Yasser Abbas: Will there be armed conflict over Nile dam dispute? | Talk to Al Jazeera

At 7,000 kilometres (4,350 miles), the Nile is Africa’s longest river. But a mega project, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, has triggered a major dispute in the region.
While Addis Ababa says the dam is crucial to its economic development, Cairo calls it an existential threat. And Khartoum fears the project will increase the risk of flooding and affect the safe operation of its own dams on the river.
Can Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt find a diplomatic solution to their dispute, or will it escalate further? Sudan’s Irrigation Minister Yasser Abbas talks to Al Jazeera.

In 1991, Egypt supported Eritrea's independence against Ethiopia and supported it militarily in its victory in 1998, and currently we support the separatist Tigray and Oromoa war, all of this, and Ethiopia was unable to respond or do anything to Egypt.🇪🇬🇪🇬🇪🇬🇪🇬🇪🇬💪 And soon the dam will get destroyed ^^

Huge respect to both, though am an Ethiopian I do understand the predicament Sudan is tied in. Sudan shoulders Egyptian pressure but also believes my country's right to utilize its resource. My country will not sign an agreement that makes it liable for natural disaster like draught. It's not long ago when we Ethiopians were begging for food aid because of severe draught while the rest of the world looked down on us, we know what its like to suffer and never wish it upon others let alone on neighbours! If Sudan and Egypt do not understand this then keep on threatening with your military power which will lead to more anger from the Ethiopian part.

Ethiopia is not dreaming but she has at least 86% Nile water in her hands and ownership. Egypt is the one dreaming a nightmare to get for free something that is not for her and is not in her territory. Before demanding a free Nile water, Egypt needs to allow all ships passing through the Suez canal for free and also give her oil and gas for free to the countries like Ethiopia because she has very little of them. You like it or not, free Nile water is becoming history for ever. You need to be friendly in order to buy it in the future. Nations are selling and buying river waters right now including USA, Canada, Australia, Chile, South Africa, Lesotho and so on. An ordinary Ethiopian could disprove Mr Abbas’ full of lies! The Sudanese intellectuals & government know very well that this Dam doesn’t hurt anyone. They know the selfish stand of Egypt from the get go. Ethipia invested its heart & mind to bring peace in Sudan! Yet, seeing Ethiopia’s temporary internal political conflict, Sudanese politicians sold their soul to Egypt, and now they start threatening for war! Time will tell who will pay the ultimate price! from what I heard the minster has no problem with filling of the dam the thing is Sudan and Egypt want to secure a biding agreement on the future of the dam and sharing of water. Here z problem water is a generational resource & the 2 countries want to secure the interest of their future generation so why do they expect Ethiopia will given in the interest of the future generation. so the way forward is talk talk talk.
