I taste the Yamazaki 12 and Hakushu 12 Single Malts head to head from the House of Suntory to see which one of these readily available Japanese Single Malts is worth the big bucks!

Interesting I think the Hakushu is one of the best peated I've ever had. I got really nice bright citrus notes, with a bit of caramel and vanilla, with that nice gentle peat note and slight tobacco note on the end it was super super smooth absolutely amazing. Only got to try a glass of it and maybe one day I can get a bottle. The Yamazaki is not bad it's like a typical 12 Year scotch but the Mizunara gives it a bit of an apple and citrus notes that makes it slightly different from a typical 12 Year scotch but a ton of that like wet cereal note and grains on the palate and nose typical of most scotch that's ex bourbon it's definitely slightly better than most of those but is considerably more expensive still a good easy drinker though

Thank you for your detailed comment! I think you gave incredible tasting notes and yes they both are good whiskies no doubt about it. I had to take the price in to consideration because there are so many alternatives out there that I don't think I can justify paying that much money for these two drams just because they're Japanese. Cheers! 🥃

Great review! I have a bottle of each of these and I prefer the Hakushu. The Yamasaki is great, but often hits me as overly sweet. Hakushu reminds me of a Kilkerran 16 with the volume turned down.

Thank you, glad you liked it. I enjoyed both of them but neither of them blew me away, Interesting comparison with Kilkerran. That is also a distillery which I never truly connected with. Cheers!

I’m going to be really honest… I just purchased 2 bottles of The Yamasaki 12 as it was suddenly available at my local shop… not a big fan… cost $139 a bottle, and I don’t think it’s worth it. Maybe I’m a novice but taste is taste and this bottle does not drive me to select it when I’m choosing in my bar.
@thewhiskyenthusiast

You're absolutely right! It's the hype behind Japanese whiskies that drives the prices up. It's a decent dram but it's nowhere near the price people ask for it. Low stock, less aged stated single malts (or blends) from Japan just rocketed the prices. I would get it to have a Japanese whisky on my shelf if it was around 50 but no definitely not at the current prices. Cheers!

@@thewhiskyenthusiast yeah… as they say “don’t meet your heros” this is one that was disappointing. I will keep one bottle on my shelf as a novelty but will be returning the second and exchanging for one of my all time favorites - highland park 18 to enjoy.

Having The Yamasaki 12 while watching this and gotta say it’s my fave! I bought a bottle of Hakushu for about $80 several years ago and gave it away. When I can’t find Hibiki, tho I have a waiting bottle on my shelf, Redbreast 12 is a great sub! Thanks for the video! Kampai 🤙🏼🤙🏼🥃

Both are good whiskies no doubt but I just can't justify the price point in my market. Glad you enjoyed your whisky whilst watching the review 😃 I like the Hibiki, again very expensive for what it is but good whisky none the less. I never connected with the Redbreast 12 though I just don't enjoy it but I know I'm in the minority here. Thanks for dropping by and commenting 🥃

The boom in Japanese whisky is really a shame. These used to be good quality products that were priced appropriately. The Yamazaki 12 is around $140-150 in my area. If I made the decision to spend that much money on a whisky I sure as hell am not spending it on either of these inflated bottles.
@thewhiskyenthusiast
@thewhiskyenthusiast Год назад
I would sign my name under this statement! You're absolutely right! I wouldn't spend that money on these two. There are plenty of great whiskies out there and more coming with new innovative distilleries. Thank you for your comment, cheers 🥃

I bought a bottle of Yamazaki 12 in Japan yesterday for about $225 AUD, really expensive but to now buy this in Australia it actually costs $450 AUD, we went to a whisky bar to try it and I was pretty impressed with the flavour. I will savour it tho

@@jgarner447 Wow that's a massive price difference but I do hear that the Australian market is quite expensive when it comes to whisky.

Yeesh. It's good stuff that's for sure. I've definitely been at the store in an ' I don't give a f***' attitude and spent a lot of my hard-earned cash on whisky. I did that not too long ago with the Hibiki Blossom Harmony bottle. Haven't tried yet, but it's supposed to be nice 🙂.

Not worth anymore for that price. I had 2 bottles for 70€ few years ago, along with Springbank 12CS, still can't get over it how pricey they got. I just have an "agenda" where I won't spend more then 70-80€ per bottle.
@thewhiskyenthusiast
@thewhiskyenthusiast Год назад
I dig that agenda! It has gone ridiculous. Though if you actually go to Campbeltown and buy from the distillery the prices are still normal. It's the second hand market that has gone crazy!

Japanese Whiskies are super hyped and clearly not worth it. I am totally disappointed with the Yamazaki 12, and not willing to pay $200. I like Hakushu better, but not worth the $250 price tag. Japanese whiskies are sitting on the shelves and collecting dust because of the price gauging by the importers and the sellers in my area. You can just walk in and buy both of them.
@thewhiskyenthusiast
@thewhiskyenthusiast Год назад
It is the same situation here in my market. They were overpriced 2 years ago and they still are, so some of the shops I know still keep the same bottles like you said collecting dust. Us the drinkers/buyers know better now to not spend our hard earned cash to whiskies that just don't deserve it. There are so many new distilleries coming up with great stuff presented in a craft way, we'll just migrate towards them 😃 Cheers 🥃
