The retro craze takes hold of Yamaha's new motorcycle. But does 1960s styling belong on a 2016 sportbike? Or is the hipster XSR900 simply lost in time? RyanF9 revs Yamaha's latest "Sport Heritage" to find out.

I couldn't agree more. I think the production values of this channel easily match what a lot of channels with dedicated production staff are putting out, and in a lot of cases beat them, and for a channel of this size, brilliant.

This is where I need a clap emoji. Fantastic work sir, but judging by the comments you already know that. Seeing the production value like this out of a RU-vid channel is what TV channels need to be worried about. Keep the reviews coming!

The line where he says "If I wanted a naked sportbike, I would get a naked sportbike". I think he just solved it without realizing it. It is a full fledged naked sportbike. It just has more of a UJM styling approach.
@LunringNassar

Reason he didn't mention the MT09 and disapproved the XSR as a naked sportbike is that the XSR lacked some tech that the MT09 had. -No quickshifter

Thats actually a common problem with the Bitwell Gringo helmet... If you go to fast, the wind pushes up on the helmet. More style then safety. Pretty cheap helmet, cost $150 without a face shield and $200 with one.

I've found some pretty decent helmets for that price point. The Gringo is not one of them.

I cringed, just thinking of what would happen if he went down. I've raced a lot of downhill mountain bikes, and although hitting dirt roads and trails isn't entirely similar to pavement, I couldn't help but hold my breath and cringe when I saw his exposed chin.

This amazing video is what made me pull the trigger on the XSR900, it is indeed a lot of bike and can shame a few 600cc supersports off the line. but at the same time, it's comfortable and stylish, and doesn't give off any squidy vibe like the FZ09 it's based on or any other sport bikes.

Richie Montgomery My commute is 450 miles (at least once per month, for 2 to 20 days at a time). The city I live in half of the miles driven or ridden are highway. Most years only 15 to 20 days of real rain, and less than 10 days of snow or ice. I would also use the bike for road trips both interstate, and one round the world trip coming up. Do you think this bike seems appropriate to my use, based on that description? Thanks
@woutosse4430
@woutosse4430 4 года назад
@@Rick_Sanchez_C137_ Rick Sanchez C137 It'll work, but I don't think a 450 mile highway trip isn't something you'd really like on a naked. If you get a windscreen that'll fix a lot. A tourer will probably be better for the highway (Or a car..), but if you wanna lose some comfort on the highway for more fun, then go for it! I dont own the 900 but the 700 and love that one.

This Yamaha blew my mind with its intricate details and finishes like the headlight clamps, the nuts and bolts, the whole bunch of its machined parts and all of that for such a small price if compared to its European rivals. I loved it to bits. Indeed it doesn’t make too much sense but it is such a good bike that one true bike lover could not ignore. The moment I saw the 60th anniversary edition in yellow/black colour scheme I honestly regretted my latest acquisition made on impulse only three weeks earlier. It was too late for me to do something about it. Love your VDO

After having ridden the XSR900, I agree with your conclusion, somewhat. The bike's motor is stellar, power just builds upon itself all the way to redline. It's a beast much like the 5 valve FZ750 was back in 1985. Yet it's a retro bike. But what about the ride modes? If you find it too much, why not switch to B mode and leave it there? Now it's a more civilized retro bike and you have the options to go faster the days you feel like a hooligan.

It is the most complete motorcycle from a performance standpoint I have ever ridden, and by complete, I mean 500% of what I expected after watching all of the glowing reviews out there. I mean it has redefined what is possible. Obviously, then, I don't care whether it "finds itself" in a particular category or cross-over category, because it's just me a the bike out there enjoying that dance of danger and fun...but doing so without the normal limits that I had become accustomed to.

But really it all comes down to throttle control and self control. I started off in b mode tcs1 for all of the first 500 miles of break in then switched to std for the remaining break in period. Once break in was done I tried A and it’s been that way ever since now with 1,776 miles.

I agree with this review. And also think that is exactly why you should be getting the xsr700 instead. I rode the 900, thought the same things. Then noticed they had a 700. They let me take it to the demo track, and I took it home a couple of hours later. Less horsepower, no need for riding modes, etc. Riding it made me wonder why the 900 exists...and then I remembered that in the US, the amount of riders that believe "POWER" is everything. It's just wasted on this bike though. The 700 hits that perfect spot.

4 years later and still my favorite review of the bike :) Any chance we're going to see you on the revised 2021 MT-07 or the XSR 700 as others have asked for? Would really love to hear your opinion on the CP2 engine :) Thanks for all the great content!

Great production quality as always, however I disagree with your final statement. XSR900 is a pretty tame bike in B mode and as someone that came from cbr500r previously and is generally quite a relaxed rider, I do not find it intimidating or having too much power as a daily commuter. Standard or A mode are a different animal, however B mode is nice and relaxed around town. For me it scratches a lot of itches - it's fantastically cheap in Australia, especially when looking at second hand options. It has great power delivery, brakes, sound, and modes, etc. It's got a bit of a retro edge to it and does not look like a transformer. The biggest downside is probably suspension, but when comparing to the nearest retro inspired bike for a similar price, being Street Twin, the performance proposition is very much in Yamaha's favour

Yet another brilliant piece from FortNine. Opinionated but still objective, serious, yet amusing, and great to look at. This is one of the two or three best motorcycle channels on RU-vid and better than a hell of a lot of broadcast television.

