Rode my 1990 vmax from Missouri to Sturgis, and back in 2003... V-Boost definitely aided me in passing numerous dentists and the like, on their baggers, in the blink of an eye. Sadly, my girlfriend riding on the back, was not as appreciative or enamored with this show of force:)!

I have both Gen 1 and Gen 2. The V-Boost is akin to aircraft supercharging the cylinders with more fuel. The new system for the 2nd Gen uses variable length runners that manage air flow only. Here is Yamaha's description: "...Yamaha developed the YCC-T and YCC-I system employing the most advanced electronic control technologies. Electronic control throttle systems have been used on automobiles, but Yamaha has developed a faster, more compact system specifically for the needs of a sports motorcycle. The Yamaha-developed system has a high-speed calculating capacity that produces computations of running conditions every 1/1000th of a second. The YCC-T system is designed to respond to the throttle action of the rider by having the ECU instantaneously calculate the ideal throttle valve opening and generate signals to operate the motor-driven throttle valves and thus actively control the intake air volume. The ECU contains three CPUs with a capacity about five times that of conventional units, making it possible for the system to respond extremely quickly to the slightest adjustments made by the rider. In particular, optimized control of the throttle valve opening provides the optimum volume of intake air for easy-to-use torque, even in a high-revving engine. The YCC-I system calculates the value from the engine revolution number and throttle opening rate, activates the intake air funnel with the electronic control motor drive to control the intake pipe length in order to gain the high power output in all revolution ranges from low speeds to high speeds..." The stock V-Boost comes on at around 5,750 RPM as mentioned in the video. The new system gives me a kick when you fully open the throttle at any RPM, but you really have to peg the throttle to the open stop. It is not as intense as V-Boost, but more like vacuum secondaries on older cars.

In college I experimented with tuning the intake of a 200 straight 6 Ford engine to take advantage of pressure from closing valve. The engine was balance and blueprinted at an industrial machine shop by friends and moving parts were balanced using money scales. The combustion chambers were modified squish chambers designed for combustion under the intake valve (lowers octane requirements). This was in 1985. With the induction port tuning I noticed more (albeit mild) torque and less sensitivity of the engine to tuning and environmental variables. I performed a lot of experiments on that engine.

My "old school" '94 V-Max has the V-boost. It was my understanding that the way it works is air has inertia and when the intake valves shut there is somewhat of a compression of air behind the valve. When the butterfly valve opens it allows that supercharging effect to send the fuel/air mix to the companion cylinder. This only works above 6,000 RPM which is why the butterfly valve has a servo motor. Your newer V-max accomplishes the same effect by varying the length of the runner to allow more complete filling of the cylinder at higher speeds.

There are also four more injectors higher up in the intake that are supposed to be higher flow injectors. They start spraying when the velocity stacks lift. The real problem is that the stock settings in the ecm are ridiculous. There are several video on here about just how restricted it is and they remap the ecm for better results. I would like to see a dyno chart that investigates the YCCI's efficacy once and for all. The last video I watched shows how the stock settings limits throttle to 29 percent a full throttle. I want a full work up with remapped ecm and tuning with a power commander vision. It kinda pisses me off what they did but if it was all out most people would kill themselves on it so Yamaha was avoiding a widow maker for obvious legal reasons. The average buyer just buys it for the prestige and doesn't have any idea what it really is.

Jeff, on the 2011 Yamaha Roadliner there is a valve situated where the headers join just before the muffler ( it has a name, but can’t remember it lol ). When your riding around town the valve remains open however, when out on the highway depending on speed this valve closes somewhat. I’ve been told that this creates more back pressure thus allowing more horsepower. I’ve noticed that when doing highway speeds ( 110kph ) if you give it a fistful lots digs it’s heels in raises its skirt and just about rips you off your seat. This sounds like a later version of your V Boost. Informative video Jeff from Down Under.

The longer and shorter intake change the airflow for better power in different ranges. Think of it not like more power in general but that you have more power over more RPM's. Old and very basic engines only have one perfect RPM. This feature also makes for a smoother idle and smoother high revs. In part this tech is partially responsible for why newer cars feel like they have more power with a smaller engine. When variable sized intake manifolds are paired with variable engine timing the result is great. Hope this helps.

We had the lower power non V Boost Max here in the UK in the 90's, lord knows why ?, Japan also had the lower power version and also a speed limiter (113mph i think ?), i recently got a nice, low mileage Full Power 95 Max, sadly the V Boost was not working, traced the fault to both the controller and servo, have the new (good, working used) parts there but still to fit them. Great bike though, absolutely love it. Greetings from Scotland.

Having owned both Gens 1 & 2, the 2001 Gen 1 is a super reliable bike that has taken me all over Canada, the U.S.A., and down through Mexico to Guatemala. I had no real issues. I had no complaints but advise you to be wary of used Gen 1s because the actual mileage is almost always shown as being on the lower half of 100,000 miles/kms and not in the upper half. Being the Gen 1s can be 36 years old, that is really hard to believe that they all have so little mileage. Just be aware and try to verify the mileage before your purchase. Check for worn pegs, grips, lots of modifications and overall condition. The Gen 2 has all of the good that the Gen 1 has, except heavier and no double kickstand; but it has so much more. EFI, 200 hp vs.145hp, handling is leap years ahead, gear indicator, computer-based rider information, and just overall it is much tighter, more powerful and more controllable in all ways. The mileage is locked in the computer so actual mileage figures are accurate and harder to falsify. Good luck on your future purchase.

My understanding of this feature is opposite to what you are saying. The length of the intake runners affect the torque vs. horsepower trade - off. With short intake runners the torque is increased and with longer runners the horsepower is increased . You need the torque at low rpm. getting off the line and you need the horsepower at higher rpm to achieve the speed. Again, as I understand it the funnels rise up at 6750 rpm. to increase the length of intake, not shorten as you have mentioned. The variable exhaust length has the same affect . Short makes better torque and longer makes better horsepower. Why this all works this way is beyond my knowledge. This has been discovered by racers long before me . Short vs. long tube headers, low vs. high - rise intake manifolds. Yamaha is trying to give us the best of two worlds and they certainly have done that ! ,

Sorry, try again. Listen starting at 4:20 again. The variable length tracts in turn vary the helmholtz frequency of the airbox. Longer tracts lower frequency. Shorter tracts higher frequency. Pickup a trombone and see for yourself.

Sounds more like an "efficiency" upgrade rather than a power booster. Otherwise, Yamaha would be spouting off about it for sure. Either way, each Gen has its pros & cons. Love the power, hate the weight & handling. The only reason I resist getting a 2nd Gen is the weight. If I want a 650lb ride, I'll take out my FJR S. Tourer. Around town I want something nimble and light. Unfortunately, both Vmax gens are neither of those. I'm looking at the Kawie Z900 & /rs. 450lbs & 120hp. Not as powerful, but 100-200lbs less (respectively) will add both nimbleness & power. I love my Gen 1, but I'm not as young and strong as I used to be.

I have a R1,R6,&R3 if I want to feel nimble and light. The vmax is actually quiet capable at 650lbs. Way more so than the 1st gen. The first gen is only capable of what the second gen is capable of after you throw a lot of money into suspension and brakes including a front end swap as well. I love both and want a first gen to have by my 2nd gen. The vmax is just awesome!!
