Definitely a wake-up call. Fascinating learning. I don't have Showtime, but gonna get it to watch. The destruction we're doing is mind-blowing. Makes me sad, angry & most of all inspired & motivated to do my part by making changes added to changes I have been making. There's so much going on in my mind from the realization of the danger our planet's in already & from watching this, from questions to solutions, etc., I can't put into words. But I enjoyed watching this & thank u for letting us view it for free. Can't wait to see more. :-)

I will say this, as powerful as it was, I've never been a fan of having celebrities do the endorsing of a specific thing. However, I understand that half the reason is because even though this was introduced in the 80's in scientific circles and eventually the public through news, nobody even blinked. It came from politicians and famous people in some regards so the effect becomes more of a popular appeal. However, that presentation does not mean AGW is not happening, it just means the exposure methods dictate how the message is passed around. Good job on doing up a good vehicle for a positive message and I look forward to future episodes (I don't have cable TV and heard about this on our NPR station)

I am about to turn 21 years old, and I am terrified of what future I may be going into with the way this climate change is taking us. But by watching this film, It was an eye-opener. This needs to be released in theaters so that people can get the awareness for it.

But it's always better to avoid than to offset. But above all: be happy. being scared or sad helps nobody.

Go Harrison Ford !!! Even as an aware ecologist, seeing how well made this film was (to say nothing of watching Harrison Ford take on Indonesian PM) is truly inspirational. I was also very pleased to see solutions in the film (rethinking palm oil for example). Keep up the Good Work!

Half way through an animal ecology degree and the more I learn, the more I understand and the more horrified I am about what we are doing to this planet. My wonderful tutors, research scientists have mountains of scientific evidence and brilliant solutions to bring damaged ecosystems and species back from the brink. Yet the powers that be are corrupted by vested interests and lack the political will to implement change. How maddeningly frustrating it must be for scientists! So tragic that Homo sapiens so fatally flawed by our own greed will ultimately cause the demise of our own species.

I have enjoyed this very informative program, it never ceases to amaze me that so many people think of themselves as both Christian and Republican, to me, the two are irreconcilable. This program shows how much all people lie to themselves, and to each other, because, meat eating is also another thing that contribute to climate change, yet no one mentioned it. We all need to change our lifestyles, even if it seems like shutting the stable door when the horse has bolted.

Many, highly educated people I know freely admit this reality is just more than they can handle. They function by excluding these issues from their consciousness. Their default position is to wait until they're overtaken by events and hope for the best. Consider it a form of Andean fatalism. I only wish that climate change was the only existential threat we're facing but it's not. It is compounded by over-population, over-consumption and our obsessive addiction to exponential growth. There were under 3-billion when I was born. Now we're at 7+ heading to 9-billion or more. At the same time our individual ecological footprint is growing, especially as China, India, Brazil and other emerging economies generate their own 'consumer class'. We are already consuming Earth's resources at 1.5 times the planet's replenishment rate and we're increasing that imbalance rapidly. This manifests in several ways, some visible to the naked eye from space: deforestation, desertification, the collapse of global fisheries, the draining of our aquifers and the accumulation of pollution of our soil, air and waters at rates exceeding the environment's capacity to cleanse our resources. This is a candle burning brightly from both ends and yet we keep insisting on finding ways to speed up the burning. Growth is the answer to everything. Good luck.

What's worse is that there are technolgies that could help our adaptation to the consequences of climate change and in turn improve the climate future; but it is difficult to convince public and private investment in these new energy options. Just two months ago, Riau, a province in Indonesia known for it rich palm oil plantation, were covered with yellow smoke. Schools closed for weeks and hospital filled with patients with severe breathing sickness. The smokes came from people burning old field to replant new palm trees. Government? They are too busy with coming election. I hope this series will helps to change things.

