watching you persist gave me a sense of happiness. I rarelly have things go my way and feel dumb but stubborn to keep trying. often its just some thing really small that is the difference between yes and no . Keep being the winner everyone likes a winner .
wow ed, just wow. I am man enough to say how jealous I am of the work you do, professional and an absolute treat. bang up job old top! hope those links helped out a bit.
smashing job:-), just a little bias spring for the guv arm and it will be spot on. You do a smashing job mate and they allways look fresh and smart with the new paintwork.
Forgot that diesels make a "knock" like that.. Was gonna say, It sounds pretty unhealthy. Nice vid. I've followed you since you first got it and I'm impressed and happy to see it running. Great job mate.
That sounds very sweet, will be interesting to hear it run with a muffler on it. This engine has come a hell of a way since you got it, it almost doesn't look like the same engine!
Yanmar sounds great and I have to say also you do one hell of a good job painting things up also! I try it and it peels lol. Diesel is warm, time for pizza!
hi, thank you for posting these, my life now depends on one of these engines... you mentioned, in the teardown video, that you were not getting any oil pressure, and thought the problem would be a worn pump bearing. have watched all your yse12, but did not see any update on the problem, which i seem to have also - no pressure at all, as far as i can tell. have the service manual, am planning to take the cover off, but am very amateur mech - would you happen to have any advice on this?
@BOBKB3NZX thanks man!, every bit of input is appreciated! I'm not happy with the amount of piston slap the engine exhibits, but it is still worn and old.
These engines run better when the fuel source is gravity fed. So the injection pump and lift pump dont have to pull the fuel they can push it. Those sparks were a sign of runing a bit lean. When my air cooled diesel is making sparks and missing its still needs more air bled out of the line
@Aussie50 Oh agreed, it seems that engines in this style like my oppy twin wear the pistons like that. always look forward to your vids, you have saved my hide a few times with them ideas
@TheFred1952 I honestly did not expect it to come up this good!, but a generator re-builder I know assured me that he's seen worse and they still ran!. so I tried it and it paid off!
I mesured a lot when I had it apart, but it does not seem to be obvious. the 3cyl I have sounds horrid at low idle but apparently sound like that from the factory
Mate, you are amazing in what you do. You get heaps of engines and you definitely know how to make them work! At your age this is just absolutely amazing. Really good mechanic right here, folks! Where in aus are you located Ed?
@myryonspoof if its running and you can hear a surging or hissing sound inside the lines, its probably suffered a leak and has no gas. unless its a very expensive unit, I would dump it and get a new one.
@Aussie50 Thanks mate... mmmmmm.... being an inboard marine motor, I wonder if it was one of twin set arrangement, and being so they had to run the screws (left & right props) in balance (CW + CCW)...?
@More350Power lol yer painting this sort of thing is all in the prep work, no oils or flaking paint, and making sure any existing paint will not craze when you spray over it!
@Aussie50 I got a mower engine at the moment, puttin a turbo on (RHB31) and electronic fuel injection. I was thinkin of a bigger motor to work on coz my passion is engines and bigger engines I can work on and get more uses for them. You able to meet us half way somewhere and take a bigger one on a trailer?
Nice job mate I think it started when it saw your dad had pizza ha runs like a champ I like the sound of it. Think it could still be fine in a boat or it needs much more work ?
Aussie! can you help me? my dad owns a small refrigerator that recently stopped working. he asked me if i could take a look at it. i then pulled the power and reconeccted it. the compressor began running, and it sounded like coolant was circulating. however, there was no cooling effect. so I let it run over night, and there was still no cooling effect. the compressor was also unusually hot.
Just got a yanmar engine it's much smaller than yours it's the l40 model they seem to be very solid engines but you do hear a lot of diesel nock when it is running at a low idle but then I guess these are designed to run at 3000- 3600 rpm constantly, also do the smaller ones have a oil pump (yanmar l40 ) or are they splash lubed
I am not sure if the L40 is splash lubed or pressure fed. maybe see if you can download a shop manual for it! as for the knock, thats pretty normal, all yanmars I have seen are noisy buggers!
yeh its complete, carbie is a bit unhappy because it has sat so long and fuel has gone bad. it will clean and tune up okay tho. its set up on a stand as a running display. but I will dismantle it so I can keep my engine stand :D
Nice little Yanmar, Mate. However, sounds like some diesel knock, if so, is there any remedy for that issue? What is kW rating of this little gem? Thanks.
I think they are about 15kw? 12Hp is what the plate says. A full rebuild will get rid of a lot of the knock but the yanmar dealer wants a load of money for all the parts, not to mention I have to get the block re-sleeved :(, not somthing I can justify since I do not have a proper use for it.
"Diesel Knock" is quite typical for all of the YS series engines. Because they are raw water cooled, the thermostat opening temperature is quite low (52C-125F) in order to keep salt water from crystallizing in the cooling passages so getting up to an efficient operating temperature never really happens. We have found that only on longer engine runs does the fuel or diesel knock fully subside. After a full rebuild with new rings, cylinder, piston and newly lapped valves we had diesel knock. Perhaps playing with the injection timing a bit might improve things but the method of timing (look at the marks on the flywheel and "listen for the injection noise") is hardly spot on. These engines will run and run and run... if they are properly maintained. We love our YSB8.
Thanks for that info. I'm thinking of buying a 1978 boat with a YSB8. I'm not very mechanical so I've been going to RU-vid school the last week looking for anything about diesel, and YSB8 in particular.
@daewooparts the ones we get here are made in CA, and are mutilated 7.62mm AK rifles, they are fun to shoot but at $800 a unit, too expensive for such a heavily mutilated AK. some years ago I did enquirer about making a straight-pull bolt action BREN gun, but since it looked like a machine gun, it was not approved. but I can still own deact Bren with a permit, go figure?
No worries! I'm 15 and I'm located in Metung which is near Bairnsdale in east gippsland. Can't seem to find any engines and it would be a pleasure to have all the engines you do!!!! Any chance you can ship one down for a small cost or find me one here? Thanks mate :)
@daewooparts I just bought a brick of .22 air rifle pellets (5,000 rounds) for next time I go up to the country, I can shoot my friends rifles as much as I want as long as I pay for the ammo :D
@HomeDistiller the laws are stupid, but I have always regarded knives (even military ones) to be tools. swords and firearms on the other hand are weapons. I'm a member of the Australasian Knife Collectors group which keeps me covered for pretty much everything (but not using for defense or 'carrying' on the street)
Bob Ordewald i would be looking for an old car engine. such as a suzuki G10. The only problem with those is that they are fuel injected and the ecu would be needed to be used with it, but it would be possible to put a carburettor on it. old car engines are very cheap compared to proper industrial engines, parts are far more readily available too. Try look for a suzuki carry engine, 3 cylinder and uses a carburettor.
@Aussie50 sweet mate. just watched a vid of it running, looks pretty sweet and bloody good nic! super clean. I'm payin off a phone at the moment, almost finished. can ya workout a cheaper price mate, what's your mobile?
