Highlights of the career of Carl Yastrzemski, compiled for the unveiling of his sculpture by Armand LaMontagne on behalf of the Sports Museum of New England in 1990.
I saw his grandson play against the Pawtucket Red Sox in May this year . He plays the game the same way as his grandfather and appears to be a a very humble and nice kid. As I watched him I couldn't help wonder if Yaz himself was sitting there somewhere . Yaz truly gave it his all and made the adjustments as age came into play. I was fortunate enough to have grown up watching him
Yaz was a true professional and humble; never a braggart, or cocky like many of today's players that do their stupid little dances on the bases, or that walk around all cocky and are so full of themselves.
That throw to the plate at 2:26. I was there. It was my first game ever at Fenway. I was 9 years old. I'll never forget that throw. Yaz will always be my hero.
I wore # 8 when I was in little league....Yaz was my favorite player, my little league team ( the Washington Senators went on to win the Town championship in 1964.....I got to wear a beauiful jacket with my name embroidered, with my name on the sleeve.....unfortunately in 7th grade I went to my locker and was told by my old supposed friend that I didn't deserve to wear the jacket ,because I rode the bench.......I'll never forget that Noel Anderson.......who went on to be a Vice President of Pepsi Cola in the New England area........Noel if you are reading this, I am happy for your success in life , but I'd like you to know how much your comment hurt..........
That's exactly what that was. The California Angles defeated the Detriot Tigers in the second game of a double header. Had the Tigers won, there would have been a one game playoff between the Tigers and Redsox.
I had Yaz's rookie baseball card and the complete set of NY Yankees baseball cards way back in 1961. Treasured all of them. But sadly, my mother threw them away thinking that it was just junk. After all these decades, I still have never forgiven her for doing so.