Would it help to organize and discuss the smoke pollution in schools, hospitals, and community centers? When people realize everyone has a shared experience there is an opportunity to direct that human energy into action. Hopefully, people in Indonesia can also see that people buying the palm oil are concerned. It is possible to share the experience of the people in Indonesia with the concerned consumers of palm oil. We have to start talking.

Stop buying products with palm oil if you want to take away the market for this insane deforestation in e.g. Indonesia. Just look at the packets and never buy stuff that says palm oil or vegetable oil (in which case its definitely palm oil, but the manufacturer is trying to conceal that it is).
@ChrisMclean126
@ChrisMclean126 10 лет назад
***** Exactly. It is a serious problem for working families. Either the palm oil industry magically self-regulates itself, or the consumer takes on the burden of finding an alternative. Think of how much fun economists are having with our dilemma? What about the rich who profit from the palm oil industry. Who are they?

There is "Day After Tomorrow" but it is so blown out of proportion that it actually distances the viewer from the very real impacts of climate change. And it uses the "wise savages" trope in that people from developed countries are saved by people from developing countries at the end, where we know that quite the opposite is happening. People in developing countries are suffering the most and developed countries are trying to shut refugees out and pretend it's not our problem.
@ttmallard

The context now is that we put 3.05-ppm of CO2 into the air last year a new record, long-term average for the Pleistocene is 1-ppm/1000-years, end of the last glacial during warming 1-ppm/170-190 years, sea-level rose 3mm last year both of these showing exponential gains. So what does that mean when it takes 50-70 years for a change to be noticed? This is due to us being on a water planet with a massive biology that interacts with CO2-O2 balance and these processes take time, normally humans should never notice a changing climate, it does happen as ice-ages come and go.. We are committed to 25m/82ft of sea-level rise at 405-ppm CO2, consider that sea-level continues to rise for many years after a rising CO2 turns around and drops, with only one group having brought up limiting CO2 to 350-ppm and that's way too high we need 280-ppm or below. That's reality for the planet, 280-ppm is the correct amount of CO2 proven over time, nothing else is viable long-term. For religious people that's the value God picked for Eden's climate, ok? For transportation biofuel grow algae from seceondary sewage effluent at your local treatment plant for more biodiesel than all fuels burned daily per person in the USA if done nationally. Install solar-thermal collection-storage as part of all building heating-cooling systems, the solar-thermal can be used for refrigeration as well and this is to recognize most energy used is for heating-cooling not electricity. So all these predictions of needing mass "energy" are really from using Steam Age methods instead of modernizing. Palm oil is a cash racket and has nothing to do with sustainable agriculture, just sayin' ...

I've been aware of climate change since the '70's, along with James Lovelock's GAIA Hypothesis. And when the CO2 levels go up and the temp stays the same?. .... It doesn't matter how many predictions fail to come true we continue the scare campaign. They told us here in Australia that our drought was the new normal and we wouldn't have rain again. The next 2 years we had massive floods and large floods the 3rd year. We didn't build dams (no rain) based on these same scientists advice and built desalination plants at massive billions cost. Because of the floods these desal plants sit idle (except WA), unused and not required. Rusting. Storms and bushfires are lower today in the US and Aust than they were decades ago. This propaganda is released because they are loosing the war in science. Facts have a way of winning through. And the same scientist predicting sea level rise bought property (like Al Gore) at sea level. And did these celebrities consider any other learned opinions? Why has Prof. Judith Curry changed her mind? Certainly wasn't a great career choice. Of course climate change is real. just a strawman argument.
@k9rx7
@k9rx7 10 лет назад
and what energy company is paying your mortgage? The temps in Australia have been record highs - a new "norm" is being established. The rains are regional - most of the country is under severe draught unseen before. As for wild fires - seriously? LESS?! We moved from AZ because after having lived there nearly a decade the last few years were plagued by fires most of the year. Any scientists working on GCC say: you can't pick one area and make a definitive statement. Its the world overall that is getting hotter - some areas WILL get more rainfall.... others will get drier and drier.

