks like the collar in your pictures with the parts assembled is on backwards. Turn it around. It's item number 10 in the parts catalog. see link below. m.yamahamotorsports.com/PartsViewer.aspx#/Yamaha/VIRAGO_750_-_XV750W_-_1989/STARTER_CLUTCH/XV750W_(1989_MOTORCYCLE)/STARTER_CLUTCH_(XV750W_-_1989)
cowboy49107 Thanks cowboy for your help, but the problem of the 3mm difference in length remains because of the longer new spiral part - two parts side by side - tiny.cc/o94pgx The whole assembly is getting longer no matter that on the picture collar 10 is turned on wrong side. Is there something else that I'm missing...thanks again to all of you for your help ;))
I would try it, there's a video of a guy that did just that after installing a with a new idler gear, if I had seen what he did I would have tried using the old one with out the spring before buying the replacement set of gears. see "Yamaha Virago starter idler gear grind and repair" by mrmaxstorey
Hi there sir, there is an ads on cList selling this bike for $500, the engine is off of the frame and the exhaust valve needed to be replace. I have worked with 3 bikes so far a CBR F3 600 (change forks seal and oil, oil change and rebuild carbs.), 93 zx7 (also change forks seal, oil and oil change, wheel bearings and rebuild carbs), my latest bike is 2003 V star 2003 which i have change the oil, rebuild the carbs numerous of times. Armed with these skill do you think i'm competent to put engine

I have a 98 virago, when I hit the push start I hear the starter spinning, and I hear the solenoid making a big click, yet the motor does not spin. does this sound like a starter clutch issue?
Sorry for late reply, new phone issues. If you hear the starter spinning it sounds like a starter clutch issue. If everything is working right you won't even hear the starter spin, all you should hear is the immediate clunk of the starter clutch engaging and then the engine cranking over.
My starts won't stop cranking over even with the key off...I changed the relay thing but that didn't work...I popped the crank case off..everything looks ok..yeah the teeth are wore a little...do u think its just my starter?
HI I am having problems with my virago 1100 1994. when I press the start I hear it spinning the solenoid comes out and get stocked out. then if I rotate the engine manually it find its place and go back in. but after I press the start the same happens.... I open the cover and I press start and I can see the starter clutch spinning so that is working.... can someone tell me what might be the problem? (is in neutral, battery is good, and kill switch from the stand works) please help
hello i have 750 virago i think i have 5 mechanics visit my item to fix it but still hard to start anytime what te problem for this engine do think i need to buy engine or buy carb.
+luis antonio nuñez This new part does not fit your 1982 xv 750, you can verify this info by using this link and enter your motorcycle info. It looks like you can still buy replacement parts for your starter clutch but not this superseded part that is shown in the video.www.yamahamotorsports.com/partviewer/default.aspx?ls=sport
hello i don't if this can come on here but i have a 93 750 virago and when i start it in natural it starts then when i put it in 1st gear it stalls any help would be nice thanks
@@cowboy49107 are you sure. I also have a 93 xv1100, if you click on the starter clutch it shows a spring. The 94 does not show a spring and has that 3lpw1551 part number. I assumed that meant the new part works on the 94, and not the93
It does show the lp35w1551 for the 93, you are right. It shows the spring but when you click on the above part number it goes to the superceded number.
Joshua Tambauan yamahamotorsports.com Enter your bike info on that site and make sure it fits your specific Virago. I have not checked recently but when I first posted this it only fit a fraction of all the viragos out there.
