Yamaha YZF-R3 Dyno Test With Yoshimura R77 Race Exhaust

Ari's got a new project! This Yamaha YZF-R3 is being transformed into a racebike, and one of the first steps in the development process is exhaust testing. In this vid, Ari weighs, installs, and then dyno tests Yoshimura's R77 exhaust, providing full results on power and torque gains, weight savings, sound, and the installation process.
--
It's not often that you get honest, empirical data about aftermarket exhausts. Well, if you're in the market for a pipe for your Yamaha YZF-R3, you're in luck, because Ari Henning has put Yoshimura's new R77 race exhaust through the ringer. Watch the video to learn about what this pipe has to offer in terms of weight savings, power gains, and sound. Ari even tests the pipe with the quiet insert installed. You'll be surprised by the results!

Well done Ari! Some bikes require an insert to make more power. For Yoshimura the R3 is one of those bikes. Kudos for showing quieter bikes can be made more powerful. Oh and sorry about the foam. We want to protect the systems the best we can :) we are working to not use it in the future.

Hello Yoshimura, Bit of feedback for you, for my GSX 1400 i had fitted Yoshimura stage 1 cams and 4 into 1 titanium machine bend pipes. Brilliant got 20% increase in horsepower and a 2 stroke like power band at 5400rpm. The downside is the pipes scrape like buggery at the 4 into 1 collector. I've had a mini bash plate made up and the gouges cover a area of 25mm by 80mm.

Nice work Ari. But i cant help but notice that the factory model R3 in India has 43.5 bhp. Big fan of your videos, really helpful. Also I'm hoping you'll make a detailed video on the track mods you are doing on the R3 just like that video of your RC390. And a comparison too with performance figures and lap times and on board videos. Thanks in advance 😀😬

I have been following Ari's build. Pipe 38.4hp, Pipe & PC5 38.79hp, Pipe & Re-flash 39.35hp. So a pipe & re-flash about a $1K to make 6 more hp. About 40hp & 20.5tq. That is rear wheel power. My 1978 KZ750 twin was about 45hp at rear wheel. Hmmm.... This bike is faster than it appears to be.

I do not know how the Power Commander mapping works, but here in Brazil, in the championship that exists of motorcycles YZF R3, motorcycles have about 42hp in the wheel (about 48hp in the engine), only with preparation that includes race exhaust, air filter and iridium spark plugs and of course, the electronic preparation. And one of the preparers that I know uses the original ECU of the bike to reach that power, some others uses Rapid Bike or Bazzaz..

I found 2 Yoshimura exhausts at the markets, with rust all over the thin metals that are held on by the little round rivets ( I think they're called ). I was going to buy them but seeing rust also inside the cans, I let it pass. I was thinking if its stainless steel, it shouldn't rust at all.

Thank you for emphasizing the point that you need to adjust the tune after the exhaust change. It bugs me so much when people slap on parts and think that's all there is to it. If you change the type of air filter, you need a new tune (or carb re-jetting for carbureted bikes) if you change the exhaust you need a fuel adjustment... You don't want to end up running lean because you cut corners and half-assed the job. BTW, that exhaust sounds better (on camera at least) with the baffle in. Great job with the video!
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP 6 лет назад
Ari, does that mean you'll race with the baffle in place? It cant weigh too much at all and if it can repeatedly make an ounce more power, it should be worth running. What are your thoughts?

When you said you were going to re- dyno the bike after installing the baffle I knew there would be a twist ! pretty awesome to learn that .I never would have figured more power with the baffle in. I have a two brothers exhaust on my V-Strom 1000 wonder if the p1x power tip would kill my d-cell pop and give me any more power??? It's a little on the loud side anyway it sounds like a good reason to try it thanks for the tip!

Good evening to all, i saw that Ari sad something about "if you run a full exhaust system it is not very good without a REMAP". Can someone explane why exactly you need a remap? Is it bad for the Engine somehow ? Or it's just not benefiting at all from the full exhaust system. Thank you very much and have a good night :)
@kornboy22

Why did you not tune the power commander on the dyno instead of using a fixed map? Fixed map is pretty good but tuning for an individual bike is better.

Great video, Ari! It's all a matter of averages of course, and a 10%+ power gain is pretty awesome for not much time invested! Those spring pullers do look pretty sweet. I learned a trick when I was installing a used center stand on my '94 Yamaha, a couple years ago. If you DON'T have a spring puller, bend the spring in half as much as you can and stick a couple pennies into the gaps. Then bend it the other way, and repeat. That adds length and allows you to simply slip the spring in place. Then extend it and............poof, full refund. :-]

On most bikes it will reduce it since you aren't shooting oxygen into the exhaust, but youll still probably get some on decel. My 600 sure does and it has no cat or air injection. Its just from being tuned a lil rich on top, pops when you let off due to the excess unburnt fuel in the exhaust.

My question is what is the dollar amount per horsepower value. I'd like to see an Roi on that. I'm guessing that the yosh system had to be running somewhere between $500 and 1k? I don't know what a Power Commander goes for these days I'm out of the loop... but it seems to me that's quite a costly investment for 3.6 horsepower gain and basically no torque increase. Which means you're not getting any more power off the corners but just straightaway speed. I'm wondering if there would be a much cheaper way to gain one or two horsepower for less than half the cost of your investment. Is there a chip available to change the engine mapping without installing a power commander? Will there be a cheaper alternative to the Yosh system maybe a little heavier but still lighter than stock something that flowed a little better.
@chrisredfield3240

I've heard about the sound issue before, loud exhaust = power loss through sound waves.
@treycarter440
@treycarter440 6 лет назад
Its not the sound waves that cause it. Its often due to back pressure and length. There is always some optimal configuration to make the most power at a certain RPM on any given motor setup. You play around with either the back pressure or the length, you shift the power around. Sometimes outside of where the motor does its best which is bad.
