This little bike is a really pretty , very low miles '73/4 XS 500 Yamaha that came from my friend Bob Green in Ohio, whom I have dealt with for several years. It was a non runner that had been laid up for several years and one I didn't expect to make any videos around but when I started working through it , some great opportunities appeared around the carbs, fork legs, a badly seized front brake and just a need for just a little love to make it really smile again.
Hope you enjoy the vid and if you do, please subscribe . If you've any 60-s -70s bikes you want to find a new home for, please email me on rodcurrie88@gmail.com and I'll get back to you
Thanks for watching, Rod

I owned a 73 TX500 while going to school in Dallas back in the mid-70s... mine looked just like this one. I rode it many times from Dallas over I-20 to LA Hwy 1 (this was before I-49) and down to my parent's home in Baton Rouge and back. It ran like a Swiss watch... rock solid and very reliable. This video really brought back the memories... thanx!

Hey there from the UK. Spent a lot of time Stateside riding off the slab ( TransAm Trail, CD ride etc) but haven\t made it to Tx or Florida on the bike...though I did key West to New Jersey in a car once. This is a lovely bulletproof little example and rides so well. Tons of grunt for a early 70s 500 twin.....much more than a triumph T100-and doesn't leal oil like a Brit bike probably would. Thanks for watching. Rod

@@rodcurrieclassics8102 Good point on the Trumpet... my brother had a Tiger and my Yamadog was faster, more reliable and rode much better with a passenger.

Subscribed from Australia. Now aged 64 going on 65, this was my first road bike on learners plates! However it was absolute mint and cost me AU$800.00 back in 1977 (AU$5,330.30 in 2023 equivalent). It had never been ridden in the wet and had maybe 4,500KM's on it. My recent purchase is a 2020 Yamaha XSR900 in their white/red scheme with 7,000KM's and it's just GORGEOUS. I do not miss 1 litre sportbikes at all! @@rodcurrieclassics8102

Yeah. Sweet little bike and rides like new. Normally 70s Yams not quite the quality of Hondas from the same time but this one has been loved and survived well. Thanks for watching. Rod

You can swap things around on the front end so as to relocate the brake caliper behind the fork. A little more stable at high speeds.

Hi there.. I do tend to avoid high speeds on these old girls and just respect them - though I had this one to 80 which I felt was quick enough. It's a sweet little example. Thanks for watching.

@Rod Currie Classics You bet. I had a Yamaha Blue'74 I rode in '76-78. It wasn't such an old girl back then, of course. The fastest I ever went was 110, on the highway west of Salt Lake City. I had to see what she'd do. At that speed, it was just beginning to feel a little squirrelly, so I cooled it. I think some of the later models came with the calipers behind the forks. Anyway, thanks for the post, I enjoyed it. And I still miss that Bike.

110! Good man!! :0). This little bike was still on its original tyres and hadn't run for donkeys years but soon fired up and is SO sweet. 74-76 eh?...none of us were such old guys/girls then. Now its tin knees, bald heads and blood pressure. But still love bikes just as much as ever despite the tumbles and broken bones. Just about enough sense finally, to avoid sports bikes. Ride safe Sir.

Good job. I got buzzed by one in the seventies when I was plodding around on my '46 BSA C11. The silly sod was doing 70-80 mph.

Well....fancy that! A disgrace!! Can the human body stand that sort of speed? Luckily few Brit bikes have ever been known to hold together long enough to achieve it. When they do the rider gets a knighthood for bravery if he can survive by stop the heap on its wooden brakes. :0)

I bought one of these for about £100 years ago seized solid ! Took me hours to drift out the pistons ! The cams were worn to nothing , I managed to get a set of pistons from Rafferty Newman but could only get new cams , £300 !!!! Rare bike over here then . The pistons were new about a fiver each but couldn't get any other parts except new would have cost £100s . Sold it for what it cost me , I've had about 3 xs650s , you can get parts for those , nice but awful handling. Regards Will

They're pretty rare still Will. Rarer still with 6700 miles. I had a TX 650 a couple of years ago. Styling was nice but I can't say I adored the bike. It was OK...no more. Thanks for watching

@@rodcurrieclassics8102 I’m very jealous, it’s a fine looking bike. I had a wonderful XS650 it was mint, should never have sold it. That was 25 years ago though.

Yeah...we all have. bagfull of those don't we . In about '79 I had a '75 RS 2000 with 19000 miles on it. Bought it rolled and did a bodyshell swap. Sold it for £2200...I'd get £60K for it now . C'est la vie eh?

@@rodcurrieclassics8102 Yes mine is a Mk1 facelift Capri O/H Cam. Mine was a 74....I owned 87/8. Not a spot of rust on it and 40K miles. Most had rotted long before but mine had been nursed and kept mint. I sold it for £350 which was cheap even then. If I had kept it for whatever reason? I think I would be looking at £20+K now! That’s the way it works though, who would’ve guessed that those cars that we sold for such paltry amounts would become so valuable? The best I have heard is Nick Mason from Pink Floyd. He bought a Ferrari 250 GTO in 78 for £35K. A phenomenal amount then.....but it’s now worth £40 million. He turned down £30 million for it in 2010!

You hit the nail right on the head Keith. The build quality of 60s/70s cars was appalling and they all just dissolved. Its why there's none left. Conversely ( and paradoxically) the quality of 70s Japanese bikes was so good there 's quite a lot still about and they can be had for a few grand

Hi, Rod , enjoyed the video, "busy man" I have an identical machine, lovely condition but a little noisy top end for my liking, I have carried out the timing chain adjustment procedure ,next will be the valve clearance. I am having a bit of a hard time trying to find out what grade of oil to use. I have seen 20/50 mentioned quite a lot ,does that sound about right to you? Dave,

why don't you use a wire wheel on one end of a bench grinder?. it would save you a lot of time and effort in removing the crud, instead of those strips of emery.I use mine all the time and they are really great for cleaning up bolts, nuts etc, prior to hope re-plating..
@rodcurrieclassics8102
@rodcurrieclassics8102 2 года назад
My bench grinder is tied up on grinding and fine polishing duty....but I may yet put a wire wheel on it. Goggles a must you'll agree as I used bench grinder thus equipped as a young engineer and flying wires and debris is dreadful stuff. Thanks for watching

Of course it is but many people don't know what a TX is , but recognise the generic XS handle so although it's less correct, it would get more recognition for a great little bike. Thanks for watching