Gary Myers What's your point about my mortgage? What have energy Co's to do with it? (Or is that an intended slur?) 1. It's Global warming, not Australian. Record cold in US, Britain, Europe. So what? No one argues it's not warmer today that is was 2 or 3 decades ago but here in Perth we have not reached temp high from 1977 (if I remember correctly). Unlike my childhood (70's) where 40-44 were not uncommon (and I think the 45 or was it 47 I saw in the records) it struggles to make it over 40 these days. Truth is global temp has been stable for around 17 years. If you climb a mountain to land on a plateau, if you walk 100 metres inland, you will be at the highest ever for the last 100 steps. Doesn't mean it's still going up. (ie. it's spin). When the BOM put out that we had max temp. not one capital or major city had it's max temp. Bit suss and they won't release how they worked it out. As for wild fires!! When mad green environmentalists prevent clearing or backburning and when more people are moving to bush settings (and the young kids who like starting fires) you have an 'environment' (sic) more prone to bush fires that gain attention or damage property and even life. However there is no evidence we have more bushfires. We've had much bigger fires many decades ago. Particularly the greenies preventing safe clearing and backburning means much more fuel for the fires that do start. Even the IPCC report admits there is little evidence for more fires or more storms. It's just hype and lies. Places have always got hotter, drier, wetter etc. Climate has always changed. No hard evidence we are having such a large effect. There did seem to be some good research that suggested land clearing of trees reduces rainfall. It's a pity the film mixes in some decent environmental concerns with the AGW tripe. Get past the slurs and take a gander at the dark side so you can consider both sides. 'One man seems to have made his point until the other comes and presents his side.'

Nathan Ellery Ok.... so go to Skeptical Science dot com.... if you really want to know the truth - EVERY question, every 'theory' about how its wrong, that climate change isn't real is covered there. Climate change is REAL, MAN is the cause. Period. End of story. Lets just agree to disagree. Some day you can look me up and send me an apology for being wrong - confusing the issue with non-science arguments from a non-scientist. Delaying actions. Making matters worse.
@NathanEllery
@NathanEllery 10 лет назад
Gary, that you think opposing arguments come from non scientists tells me you've been sold a lie. I visit SkeptSci and I understand his relationship with Lewindowsky the psych who misrepresents others to try to paint them falsely. How about you visit Jo Nova and read about the corruption of real science. Matters are worse when we spend billions of dollars on non-problems and into the coffers of con-men like Al Gore and chinese solar panel makers whilst they pollute their own rivers with real pollution. It's not about computer models or theories, it's about real world data and the computer models have it massively wrong.

A few people have been posting that it's the fault of big companies and not us. I reckon that this video is trying to say that although big companies are a huge contributing factor, we can't sit around twiddling our thumbs thinking that "the big companies should stop" and that's it. We need to do something to stop them. One person telling them to stop isn't really gonna do much but if all of us join together, we can put a stop to them and hopefully stop climate change as well!

