This nice little Tecumseh 4HP mower came in. It would not start but it did run for a few seconds. There was a surprise with the blade. Also a great look at the governor.
We love those close ups, like the carburetor close up. Give time for camera to focus. I got a good insight now about how the governor works from inside the crank case to the outside linkage to the carb from watching your videos. Thanks! I use a long nose Vise grips to pinch off that fuel hose. Bought a cheap $5 one on ebay, serves that purpose my intended use. Good quality too. Texted my son to purchase this same cheap $5 tool, and he texted me a PIC of the same one he just bought for $5 ... a real coincidence, or we think alike. Hey, a thumbs up for how well you're organized for bench work.
Good job. So now I know I have a Tecumseh Carburetor on my sears Craftsman mower, and mine didn't want to start for the last lawn cutting. So, I get to use my new small red 'gas squirting can' (a Oilier Can like yours from Ebay) to see if she'll start today. Thumbs Up Bruce.
The summary at the end is very helpful because that is quite like a lesson for lawn mower repairs. I like very much how well organized your bench is. My one is much smaller and I too often use it to store things on it. Have a good one 👍
Vitamin D3 is good for building up your resistance towards colds, good for the immune system especially. I'm 72 and I taking it on my own during this COVID Pandemic.
Nicely done Bruce! I never was a big fan of Tecumseh, but I do lament their demise as they were iconic. I can remember when you saw a mower on display in the stores it was always a Briggs or Tecumseh.
I enjoy working on the Tecumseh ‘s more than I do the Briggs and Stratton’s. Don’t get me wrong, I like working on the Briggs, but the Tecumseh ‘s are more simple. Great video Bruce!
It sounds like you are missing a governor spring or adjustment. They don't usually need adjusting. You need to know what kind of motor you have. . So goggle or you tube this---- Briggs 6.75 governor, Honda Governor Tecumseh governer or whatever motor is. on it. This may help if you have a Honda ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UTypWi__ng4.html
Bruce, a little tip, the black Nitrile gloves are much better to use. They may be a little tighter but they won't fall apart like the blue gloves. I use to use those until I got the black ones, I got the large or X large I think. They are a little harder to get on but you can use them over and over again. I have used the same gloves about three times and they are still good to go yet. Give them a try, Harbor Freight has them in stock. I think you will like them better.
You might want to buy some Tecumseh parts while you can, I have a sears craftsman push mower with the Tecumseh that I have passed down to my son now, It is a mid 90s model and still mows good, we have used it so much the self propel has wore out and I removed it, but still works as a push mower. All that has been done to it in the late 90s I had to clean the carb, and in about 2015 I had to put a new coil on it, and I have replace the pump bulb. Other than that oil changes and a spark plug change now and again. sorry for writing a book here.
I like Tecumseh engines. Here is a neat older promotional piece by the company. Only lasts about 4 minutes. Interesting that it is touting "a pressurized oil distribution system" that no one else has. Better, apparently, than the typical splash lube system. Ever seen this Bruce? I have never cracked open a Tecumseh (never had to!), only a few Briggs. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DaAgTT0KYoE.html
Bruce, What model / kind of camera do you use? My little samsun just died and need to purchase a new one... I notice you can tell that your zoomed in on your subject. I like that feature. Art
Customer......My mower does not cut the grass....You ..Looking at the upside down blade....WELL there's your problem !!...I would feel bad for the person and fib to them and tell them it just needed sharpened
Yep. You have to protect people sometimes. Plus, we have to have some compassion. Even after years of this, I can still do pretty stupid things -- like trying to start a mower with the plug wire disconnected! That's one reason I don't like have customers watch me work ;-) It can be embarrassing.
Good Job and video Bruce. I can't imagine it was cutting very well with the blade on like that he will think you did something amazing when he sees how well it cuts. I agree that the tecumseh's get a bad rap There older carbs where very simple and easy to work on. The gripe I had about the older tecumseh's was that you could only run them crossways across a hill or bank in one direction or they would pump all the oil out of the engine. LOL Have a great day. God Bless!!!
Now the lawnmower is going to have a cold. 😂 Anyway shower with hot water, the hottest you can withstand, flu and cold won't last a week. Works for me anyway 👍
They still make Tecumseh engines. The corporation was bought out by a Chinese concern and are producing Tecumseh engines. They have cheapened them even more than they had been in the last years. It still saddens my heart.
In fact I think you had a LCT engine not long ago.... I forget what it was on.... It was a Horizontal so I think it was a PW ............ You started a parts list yet ???
Tecumseh closed its engine plant December 15th 2008 and sold its Peerless transmission assets to Husqvarna Certified parts bought the engine plant but yes Tecumseh is no longer made.. it's getting harder to find these parts for the older Tecumseh..
Bruce Pender I have a old Roto Spader 1974.... 4 horsepowe vertical I rebuilt the main gears and seals and bearings.. I would like to put a Briggs engine on this but... The shaft sizes are different... I also have a 1978 Jiffy tiller 6 horsepower vertical it works well but the Tecumseh problem... Both of these units are solid cast-iron lowergearr cases and not chain drive.. like the new ones are.. this goes to show you that proper care of this type of machinery and it will last a lifetime.. I have my own stack of carburetor parts but other parts like coils and such just unavailable.. so I look for Alternatives and mix and match.... Times for sure are changing.. good luck in your Ventures
Oregon has been producing and selling Tecumseh parts. Some of the carb kits I have received were from Oregon and the black bowl gaskets and such. Good job Bruce. I think we all have got sidetracked and put a blade on upside down in our time. I just laugh at myself and turn it over.
