What I always do at the same time is remove the cam that spreads the shoes apart, clean the cam and surface of the hole in the brake shoe plate that it turns in, lightly grease the cam and the brake shoe plate hole, and put that back together. Reason being is that this area will eventually dry up and have unwanted friction if left long enough, and in severe cases the cam and the hole it passes through will wear into an oval shape. Takes just a few minutes to do this step. Scribe a mark from the cam to the cam lever before removing it so you can put the lever back on the cam splines in the same position. I also put a light dab of grease on the flat part of the cam where it contacts and spreads the shoes and also on the retaining pin at the other end of the shoes. I will also clean and grease the seal lip where the wheel spacer pops in, clean and apply a film of grease to the wheel axle, and the clean inner race of the wheel bearings where the axle slides through them. I do not spray brake cleaner into the hole in the bearings where the axle slides through as this may contaminate the bearings with grit, so I just use a clean rag and my finger. You are wanting to remove all traces of old grease and dirt before assembling the freshly cleaned and greased parts.
Hi! this may be a dumb question. since I dont have a garage I would like to avoid checking my brake pads before taking off the rear wheel. However, my bike is braking slowly (if at all with the rear brake). I can tighten the cable but not with my hands. Is that indicative of brakes pads being worn down?

Not a dumb question at all, I am not entirely sure how tight they can go but the wing nut seems to be designed to hand tighten so I wouldn’t recommend using tools to tighten the cable, it may stretch or break that cable which would might cause more issues but I would say yeah the pads are most likely worn, worth trying to replace them yourself or take it in to get done in my opinion.
@@jonathanheinz164 yo! So this is I think my third kenda trak master in a row. And maybe my second for the front but I believe it is 90% off-road and 10% highway use. But I have a new one that I plan on putting on soon actually hahah I personally love this tire, especially for my area, considering all my riding spots are relatively close to my house. But I highly recommend if you ride a lot of trails. I feel like this tire lasts a really long time even with a decent amount of highway miles as well.