Your intuition is correct. There is a disconnect between the science and creation of policy. The concerns of state politics, economics, international relations, and security have a larger voice than climate policy. The concerns of state politics, economics, international relations, and security have a larger monetary budget. Doing what is necessary will not be possible until the above mentioned priorities become altered within states. States have an understandable resistance to rapid alteration of priorities. The great tragedy is that states can only prepare to respond/react to calamities because they do not have the ability to prevent them. No state is sharing a real plan to prevent [continued] climate change because no one has a plan. We have a need for states to be agents of change that respond/act to prevent calamities [climate change events]. We do not have this capability. The citizens are burdened with the responsibility, and the risk of action. That is the reality of our situation. It is absurd how unprepared we are, and it is absurd we do not have large scale capability to prevent continued climate change. Truly, these are dangerous times.
@MarvinConnell
@MarvinConnell 10 лет назад
Chris Mclean Nevermind the dangerous times... We know what the problem is - we know the cause of the problem & hence we should act... I don't like this 'making things public' idea soo much, because most people aren't smart or realize that things - 'the system' - don't have to remain as is & can\must be changed... Plus I see them talking but not doing what I believe should be done in order to fix things... I would not go to the Governor(was that what he said? =]) - I would get my head of state to go to their head of state about it etc... I honestly KNOW that we no longer need gasoline etc engines(I see car manufacturers talk about new efficient\hybrid engines & I know they're full of it, because I know they could go straight electric but are holding back because of what not needing gas would mean to economies etc)& I'm sure with the correct data can figure out ways to sort out our 'needs' which leads to deforestation(& even maybe how to deal with the green house gases) - but the MONEY system HAS to no longer be BEFORE we can make things better... & not after seeing this video - I feel bad about what mankind is doing to itself, for the sake of MONEY... In the end I say - mankind's system, way of thinking, values etc needs an update(to 1.1 or what have you)...
@64jcl
@64jcl 10 лет назад
I agree, but scientists are often told not to say what to do with this knowledge, and leave that in the hands of politicians. Well there is a major problem when e.g. the USA has 50% of the politicians not believing there is a problem in the first place. Other than that the IPCC report actually contains 3 documents, the last installment soon to be released will be for policymakers about ways to solve these problems.
@ChrisMclean126
@ChrisMclean126 10 лет назад
Marvin Connell OK. Lets see if I understand you correctly? You are advocating for what is called a "top-down" approach to policy creation by having the head of state initiate policy changes. You also advocate for changing economic policy. Lets talk about how that works. I use the United States as an example of a state. The US, like all states [nations] that I am aware of, are beholden to the "power," and "security" of economic "interests." This means the business policy of powerful multi-national corporations [of which, most have interlocking boards of directors to navigate their business policy]. The interconnectedness of corporations is a very interesting development if you consider that, in the US, a company has legally protected rights equivalent to those of a citizen. Furthermore, in the US, our Courts upheld the ability of wealthy donors to buy votes [political support], in mass quantity for elected officials. When it is possible to "buy" and "lobby" elected officials to promote your business interests, how then can a divided electorate compete [they cannot]? If we assume the political "power" in the US is with corporate business interests why would poor citizens bother organizing to enact climate policy change that will not be politically supported? Should multi-national corporations have the responsibility to alter the politics of a state to create climate change policy? I do believe they hold most of the political "options." How do we proceed when greed is the currency of politics? Certainly, our values and social systems are inadequate to function with climate change. Do we have time to change social systems? What if we cannot agree on those changes? Then we are left with compromises and altered greed based systems with some irrational hope that we will survive? Will that be good enough for future generations?
@MarvinConnell
@MarvinConnell 10 лет назад
Chris Mclean Firstly - none of the political aspects matter to me... I am not talking politics - I am talking about saving our World... I acknowledge there is a serious problem that needs solving & I am willing to take the necessary steps to solve it - whole heartedly, unlike most people... I acknowledge that the gasoline(etc), palm tree etc businesses are the main source of our problem, that we should & can put a stop to their use, & the only reason we don't stop consumption is mainly because of our dependency on the money system... & being the person I am, I think we should just do what is necessary... I don't want to discuss what we have time to change - WE MUST\NEED TO CHANGE(it's not an option) - I want to start making changes(present my ideas & have them reviewed & implemented accordingly)... About me - I don't use cold medicine like 'normal' people... From my knowledge in school I began consuming vitamin C about 3 times a day since 2005 & hence average .625 colds a year(some years, No Colds... Instead of doing what everyone else does - what I was taught to do - I came up with my own idea & it works... That is what mankind needs - not to continue doing what we were taught to do, but to change how we think & operate so as to obtain better results... Chris - I am an idea man... I observe, I assess, I come up with ideas, solutions etc... I cant & wont talk politics with you - especially since it doesn't matter to me or on the whole... All that matters is our World's survival... We should be willing to do whatever it takes for that to happen & we Must Start, by changing what hinders us most, & that is our Money system... That is the main reason why nothing is TRULY being done about global warming...

