Hopefully RU-vid is compensating you brother. I didn’t see an advertisement so I fear you aren’t. You deserve a good paycheck every month from all the info you share
Hands down the absolute best diesel channel period. I’m sure you have got some interesting stories to tell about dyno runs on the diesel trucks. I would love to see a video one day about dyno runs and another day in the life video. Another great informative video as always brother.
I like the Powerstrokehelp channel. He shows when you need the genuine Ford part and when you need a special replacement part. EDIT: and he shows you just how bad some aftermarket parts can be.
Skyline Fever problem is he’s no longer working on 6.0, 7.3 diesels. 6.4 is also no longer being serviced by Bill. I love my 6.0 and my 7.3 which is literally a million mile survivor...
@@adventuresofwillandshelby6013 Yes, he said those trucks are no longer profitable for him to repair. However, his advice does greatly help DIY-ers and some types of professionals.
I wished I'd a paid better 'tension in school!!! I enjoy listening to smart people. I'm like President Bush, "I'm not very smart but I got a lot of smart people around me"!! I watch every video because I learn something every time.
@@victormcox Oops ! Sorry , bro ; my mistake Well , actually , you succeeded because you got me ! 😉 And happy to see we agree on good ol George ! 😁 Regards
@@trevorchadwick5479 Air starts have a tank of compressed air already. The whole point of air start is to be able to start when the electrical system is taxed due to conditions such as extreme cold. Just google air start diesel and you'll find lots of old trucks with air starts and not a compressor or mother bottle in sight.
I've spent some time watching a few of your videos. I'm not at all mechanically inclined, but I'm keen on reliability especially since I'm considering buying a 30 or 39 foot Class A diesel pusher somewhere in the 2003 to 2008 range. I think you do a tremendous job with your overviews. Where the heck are you located and, when I get to a point I've found an RV I'm interested, are you open to giving some advice on the engine? Also, if it's at all possible, I'd be willing to drive the RV to you to have you give it a thorough inspection if you are open to something like that. Thanks again for your time and attention on this subject, I get a lot out of it. Best of luck to you.
I know positively nothing about diesel engines, and very little about engine mechanics in general, and this guy still managed to make tis easy to understand. Fantastic! Thanks a lot for the info.
Battery to starter cable gets massive current. That high heat, over time, excellerates corrosion, increasing resistance, which makes that cable an additional load on the starter when it's old
Thank you Sir. I own two backhoes. A John Deere 300 and a Massey Ferguson 50A Both are vintage , Your video really helped. I Liked,Shared,Added to playlists. All my best.
I have a 05 5.9 dually that I have done lots of upgrades on. grew up with muscle cars but knew little about diesels but I have learned. My 5.9 has always started right away and never smokes. I consider myself very lucky. I tow a fifth wheel and if your going to work em you gotta work on em. Good maintenance filtration and lubrication.
Years ago the joke about one brand of diesel engines that was very hard starting: If a child walked by your truck on a hot day carrying an ice cream cone, you would need either to start your engine.
To piggy back off your mechanical checks, look for worn/ frozen belt pully. I have had a few belts slow down on cranking from a worn ac compressor bearings.

My 4m51 Mitsubishi stops working whenever am running and the engine is hot.it can't even start right after it stops ,I will have to wait until it cools down about an hour or so before I can start it again.what would be the possible cause of this?

I know this is an old comment, but this may be some knowledge to a future reader. Cold air is more condensed than warmer air, this means more air particles can be crammed together in a given area. This is due to them moving slower and taking up less room. This means in cold environments you are having excess air in the cylinder when the atomized diesel goes to detonate. The air to fuel ratio is different with having more air than normal compared to warm temperatures. So if you are having no issues in the cold, but having issues in warmer conditions I would start with a bigger air intake, and see if that allows for better mixture. I could expand further but I’m not trying to write 10 page essay, that no one may read. TLDR, it is starving for air.
I'm a much better operator than mechanic, but in the course of my time around machinery/trucks I've learned that corroded terminals, contacts and compromised wiring is one of the first things I look for when diagnosing starting or ignition difficulties. Seen a lot of guys replace batteries when it was actually just corroded terminals on the lead wires and batteries. Next up are clogged filters dropping fuel pressure to the pump and injectors. Fuel filters get neglected a lot because of people being a little leery of the process of purging air after the filter is changed.
I have a '95 Ford f250 7.3l powerstroke..... I have to plug it in for an hour if it's under 50⁰ out. Not a mechanic, and my mechanic isn't a diesel guy.... help?
My Dodge/cummins has been acting strange lately today it was almost 30 out and wouldn't start I'm like ok wtf. Checked the wires to grid heater and the battery connection is shot. Tried to use too small of wire to splice and it instantly started smoking!
Just a little fyi. Today I was listening to this video on my way out to check a grinder with a c27. It's having a really long crank before starting and randomly dropping to idle. The issue? Bad wire connection on back of the key switch.
