Another chill demo showcasing all the new electric pianos on the Yamaha YC61, YC73 and YC88. We'll play some improvisations on the Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos. We'll feature the brand new samples included with the firmware 1.1 released recently.
These are the same or similar sounds as the CP73 and CP88 so this might be helpful if you are considering those keyboards.
Check out my previous video for the acoustic pianos, CFX, Nashville, U2 etc.

Your channel is such a great addition to the technical reviews of others. With you we have a wonderful performer to take the keyboards to their intended other place...a musicians creative dreamland.

I'm waiting in excitement for my YC-73 to arrive tomorrow. I bought it specifically for the spot on Rhodes and Wurlitzer sounds. The Organ, Piano and DX will all just be icing on the cake.

Beautifully played as ever, Woody. Nice to see that somebody other than Nord has finally twigged that a Wurlitzer is often about fragile qualities, a plaintive 'clank' and not just an over souped-up distorted bark fest that many 'class leading' instruments represent it as. Not mentioning any names, especially not the Korg SV1 ;-)

I've watched your other demos on the YC61 and, man, I need to try out that keybed for action. These EPs really sound great. I appreciate lighter weight as I get older and can live with the 61 key form factor, although my preference would normally be to go for 73 or 88 and I'm accustomed to weighted action.

Hey Woody, Can you please do a video giving some advice on the best sort of keyboard action for playing electric pianos and funky organ? I'm from an acoustic piano background and some key actions feel very alien to me, but maybe they work well for different styles of playing? Nice playing BTW
@WoodyPianoShack
@WoodyPianoShack 3 года назад
thanks, I find the action on the YC61 and nord electro to be very good for both, just avoid weighted keyboards at all cost for organ, whera I find piano to be quite ok to play on a synth or organ keyboard.

For my personal taste I think I’d only ever use the 78’ Rhodes with an amp sim, and the Wurlitzer which sounds like it could used a bit of eq to make it more defined in a mix.

Hey Woody, I read in the manual that you can set the filter/EG knob in several configurations including controlling ADR all at once or Attack, Decay, or Release separately. Are you planning a video for the FM synth section?

Howdy mate! Fun playing and cheery music Woody. I enjoy how much fun you have playing. Especially on a wintry snowy day I see from your background. Every time I hear a Rhodes sounding keyboard, I think of Supertramp. Say Woody...do you have a great headphone set you could recommend to me? Usage would be for recording, mastering and overall general music listening.

@@WoodyPianoShack Oh awesome Woody thank you. I heard of these actually. In Canada, they are $240.00 before taxes. I looked at the different ohm and for recording/mastering they figure the 250-ohm is better. Whereas the 80-ohm is for home stereo listening as it provides more bass. The 250-ohm has greater crisp highs. Why why hwy can't they just combine things so as to now have to buy a crap ton of models for everything..lol. I also question about the non detachable cable which is bad for me as I walk around all day with headphones and tend to yank my poor cable out many times...lol. I've gone through 2 cables already.

Woody, should I Spring for the YC73 so I can have that EP style action, or does the 61 feel real good for those too? Rhodes are my favorite ever, but I want a YC for the organs too...
@WoodyPianoShack
@WoodyPianoShack 3 года назад
yc is an organ focused board, so for me the lighter keys of the 61 or nothing! they are great for playing piano, albeit a bit jumpy in the velocity response when I play. check out the cp if pianos are more your thing!
@retromacman620
@retromacman620 3 года назад
@@WoodyPianoShack thanks for the answer. I've been into synths and organ tones since I started playing music, it's only in the past few years that I got into piano and fell in love with the Rhodes, so I guess I want that middle ground. The CP seems just passable on organ and synth and I want all around if I can get it for that price

Wow :-) I was so impressed, that I bought the YC61. Maybe you have me a hint: If I play, my YC61 sounds like a toy, very little bass or middle. Do you change the velocity curve and depth? What do u change to become that wonderful sound that I hear in your video? Thank you very much, Tom

So I have been wanting to learn how to play piano because I'm just drawn to that Rhodes/Wurlitzer sound. Can you tell me what is the cheapest keyboard I can start out on that has that sound?
@WoodyPianoShack
@WoodyPianoShack 2 года назад
all entry level digital pianos and synths have versions of the rhodes sound, perhaps not as authentic as these, but fine for learning how to play! or get controller keyboard and a kontakt sample library lie scarbee.

While the new Fender Rhodes RD8 came out, with a starting price around 10K I'm looking for this sound in a E-piano. So far I'm still in love with look and sound of the Crumar Seven, have you ever tried that beauty? Would be amazing to see you vibe'n that one 😎
@WoodyPianoShack

both rhodes and crumar offered me the chance to play and review their new e-pianos but not able to do it at the moment, sadly. not come across the crumars at all.

@@WoodyPianoShack The new Rhodes RD8 just came out, I'm wondering is there such a small time frame then to try it out? I think it would make sense to see a YT-influencer like you, with it's dedicated keyboards/synths channel, trying it out those brands. Atm I am watching you're keyboard videos, and the whole time I think, "give this guy a Crumar" I could be wrong, but I think it would be a keeper for you.. The Rhodes is wayyy to expensive for me, so I will go for the Crumar, will make a video for sure once I got it :)

Q: Are the electric pianos on the YC-series SCM (modelled) or AWM (sampled)? The YC manual doesn't say, but I was wondering whether you could hear any sample-switching across pre-determined velocity thresholds, as is usually the case with sampled pianos?

purely sampled, i'm very picky about velocity switches, but there is nothing here to bother me. very nicely done!

Overall i like the sounds of the E.P.s.. One disconcerting negative, one video on RU-vid shows there’s a cluster of notes on two of the Rhodes patches that are distinctly different then the rest of the oterhwise pretty consistent sound. I’m for one Rhodes patch where the whole range is varied in setup, but not otherwise. The Wurlitzer I’m VERY satisfied with.

oh gosh, thanks if there is a compliment in there. i play a broad range of styles, at a passable level. i'm no expert at any particular style. i suggest you find a style you love, blues, soul, rock, funk or whatever and just listen to loads of it and try and play it yourself. don't expect quick results, it takes years... :) best wishes.

@@WoodyPianoShack it is an indirect compliment, absolutely! Your playing style appeals greatly to my taste and it is something I dream of achieving. I’m 34, I play the guitar but I just started learning how to play the piano. It is a bit intimidating to learn a new instrument at my age.