I felt peace, love, and could not move I fell in slow motion to the floor after prayer. If you read the bible God gives you choices if you make wrong ones it is not his fault. We are his children if you have your own children do you allow your children to make their own choices as they grow? So, yes man is making some poor decisions and somehow we all need to fix it together. I really enjoyed the show and want to see more.

June & July were really rainy (soggy), but by the time things took and dried out...I was into Aug. with limited rain..Sept is usually more rainy but it was more dry. I plant a lot in pots and raised beds, so they tend to dry out more quickly. All I know is that I would empty my rain barrel and then wait and wait, while in years past I had to add another rain barrel. I am glad that Shippensburg had a good growing season 2013 and I hope that this summer is good for all. My point in sharing my personal experience was that it is easy to say to people to just grow your own, but it is in the "doing" that we are reminded of our dependence on 'mother' earth and we are at the mercy of the climate and weather. Also of importance to note that there are a lot of people who live in apartments and in the city with little room for gardens...there is a great need for community gardens and for buying locally grown food. We must acknowledge our interdependence on each other and the earth that sustains us.

Fuck, that's the foundation of their fucking religion and they're too dense to realize it. Science doesn't disprove god, and if anything it simply explains their god's creation. So if God gave people free choice, and those choices are destroying the planet, let's keep making bad choices because it's God's creation? That doesn't even make sense.

jimeca Surely, any rational concept of God must start with creation through the Natural Laws, such as the workings of simple chemistry. Once upon a time, this was a Divine Mystery that we were supposed to learn through trial and error and learning from our mistakes so that we could learn to live responsibly. These 'people', who are not sapiens but potential sapiens, are certainly not God respecting Christians. They are trying to create Hell on Earth. They treat God as if He should be some kind of obedient pet to their egos, allowing them to do what the hell they want and then protecting them from the consequences of their egotistical actions. It is hardly the Christian concept of altruism and the fight against human egoism but of course, this is the easiest lie to sell to the lowest common denominator.

Commend Showtime and those involved. Really well done, a little on the boring side but better than most I've seen. Sadly, this isn't going to change anything. So many reasons, but what comes to mind immediately are: 1. Only a small number of people will actually see this series because they don't have access. Believe it or not, everyone doesn't have or even can afford subscription television. Want people to see it, show it, the entire series free, send it to high schools and other institutions of learning. Sponsors would be happy to pay for that act of good will. 2. Those unconscionable zealots, lobbyists, and oil industry crooks whose thirst for profit always puts profit before communities, even their own. Just look at what happened in LA today thanks to the good Governor Jindel the number 1 fan of big oil. There are more but I think this gets the point across. When people start standing up, screaming from the top of the mountain tops, i.e. actually doing something other than sitting in their lazy boys eating chips and dip, something might happen then! Don't hold your breath waiting for this to happen, folks are way too comfortable right now.

Hmm? Human ignorance is always a serious threat [a historical enemy of the people]. When public citizens cannot objectively evaluate science, technology, policy, politics, or risks it is already too late. We are in the process of destroying ourselves. This is an era of "damage control." Look at the international politics surrounding the Syrian conflict as an example of our future. Areas doomed by climate change will not be saved or protected. They will be monitored, controlled, and contained. Refugee's will be allowed, war will be tolerated, and mass death will be common. Other state governments cannot tolerate a peer being destroyed by rebellions because that would be dangerous for the continuity of other states. So it will go on. There will be more Syrian conflicts. More death. And more entrenchment of....I'll call them "systems." Ordinary people will simply have to be extraordinary "empathic" [compassionate, empathetic, sympathetic, humane], diplomats themselves. Or we can bury each other.
