I bought one new in late 76 .. chocolate brown, 16 years old and a learners permit … that bike was my life for a couple of years til I upgraded to a Kawasaki Z1R 1000
Sometimes one man’s loss can mean a beautiful opportunity for another. I am picking one up soon for 500$. Lots of work needs to be done although it is still an amazing opportunity for a first bike. The older gentlemen selling it just wants to know it’s ridden, not being abused or resold around.
With that plug by the oil dipstick, that's a '78 model. It's the only year they did that, somehow it allows you to adjust the balancer chain tension. Mine is a '73, I'm the original owner, it required removing the case cover and pulling the rotor and starter drive in order to adjust that chain. Did that once, threw the starter drive in the trash before putting it back together, never had to pull the rotor again. Very clean bike, one of the nicer ones I've seen, but shouldn't be making that much noise, sounds like the balancer chain rattling.
Nice machine! A friend of mine had one; he asked me to ride it 20 miles back from a service once while he was at work. I thought this was a much 'leggier' and grown up bike than my own 400/4...
Szia.