Bloody enjoyable video to watch with some fantastic editing and a solid bike review. I'd be tempted to take something like that for a test ride, I'm also 6'3" and too tall for a lot of bikes, but the test ride roads here are usually very scripted and straight.....

So glad I've found your channel. Awesome gear and bike reviews that are in-depth and critical, a rare thing in the sea of gloating sales pitches that pass as "reviews" these days. Great production quality too. Now tell me that you ship across the border to NY and you have a new customer!

I get your point ryan. The XSR900 struggles to fit in. But so did I most of my life. Maybe that is why this bike is so perfect for me. It fools uninformed people with it's classy (if not vintage) look. But underneath you get a great naked sportsbike. It's the understatement here that is so appealing to me. And it really rides well (except for the really bumpy roads). Anyway, great video as alway! I love that you try to do something unique with your videos.

I was looking for a used bike, but bought a new DL-1000 because they don't depreciate much. But get last years model. Instead of $13k plus taxes in December, I paid $9300 with taxes in January. Go figure!

Cool review! LOVED the editing! Please make more reviews like this! The only thing I disagree with was (spoilers)... the conclusion. It's true, it really doesn't fit in to any discernible category. It really doesn't have a place, a genre, a niche, a definite purpose. Those are exactly the reasons why I'm drawn to it, I think. Same reason I love my 87 Super Magna (see gen 2, not 1 or 3). It's not a logical bike at all, it's just... cool? I guess, to me, the little oddities make it unique and gives it personality. And that's something the great and reliable Japanese bikes have always seemed to be missing. Anyways, I can't wait to see some more reviews if they are of this quality, REALLY great job :)

I agree, and doesn't the fact that it's so non-specific make it the true ultra modern UJM?
@christianmonteith8568
@christianmonteith8568 7 лет назад
I think it does, in a way. At least for some people. The XSR is such a weird bike, and I can't get it off my mind. I understand that the FZ-10 is a more practicle bike, from a naked sport POV, but I don't care at all. The XSR excited me so much more. Everything about it is so odd haha, love it. The review concludes that the bike doesn't make sense... By what standard? The XSR SCREAMS nonsense, as it's supposed to! Weee!

Agreed. I bought mine a few weeks ago, it now has 1200 miles on it, and every one with a huge smile. The bike is fun to ride, it looks amazing, what else would you want? It does not fit nearly anywhere, where is exactly why I like it. I would recommend to anyone but new riders. Young, old, getting back on the saddle after years off (like me)-its a good fit for all.

I really like this video where the review of the bike converges with basic marketing questions and even philosophy of life. In fact, when you think about it, while café racers certainly don't need the modernity that the XSR triple gives it, it seems to me that the target audience, probably hipster 40+ year olds, really want that connection between then and now. Then - the nostalgia of another time where youth and lack of responsibility were the major key; now - twisting the throttle, hearing the howl of the triple, but also having driving modes and abs. I agree that there is some confusion in this bike. But you know, I think there is confusion in this generation.
@TheBoulder11
@TheBoulder11 6 лет назад
I think people missed a target audience. I personally don't want a sports bike, i want something with a more upright riding position, but something with a more classic style to it. Sure it might be the inner hipster in me but that's ok. It's a taste thing and it's my preference. I personally love the style of this bike and that weighs heavily for me. If I'm gonna ride it, I want it to perform well first, but I also want to love the look. This bike hits both of those for me. Other naked sports bikes look TOO aggressive in my opinion. This is a bit more toned down with a retro style. I love it.

@georgenewman5860
@georgenewman5860 6 лет назад
TheBoulder11 Agreed, it seems like many people are anxious to pigeon hole motorcycles into accepted categories. I've heard people reviewing the XSR complain that it is not authentically retro. My take is this is a retro themed bike that offers all the modern performance and safety features in less modern and more classic styling. I certainly prefer the styling of the XSR to that of the FZ-09 (MT-09). As an FJ-09 (MT-09 Tracer) owner I would be curious to see what a retro touring version might look like...

In your rundown of it's potential competitors you're leaving out the obvious suspect, The Triumph Thruxton (R). It can also live up to the expectations that its exterior creates. It's a bit down on power compared to the Yamaha, but what it lacks in power it makes up for in torque. It also has riding modes and a proper suspension. And while it's a bit more expensive it's also designed to be a modern classic from the ground up, rather than a street bike made to look like one.
@Supernova12034
@Supernova12034 6 лет назад
theres more to power than just stat sheets, the parallel twins triumph makes are tame compared to this, which makes me shit my pants if im not careful
@redboatandrew
@redboatandrew 5 лет назад
@@adamsavage7551 The Triumphs look very good - much better than this Yamaha which is a failed attempt at retro. They also have plenty of torque, are comfortable, and easy to ride. If I was buying a bike just to impress a girlfriend that did not know anything about motorcycles, I'd get a Thruxton. And a lot of men buy them just for those reasons...

Thanks! The Basehawk is amazing - it's probably my favourite jacket to ride in at the moment. My only complaint is that it desperately needs exhaust vents on the back. As it is, the Basehawk gets a bit stuffy over 30C. ~RyanF9
