Relaxed demo of the acoustic pianos on the Yamaha YC61, YC73 and YC88. We'll play the CFX, C7, S700, Nashville Grand, U1 Upright and more. We'll Include of course the new pianos released last week in firmware 1.1 so you can hear them for yourselves. As a bonus we'll play some tunes on the CP80 electric pianos and layer in some synth sounds.
Recorded in one take, bum notes sound right if you play them twice, or maybe they were right notes but in wrong order, as the saying goes :)
Same sounds as the CP73 and CP88, if I'm not mistaken.
Electric pianos, Rhodes and Wurlis coming soon!

Your lovely environs remind me a lot of a place I lived in Vermont years ago. I used to listen to a lot of beautiful piano music like what you’re playing. Really takes me back to happy times. Thanks!

Hey woody..the reason your demos are so good is you thoroughly enjoy what you are doing and it comes out in the music.it's not technical wizardry playing like the Yamaha/Roland/kurzweil/korg pro demo performers and for me , so much the better cos we play alike and enjoy what we like..Great stuff keep up the good work. I still have my Roland FA08 which I bought after your honest review!!

glad to hear that, yes it can be helpful to hear how an instrument sounds in the hands of an "average joe" player, those other wizards can make the worst keyboard sound amazing... :D

What a fabulous video demonstration of the piano sounds in the Yamaha YC61. You play extremely well, expressively and by keeping to the same theme, it was an excellent comparison of each piano. So often just flicking through presets, the pianos can sound very similar with only subtle differences. You managed to bring out the characteristics and nuances of each tone, and I loved the natural lighting in the window and B-roll of snowy nature. Nice one Woody, keep up the great work.

Considering this is a stage keyboard concentrating on organ sounds, this is quite an impressive collection of acoustic pianos (and electric pianos of course). Only really missing the Bosendorfer from the CP line. For me the YC73 is probably the best all round compromise for the gigging musician from Yamaha's line of stage keyboards.

Thanks for the video man! I wanted to go for the 73 version but can't justify the huge price difference. How do you find the YC 61's keyboard? Does it have any substantial resistance to bring it closer to a weighted keyboard or it's a typical "airy" waterfall keyboard?
@WoodyPianoShack
@WoodyPianoShack 3 года назад
it is quite stiff to push down, it's not like a lightweight synth action, i would describe as semi-weighted, nice compromise for playing organ and piano, works nice, although i would like more velocity curves in the settings.

I’m really loving my YC61. Despite the keys being non weighted I was very surprised at how easy it is to play really expressively on this keyboard! The acoustic piano sounds are good and very useable but I would love to have proper sympathetic string resonance instead of the damper resonance effect. This would really add a more life to the piano sounds and possibly overtake Nord. I would also love adjustable pedal and hammer noise.

Hi Richard, it seems that after a few months of usage, the keybed of the YC61 may become clanky, noise and loose on quite a few cases. Has it happened to yours as well?

My keybed became very clanky as well to the point that I had to sell it 🙈 it’s a shame because the sound and the rest of the instrument are gorgeous. V 1.2 improved on the organ sounds but still… I hope Yamaha makes a revision future YC61 keybeds.

The Live CF3 sound was in many digital pianos from Yamaha including the motif classic 2:52 but the U1 makes me think of low-fi pianos and 60s/70s pop 3:48

Hey Woody, thanks for playing these new piano voicings; I anticipate picking up my YC61 later today, and your videos are one of the ways that helped put my decision over the top to get one. I'm not as concerned as some are regarding the Leslie sims for the organ bits, but I also wonder if Yamaha may work this out in future updates. Anyway, it's the whole package that intrigues me.
@WoodyPianoShack
@WoodyPianoShack 3 года назад
lucky you! mine's just a loaner! love it to bits though, don't worry about the leslie sim, there are so many combinations of organ models and leslie you'll find something, i continue to find amazing combos, really liking the distortion of the rotary 2 right now!

I am having a hard time deciding between the YC61 and YC73. Piano demos like this make me want to get the 73 and use a Roland A-800 Pro as a midi controller for the organ. But, I also like the portability of the YC61 and waterfall keyboard. I could midi the 61 to the Fantom 7 for the pianos. Thoughts, anyone?
@nadia-ow4op
@nadia-ow4op 3 года назад
The YC61 and its waterfall keyboard is made for organ playing. You better hook up a fully weighted keyboard for serious piano playing.
@Roboprogs
@Roboprogs 3 года назад
Well, if I ever get good enough to justify the price of one of These YCs, I’m going to use my Casio 88 key as a controller, so I’ll have both weighted key and synth/organ action keys. I like the feel of the Casio, even if its sounds are basic, and I can use the USB A port on the Yamaha to connect controllers that are USB MIDI only.
@WoodyPianoShack
@WoodyPianoShack 3 года назад
i personally favour the 61 package for it's compactness and organ style waterfall keys. wouldn't ever want to play organ on a weighted piano keys. but your idea of a external midi keyboard for the organ sounds is interesting indeed and worth excploring.
@danielmudd4263
@danielmudd4263 3 года назад
I opted for the YC61. I also own a p125 I use for the weighted action. This way I have the option of bringing both to a gig. But I still have the portability of the YC61 if I want to just take that. Also the organ style action is very nice, hard to find a midi controller with as nice of organ action. You can also buy a YC61 with an midi 88 weighted board for the same price as the YC73

Playing the same song all along is an excellent mean to feel the differences between the pianos CFX : poor harmonics and sympathetic resonnance in the upper and middle range but beautiful bass sound, globally a feeling of a soulless piano clean but a lack of soul S700 : more clarity but to bright and less deep : for rock and pop music C7 : a little bit dark but beautiful in the middle range CF3 NAshille : beautiful real feeling and soulful something between grand and upright, CF3 live : short, and without soul... U1 : beautiful sound we feel this littlel famous piano we all know CP80 : may be you should play with more dynamics, its a rock and pop sound Anyway great job to help us : thanks !
@WoodyPianoShack

thanks for the breakdown! a bit tricky to play this board dynamically, even on hard velocity setting, it's all to easy to accidentally trigger the high velocities and get a note jumping out. hard to play soft, my technique perhaps lacking, but need some more velocity curves I think.