I have 2001 cat D8R with 3406 It's in the dealership for 2 months now . The issue is with diesel line leake , we have changed all line , install new clambs , rebuild the diesel pump and still there is something causing the leakage , it's not on one line , every time we fix a line the leakage come from the next one. Dealership says it's return valve , they changed it and still the same. Any idea or suggestions for my issue ?
You need good atomization of the fuel when injected. If the compression is good it will light. If you have mechanical injection it’s not as fine and tougher to light. I’m from Canada...get a webasto...no more problems and you can heat the tranny and fuel...boom lights at -30 in the wind like summer time...
Bro I need your help for my Mercedes OM603 engine which starts great in the cold start, but when the engine is warmed it cranks very slow and takes a long time to start😕
Diesel van wont start but starts easy if i use quick start spray into inlet ! I see there is a crankshaft sendor fault code so ive bought a new sensor but not fitted yet ! Why/ how does the car run fine after start if the crank sensor is at fault ? Surely if its at fault car wud run badly after start ?? Im struggling to understand ??
First fucking problem is the fuel injector pump or bad injectors ,after that no excuses for not start whit cool whether ,special whit Perkins engines!!!
Great work!! I have a 3126 in my FL70 quad cab 4x4 service truck and get along good with cold starts but have had the injector oil seal problem. Ended up with oil in my fuel. Keep up the good work.
I had a bad exhaust gas temp sensor go bad on my paccar mx13. Temps would get almost 1,000 degrees and not settle down. Replaced it got the power back and fuel mileage back as well 😎
I used it, no problems on my CM870. This year I drive MXS and using Two Cycle Oil, seems like it pulls better, I’m pretty sure ATF is fine. ATF for ISX 871 might not work if it’s not deleted cause it might block you DPF filter faster. Do some research on google, just type in in google search whatever you want. Also check out www.rawze.com
I have a question for you. When you use ether to start a diesel over and over ive heard it becomes dependent on it as in it wont or is very hard to start without ether. What causes this.
From what I've read its from excessive ether use that washes the cylinder walls and rings causing lower compression over time which results in having to use more ether.
The force generated by the ignition from using ether is so high that it actually compresses the connecting rods and shortens them which leads to the pistons stopping further down the pot at tdc and resultant loss of compression. Ether can cause broken rods as well. The rings and grooves get damaged which does not help. It's a slippery slope to an expensive engine rebuild or replacement.
If adding ether to the air flow is necessary to start an engine, the continual use of ether is an issue which appears only as a very small blip on the radar screen. Josh provided many examples of no starting incidents, i.e. bad batteries, bad battery cables, sucking air, etc., and their troubleshooting procedures to repair the no-start issue.
My modern 2016 Mercedes with its 2.2d OM651 never ceases to amaze me. You hit the starter button and within a nanosecond it starts !. I swear the pistons hardly move and it just starts. How they achieve that i will never know. Love diesels !. 200bhp and 420NM, and 72mpg. Whats not to like.
Certain motor oils are designed to be thinner (less viscous) when cold and more viscous (thicker) when hot. For instance, multi-grade or multi-viscosity motor oils show a low viscosity at low temperatures and high viscosity at high temperatures. I believe you indicated the opposite. Did I misunderstand?
I just had my 6.0 2005 F-250 Diesel New head gaskets replaced. No new heads but every thing but not the turbo. That was just rebuilt. Runs good BUT hard to start every morning. Upsetting. They will not help me fix the problem. How do you get the compression air racial repaired?
I'm working on a 1981 Perkins 4.108 , on a sailboat. I noticed the fuel injector pump timing was not straight onto it's MARK, but advanced. This engine has extremely low compression(230-250) is this something a mechanic will do "advance the timing" to help out a low compression engine?... Service manual indicates the timing mark should align to the two marks for a new engine.
I think it's trick to make engine starting easily , by advance fuel timing to aid burning fuel .but it will affect on your exhaust valves since firing happen as exhaust valve little bit open , you will notice higher exhaust temperature .
@@TheMakadimic thank you so much for responding!... I am in the process of rebuilding the engine now to resolve the engine starting problem... I'm just wondering from a diesel mechanics "diagnosis" point of view if that's why someone before me may have advanced the fuel injection pump?
I hard a hard start on my 1kzte. After I had my injectors serviced. One of the fuel lines of the pump was sweating a tiney bit. Couldn't tighten the connector anymore. Took the connector off, sprayed with carby cleaner. No longer sweating.
I bought a van that has been sitting for a 2-3 years in a parking lot of a company. I wanted to start it so i can get drive it to my garage next door. The issue is i have no clue how can i maybe lube the cylinders so i dont make any damage
Hi Ape just discover this channel, really helpful info Thanks. What about hard starting engine when in working temperature? I have mondeo mk5 2.0l diesel TDCi ,this is Ford fusion in USA .I live in UK and the weather is between 0 and 25 celsius over the year.I have an issue when engine is hot. If I stop the engine and try to start it straight after is turning much more than usually need to start, but I use a start stop and the engine shut and start on a traffic light for example I dont havy any issues.just a note Camshaft position sensor is new and is genuine from main dealer. So if you give me any guide will be much appreciated.
