Pro tip: just use a jack to lift up the mower. You dont need to drop the deck. DONT use a friggin pipe wrench, use a socket with breaker bar, better yet use an impact gun, should take you approximately 30 seconds to do this.

"Someone just drove it into the ground." One of the rare times that this statement could be taken literally.

Excellent. I'm good with this type of mechanical stuff, it's actual engine repair that my knowledge runs short :)

Thanks! I'd probably do ok with a traditional engine.... the vehicle engines these days with all the electronics make it hard to accomplish much.

While I appreciate you showing the step's involved in dropping the deck & this video may help in the future if I ever have to, let me begin by stating there's no reason to drop the deck if all you're doing is changing the blades, or taking them off to sharpen as I did a earlier today. Honestly had to check the video date to see if it was an April fools joke. My mower is an MTD 38 inch cut. For anyone wondering about socket size, it's 15\16th's Just jack it up until you have enough clearance, use axle stands or proper blocks to ensure it can't fall off the jack, don't rely on jack alone. Key in off position, belt tension lever in idle position (almost impossible for engine to accidently start if blades can free wheel) Take off plug wires if you're still concerned about accidental start. Climb underneath & undo the bolts, a clamp to block the blades from turning as you used is recommended. An impact will have the blades of in less than 5 seconds Please don't use a pipe wrench on nut's or bolts unless you plan on replacing them with new ones. P.S. you had a prime opportunity to clean the inside of the deck while the blades were off. Part of mower maintenance is clean the grass buildup inside the deck. Easiest to do if you hose it out after every use. Never get's a chance to build up that way & only takes a few minutes.

Sounds like you should make your own video. But thank you for sharing an equally involved, but different way to do this RUFFUS.

@@TheAverageDan There's already plenty of video's on RU-vid regarding this. I just spelled it out. The actual process is rather easy & I'll be doing it again tomorrow morning because my blind ass didn't see the rope dog toy before I started cutting & will have to check the blades. Might as well resharpen them again if they're not damaged. Hardest part for me is raining it up with a jack (takes about 5 minutes) Once I'm under there, it's a 2 second job with an impact gun per blade. I'd like to make a recommendation for you . It'll be handy for RV camping & automotive repairs when on the road, or at home.. Get a decent cordless impact gun & set of quality impact sockets. I personally have a Dewalt, mainly because all my other cordless tools are Dewalt & the batteries interchange. It'll be a heave sent tool to have if you ever have to change a tire on the side of the road, or at a camp spot.

@@ruffus8039 3 years ago when I made this video I didn’t have the tools I have now and there were less videos on the topic. I’m sure it will be a much different experience this time around as the mower is due for some sharp blades.

@@ruffus8039 I now carry a Dewalt impact driver in my camper and I have a second one in the garage. The right/best tool certainly makes for quicker work but since not everyone is as fortunate it’s nice to have alternative methods to get the job done.

Thanks for the video, my blades seized up because I don't use it enough, so I will take deck off like you and try to get the bushings apart. will probably grind the blades a little with a hand grinder.
@pedronator22
@pedronator22 6 лет назад
I took the deck off and it WASN'T THE BLADES seized up, it was something that looks like brakes on a bike (can see one at 11:48 in your vid on right side in the pully) that wasn't letting go when it should, If I knew that I could have saved a lot of time just prying in the right spot. maybe this might help someone, thanks again for the vid.

Got everything off but the blades, they are so rusted on there that I could have a elephant sit on the end of my wrench and it still won't come loose, heat and Penetrating did nothing against those damn bolts, im now fully convinced that those bolts and blades are one in the same
