Yamaha YDX-MORO PRO Review | 2021 eMTB Shootout

Yamaha’s YDX-MORO PRO is an eBike that certainly brings a lot of unique and interesting things to the table. From the twin tube frame design to their own PW-X2 motor and control unit, awesome Quad Sensor technology and a sub-$5,500 price tag. Yamaha stands by their geometry convictions and while we applaud them for thinking outside the box, we’re sure some will write the bike off because of it. We felt that the geometry wasn’t a deal breaker, but that it also could have felt better as the low stack height and seat tube put us in a slightly stretched out position. We also think a larger battery would be great to have for riders wanting to ride in higher power modes or get out for big rides. Despite some critiques, the YDX is a fun and capable bike all around. It will suit many riders just fine and we liked how playful it was and how it handled landing into the chunky Utah rock. We look forward to seeing where Yamaha goes with their eMTB line in the future as they’re onto some cool stuff with this PW-X2 system.
Climbing: The climbing position on the YDX-MORO was awkward at first and seemed long due to the relaxed seat tube angle and low stack height. We talked with Yamaha at length about their geometry and found they had tested almost a dozen prototype frames with many different geometry and suspension platforms. The decision was made to go with a slacker seat tube angle to give the bike the most rear wheel traction possible and allow riders to climb up steep pitches without the rear tire spinning out. With a wheelbase of 1,253mm the front wheel stayed planted on steep climbs without sacrificing agility navigating tight switch backs, which could be in part due to the somewhat low-feeling front end. The smooth power delivery in MTB mode kept wheel spin at a minimum and allowed you to get the power to the ground. A common issue we have on bikes, especially eMTB’s is dropper length, to achieve a proper saddle height with the 150mm dropper we had the post quite a way out of the seat tube. With the seat tube being nearly completely straight having a 180mm dropper would be appreciated.
Descending:
When it comes to descending the YDX-MORO PRO had a bit of a mixed response. After getting on the fresh bike we had a much better experience and thought the suspension performed way more how we hoped it would. When it comes to handling, the 27.5” wheels are snappy through tight corners and make it a fun bike overall. We liked how the YDX-MORO blended playfulness and stability, although the 66.3-degree head tube angle won’t be ideal for riders who live on super steep downhill tracks and regularly achieve mach-speeds, unless of course you’re name is Brian Lopes.
We had a bit of an issue with feeling off-balanced on the bike in certain instances. We’re not sure if it is the 666mm top tube length in conjunction with the 70.3-degree seat tube angle but when in an attack position the front end seems long and low. This was confirmed by a number of riders during our eMTB Shootout in St. George, Utah. While I do not think this really impacts the bikes performance, it does give the rider a bit of an unsure feeling through long flat corners until you learn how it likes to be ridden. The YDX-MORO really likes you to ride in a forward position, once accustomed to that riding position, confidence in longer flat corners comes back.

Hei Loamers, take into account that the conditions you are testing are really unique. Plus size tires do definitely not work in those conditions but that does not mean that the fact that the bike is built to accommodate plus size tires is a negative. It is actually a massive strength of the bikes taking into account the wider global riding terrain and winter riding on snow! The plus size design usually also means that the rims are wide enough even on an entry to the market bike like Yamaha. I do not care what tires the bike comes with but I would never buy a bike that would not be designed to fit a plus size tyre in the back. This due to the use of different type and size of tires around the year, we don't all ride Utah rocks all year around 😀 P.S. You are complaining of a low handlebar height, yet you are riding the bike at its lowest handlebar setting 😀
@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf 3 года назад
Hey Markus, Thanks for the feedback. We also do not like the Plus size tires on our normal terrain up in the PNW. We find the large tires are hard to place between roots in tight eroded rock gardens, and where you have to "thread the needle" which we often do on our trails. We do not deny that Plus tires can have benefit for some, but we do not think that the occasional benefits we would experience are worth the many negatives we experience. We experimented with the bike in a variety of bar positions throughout the week, and during the photos it happened to be at the lowest. We also rode the bike with all those mm under the stem too. Thanks for watching

@@TheLoamWolf yep the best compromise are perhaps bikes that spec their rear end to fit a plus size but the bike is otherwise built to be a plus size bike such as Canyon Spectral. Did you try to ride the Yamaha with 29 wheels front and back, as this is a plus size provision that the bike allows?

As a former Yamaha representative they are very aggressively seeking that number one spot, meaning excellence customer service, they want happy customers witch is good for all of us, much of that falls back to the dealers, but if your dealer willing to go a little extra for you so will Yamaha, so that make them number one in my book.

2 months and 200 miles in on my Moro Pro. Only problem I've had was with the dropper post. Love the bike, motor is powerful and I have yet to out ride my battery. I ride my usual 10-11 miles, do 1500 ft or more climbing and only use about 35% battery. For the price, this thing is a great bike.

really appreciate the reviews of less common brands. btw you should specify the casing spec on the control tires, super gravity is way different from flimsy-what's-it-called-trail-spec & in my humble experience that alone can make a bike much more capable at aggressive descents.

@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf 3 года назад
Suspect how? In that our entire team had nearly the same feedback on this bike without comparing notes until the end? What bikes have you ridden besides the three you mentioned as a reference for comparison? All we can do when we test bikes, in as open and unbiased of a way as humanly possible, is to take our perceived feedback based on how we ride and what we like bikes to do and feel like on the trail, then translate that into as broad of an application as possible, based on years of riding 100's of bikes, riding with riders from World Cup pros to beginners on their first bikes and put it all into perspective the best we can. This is a big reason why we talk about our perspective of a bike and who/where we think they would be best suited for. Congrats on your new bikes and we hope you enjoy. Thanks for watching!
@msawyer110
@msawyer110 3 года назад
Ya I agree. You can see their displeasure as a motorsports company has entered the ring. Funny they didn't test the regular moro at 4,500. That would have made half the bikes on the list seem overpriced and that hurts the narrative that you have to spend 8 grand on an emtb to get anything of quality.

Yamaha needs to lose the the larger LCD display and go to their smaller LCD display that is offered on the Haibike & Raymond eMTBs. They also need to bring 630Wh battery to USA just to keep up with all the other brand battery offerings.

But I'm getting 11 miles and 2000 ft climb and bring back 35% home so it isn't too bad. Did 17 miles and 3500 ft and it got to 6% on my biggest ride. I don't feel that's too bad.