Really good video, I learnt a lot, thanks.. I have a fiat ducato van, 2.3L 120 multijet... with a hard start... It cranks for about 5 seconds, then struggles into life, with a ploom of white smoke when it starts, and runs rough for about 5 seconds, I normal blimp the throttle, then its perfectly fine.... from the sound of your video this is a cold misfire... most like injector? is there anything else I should check? I have checked battery, cleaned and tighten the battery cables (positive was loose, made it better but still issue). injector leak off test done which was fine, changed the pressure regulator as I thought it should hold pressure in the rail when off as I was told this has a check valve (your video says its doesn't hold pressure). I checked FPR sensor on my OBD, starts around 5000PSI, idles 6300PSI, goes up when I press the throttle as expected. when I shut off it drops to 58PSI in about 10 seconds, if I then check it 2 days later then its still sat at 58psi never goes down below that, but sometimes I've watched it with nothing running, and the 58psi will change to 26psi for just a second then go straight back to 58psi, so it seems to work, but also maybe seems dodgy.... is it also worth checking compression or timing as a few people have suggested?... Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated thanks :)
Good Day. What gives an engine torque. some engines come with the same horse power but different torque settings. Detroit series 60 comes with 500 HP and 1650 torque. I wish that to be 500--1850
Josh, just this morning 01/30/2020 i ran into an owner operator having trouble starting is truck. I asked him to crank the engine it was turning with good power, told him sound like the injectors where not supplying enough fuel to the engine he loosen the supply line to fuel pump cracked engine good supply and he changed both fuel filters, still didn't start. after a while he said to he remembers having this same problem. so he started to pull on the wire assembly from battery that leads to engine, and just like that it started right away, you think it might be a bad wire that leads to sensors to E.C.M. I'll stop there. thx
I have 2006 vw sharan 1.9tdi my engine doesn't start immediately the crancking seems normal but it takes like 4 to 5 seconds to start up even if the engine is hot.. i checked that battery it's good as new could be a starter failing! I am not good with mechanical problems.. but i did a computer diagnos and doesn't show me any kind of engine or sensor defect
I'm working on a giant lemon (2013 Maxxforce DT 7.6). The engine surges badly at idle after warm up. I depress the accelerator to a 30% angle or less and the engine smoothes out. What could it be?
I have a 1983 BJ42 with 3B Diesel on it. Before removing the cylinder head the engine was starting very easy but after the head job, it takes some time. Will appreciate any help.
I can't count how many times I have ran into hard starting problems on all types of engines due to bad starting system primary power circuits. Almost all of them due idiots who think that those shitty clamp on battery cable ends are good for anything and or when used on obviously rotten heavily corroded cables. I've even had morons claim their starting systems were so good they could make their battery terminals/cable ends and even cables smoke when doing a real hard cold start! W T F? NO! they were not good. Their cables were corroded to bit s and they had the stupid cheap ass clamp on replacement ends on top of that! Just doing proper updates to replace such bad wiring with new properly made cables of the same or larger size with ALL connection points on both sides attached to clean and properly located tie in points ( not 2 or more 0 - 4/0 ground cables terminated to a single 3/8" stud that wasn't even on the engine or starter body where they should have been) solved problems of being hard starting at 40F now not being a problem even at 0F!
"mechanical faults don't typical get better has the engine warms up" faulty followers and a slightly bent rod do, unfortunately I experienced that on my engine. Good tips there, specially the vacuum before high pressure pump!
This is why a 335 cummins I drove in the early 70s was sweat, it had a compression release you could spin that sucker even with a weak battery and fire it up quick when you released the handle.
Hello everybody. Can anyone tell you how much it costs to license? I have 10 years of track repair experience. If I arrive on the green card, will I be able to work as a mechanic?
Or you have that water-cooled intake air aftercooler or what it was. As Cummins Big Cam had, there was a bad engine starting when really cold. Without ether pump never starting cold.
My 3046 cat engine on my d5 dozer will not start without ether at first, burns a ridiculous amount of oil but runs great. I’m thinking maybe worn vale guides and or a bad exhaust side turbo?
If i manually prime my toyota corolla d4d 2003 then it starts much better in the cold, in the mornings. Does this suggest a fuel pump or fuel tank/line pressure loss overnight ? thanks ?
Some of the old trucks had a t-handle you'd pull to relieve the compression in order to get the engine turning over. And no I'm not referring to the t-handle for shutting down the old Detroits. Also, I remember trucks that had a different voltage/amperage for the starting system.
Basically the injectors is controlled by a high pressure stream of oil that turns on the injectors if you have a miss it could be and injector but there also could be other issues
I had a 5.9 common rail that about every 3rd or 4th time I would crank it, that it would have to turn over twice instead of firing on the first rotation like usual.
I also hear a possble hissing sound, suggesting an air leak, thus compression is not being achieve. Toyota replace the fuel filter and may not have used a new seal perhaps ?
So informative. My problem with my series 60 is it feels like there's a draw on the batteries. I have 4 brand new batteries and a kill switch. I'll check the wires. Hopefully its contact issues.
