When I was in Rome (Italy) I had the good fortune to meet Indian people who were from the eastern part of the subcontinent, from Kerela upwards, but no one really from the north. Someone (had) worked there, though. They had long surnames, which even after years I am unable to pronounce. Very fine people. What intrigues me about this marvelously-singing choir is the fact that its members look so differently: - some have the almond-shaped eyes a European like me would associate with far-eastern ethnicities (Thailand, Viet Nam, China) - the lady behind the lead singer (in the centre of the row) looks like an African American. Do they belong to different ethnicities? Could anyone name them? In what language are they singing? What is the song about? Thanks in advance for any answer!

@@melodies2013 they are from the Beautiful state of Meghalaya, part of of Union of India and they are also called from Seven Sister States , no they are all from India and no one from Africa although we have them too 😊 but in Andaman island and in pocket of Gujarat, we are varied in ethnicity . They are singing songs in Urdu (a language born and evolved in India it's a mix of Sanskrit and Persian originally called as Laskar Boli) large part of north indian spoken dialect very close to Hindi.

In 1961 I went to Shillong as a kid, with my Dad, before he had to move out for 1962 War. Again towards end of my service with the Army, I was posted in Assam Rifles HQ from 2004 for three & half years. Most wonderful fond memories, of stay at Laimukhra, Happy Valley, Laitkor and those wonderful drives towards Jowai. Oh! Shillong, I love you.

Really beautiful. I keep hearing them again n again. Their rendition of jil tapde the is really superb. Also ajib datasani n Vanderbilt mataram. What a choir. Really brings the unity of India into focus. I recently heard them in Dec at the khat gymkhana. A lesson in unity. Shillong choir way to go. May we hear more from you all. What a bright change India witnessing is evident in such programmes. Assam and NE States have fallen in line with rest of the country in developments and in many such respects. The present Central Govt has brought in reforming changes and mission and vision have changed not only with a Govt , but also with the people at large. People are conscious of Pride of India and nationalist spirit is becoming way of life . God may bless our India, Bharat, and its people.
