Great video guys! Hakushu is my favorite of the bunch. The pear and apple notes with threads of delicate smoke are special. Cheers guys!

It's July 2024 and at Total Wine here in Minnesota. The Yamazaki and Hakushu are $200 a bottle, and the Hibiki is $100. I was able to grab a bottle of Yamazki 12 for $180 and Hibiki for $75, but that was last year prices.

Harmony is one of my favorites. It's gone up in price since I first bought it, from $57, now to $75. If I can find it!

All that I can fin locally is Yamazaki and Hibiki. Yamazaki 12 is a staple on my bar. I have enough bottle to make it through the shortage. Would love to see a Drinkthrough for Old Forester. Most of their whiskeys are available across the country and there is enough variety to make it a good show.

Yamazaki is very good and extremely balanced. But Hakushu is better with tropical fruit, pine forest, light smoke, and apples.

Another great drinkthrough. My tastes usually lean toward the balanced Hibiki line, though I did try and enjoyed the Hakushu 12.

I have this full lineup. I picked up two bottles of Chita back in summer while traveling. I hated it at first but it opens up a lot and gets much better. Still very weird but the grain is very dominant. I don’t recommend unless you’re able to get it for a rational price.

Yamazaki is worth every penny of the $120 or so per bottle in my area, but man that’s a hard find. Hibiki is becoming more available and it’s fantastic too! Just scored a bottle of Hakushu, can’t wait to unscrew (not pop) that top

Thanks for this one. Last year in early October my wife was working in Japan. While she was there I was perfecting my Whisky Want List. Sadly, that tragic typhoon forced her to blast out of Tokyo a day early, the one time she had for shopping. You guys got to do a tasting for me.

Toki is the only one I can afford 😅. I only recently tried whisky and Toki is my first Japanese whisky and first whisky in general. As a lightweight I do enjoy sipping it straight. Would love to try Hibiki but it's $170 CAD right now so no that'd be wasted on me (Toki is $70 CAD).

Chita is a grain-only distillery with massive continuous distillation. That is the only one of the whiskies you have here that is widely available here in Japan. Definitely aimed for highball consumption. Amazing how most of those are easier to find in the US than Japan. Hakushu 12 is not sold here anymore. Toki never was. Yamazaki 12 will cost $175 on the secondary market--impossible to find at MSRP.

I keep kicking myself for not buying Hibiki Harmony years ago...silly how much it costs now and how hard it is to even find sometimes (Chicago area) and sad the age statements are gone. I will find a bottle though, and I WILL watch Lost in Translation while sipping it.

Thanks for the drink through! Never tried a Japanese Whiskey, looking forward to trying some in the near future. The Chita notes remind me of the brine notes some find in Jefferson’s Ocean cask strength. That’s probably way off but I had to say it, first thing I thought of. Cheers!🥃👍🇺🇸

Agree with Dutch with pretty much everything here. Hakushu is my favorite although I still also love the Yamazaki. Hibiki is generally my first pour of the night, but it doesn’t hold up once you start pouring the others. Guys should have gone Hibiki second. Toki... Bought it, have been trying to pawn it off on people ever since. Just don’t like it.

Stick some coke in your Toki and it makes sense much like the Haig Clubman ( which even tells you to mix it on the bottle )

Guys, Yamazaki 12 or Glenlivet 18? I have Nikka 12, Nikka Pure Malt and Hibiki…can go either way but seems like Glen 18 is better value. Thanks!

If you can find the older 43% bottling of the Glenlivet 18 - that's probably the winner - but both the Glen 18 and Yama 12 are solid pours.

You bourbon guys make me smile with your Scotch confusion, Yamazaki is more like a Speyside (sweet smooth and sherried) Hakushu is more in the Islay style with smoke and peat. Glenmorangie has no smoke at all Dutch ! It is the most Speyside of Scotches very smooth and sweet. Toki is straight up a mixing whisky young harsh and not for sipping (like Haig Clubman the David Beckham marketed rough stuff). Suntory have tried for decades to ape the Scotch styles and "outscotch" them. You are lucky to still get the 12s there we only get the NAS stuff now and having compared the Yamazaki 12 is levels above the Distillers Reserve we get now. Chita is grain whisky which was traditionally used to balance malts in blending, Not sure why anyone would drink it neat it is rough ! Hibiki is my favourite as I always get all 3 distillery flavours on the palate, it is rdiculously overpriced though and again the Hibiki 12 was superior to the NAS Harmony
@jorgotto3662
@jorgotto3662 3 года назад
Confusion? Not sure what they said that was technically wrong. Glenmorangie was much more peated in the distant past, and continues to have light peat today. The phenols are low for sure but it's there. Agree with you that Toki is a waste of money IMO considering you're getting nothing other than the Suntory name. Plenty of other scotch or scotch adjacent brands do a better mixing job. As for using terms like Speyside to describe "sweet" and "non-peat" is falling out of favor considering, Cragganmore, BenRiach, etc but I get what you're trying to say.
@Thetache
@Thetache 3 года назад
@@jorgotto3662 To put Glenmorangie in comparison with Hakushu will confuse the uninitiated it is much more akin to Yamazaki, and to say something used to be different is a pointless point, Glenmorangie NOW is a sweet whisky not a smoky whisky and would sit perfectly in the Speyside style lineup.
@steveno7058
@steveno7058 3 года назад
Hakushu is NOTHING like heavily peated Islay Scotch. Not even close. It’s more like a peated Speyside or Highland. Islay peat has a distinct medicinal and marine profile. Nothing like Hakushu.

The Chita is a bit grainy, but I enjoy it on occasion as a sipper. It reminds me a bit of Redbreast (albeit less refined).

The little guy is annoying. Picking apart a $30 bottle vs a $200 bottle is asinine and pretentious. Not pleased by anything but the most expensive bottles. The guy in the middle's the best. He''s always happy to be there drinking whisky on some random afternoon. Very appreciative and always smiling.
