So what is Geralt doing in Japan?

In dark souls: -status points literally compliments what you invest it with which is good for those that plays perseverance gameplay style and will finish it eventually (dead? put more hp. weak? put more str. etc). -all item and equip stats, effects and locations are fixed (example: good equip, less damage specially on early areas etc). -can get endgame items, equipments and skills early -can finish the game at level 1 only (did it in dark souls 1). -can be finished with pure melee, pure magic or hybrid without too much effort and planing. -can be played and enjoyed by casual players (something to leave, and comeback to try again with less destroyed controllers). -game mechanics for you to explore but has upfront gameplay. -gradual difficulty increase with area progress (unless done random routes, ex: going for quelaag as 2nd boss) -mostly difficult overall (stage, mobs, boss) In nioh: -status points has very less compliments the stat in description, needs 60 levels on the specific stat to show results (which equal to dark souls by 25-30 levels only, 60% of overkill damage). most of the time only increased to gain equip effects. -all equipable items' stats and effects are broadly random and has less noticeable difference with each other (anything you wear does not guarantee better survival or unkillability) unless you soul forge one to increase its level and defence multiplier as you can also inherit effects or reforge to change its effects -can't get endgame items, equipments and skills early, grinding is needed for drop and unlocks -can't be finished at level 1 only, everything needs continuous leveling up. -can't be finished or even get past 7th boss with pure melee or pure magic without precise effort in planing. hybrid is the best option. -not for casual players, too complicated (mostly absolute rage quit with destroyed controllers). -game mechanics are put upfront and mildly practiced in "basic" tutorial but sometimes or most of the time thrown at you on "advance" scenario (like having a lesson and test from your math teacher, a puzzle to figure out or learning to dance to the rhythm). -instant but constant "advance" difficulty behaviors for mobs and bosses -mostly difficult are the stages and mobs themselves, bosses are most of the time easier (with understanding 75-80% of the game mechanics). Had my game ender character for darsouls after 4 startovers (all 3 from before the 4th boss), while having my game ender character for nioh after 32 startovers (30 before 2nd boss, 1 after 5th boss tachibana) darksouls - learning to be you nioh - learning to be someone else while being you

*Hears the bit about enemies not all instantly detecting you* OH THANK GOD, I have horrible memories of dark souls 2 when on the path of trying to get another attempt at the smelter demon, where that issue of enemies all instantly detecting you is a major issue....hopefully you guys know what I'm talking about.....especially with that bridge....fuck that bridge.

I love this game not only because it's one of my favorite games of the last couple years, but also because it familiarized me with the dark souls formula, and got me to breeze through dark souls 2 and 3

Correction Buns, it was not always in development by Team ninja. Team ninja only get the IP a couple of years ago. It was originally announced as a Koei game in 04 as a PS3 early exclusive and went through multiple forms as a dynasty warriors clone, and even turn based RPG at one point. Of course we all know what happend with the Temco-Koei merger in 2009, and It was only after Team ninja got their hands on it 3 or so years ago that they decided to go with a Souls esque combat experience

TBH it looks like Dark Souls with a higher skill ceiling and thats super fucking appealing to me. Its almost like the Hideki Kamiya and Hidetaka Miyazaki had a drunken one night stand and this game was the accidental pregnancy.

Bloodborne, Nioh and Horizon: Zero Dawn (when it's released) are why I bought a PS4. Even then, it was pre-owned and for significantly less then the average price. I've honestly gotten a lot more use out of my Wii U by comparison.

The only reason why I'm not going to get this game any time soon is because after playing Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne recently, I'm completely burned out from the Souls-style games.

Honestly where do you think Dark Souls got there machines from, the old NES Ninja Gaiden games. FFXV got inspiration from Kingdom Hearts and Witcher 3 in terms of gameplay. I think this game looks fun and if i wasn't a poor college student I would play it maybe later this year.

You should focus more on Nioh as a game then compare it to a game that really isnt that as simular to Nioh as they wanna make it seam. Dark Souls is my favurite series aswell but right now i think Nioh is the best fucking game that has and will be realesed this year. i liked your video and i guess mentioning dark souls is inevitable, but from times it feelt like that was all you did. comparing everything to dark souls. i personally think the open world is a little cooler, with an actual interactive hub and all that. but i really like this game (tho i agree on the overwhelming item drops). i finished soulsborne and im like "...so what now". THIS now :) idk if im valid in this or not, but my only complaint is that i feel like the IFrames are a loooooot smaller. thoughts on that, anyone?

I agree with you buns. :) Also enjoying Nioh so far. Only thing I don't like, just as you mentioned, is the masses of loot. It's just too overwhelming.

I was loving it for the first few hours (days?) but then became bored and annoyed. The graphics are ok, the plot is not that deep and doesnt even make any sense, the characters - including blondie's are not the least bit compelling and all the dialogue is forgettable. You keep fighting the same handfull of enemies over and over again and they keep doing the same easily avoidable moves. It isnt challenging, it just sucks to get hit for half your health by some regular dude with a spear. That and the mission style gameplay adds to the sense that you're playing an elaborate dungeon crawler. Then you get to a cheap ass boss like the ice bitch and youre like 'welp shit i got stomped x20; guess i'll go grind some levels fighting the same 5 dudes again.' I mean what is the point, anyway? Still want to like it. Still want to play it for the combat experience, but remain somewhat disappointed. Think ill go replay bloodborne.

I think this video actually convinced me why I strongly prefer Dark Souls, still enjoying Nioh though.

Huge Souls fan. From Demon's Souls to Dark Souls to Bloodborne and all the DLC in between I have overcome it all, and I gotta say... ... OH MY GOD NOT HAVING TO PEG ENEMIES WITH ARROWS/THROWING KNIVES/BULLETS TO SEPARATE FAT ASS GROUPS SOUNDS SO NICE.

Basically, level design, environment design, and boss and enemy design isn't as good as Dark Souls. The feel of the player character is better in Nioh. Difficulty wise, Nioh is more punishing when you do get hit, but it's far easier to not get hit in Nioh. This creates a feeling of annoyance when you die in Nioh because you slipped up and made one mistake and now you're dead. Whereas in Dark Souls it takes a string of mistakes to result in your death. There's a Samurai boss you can fight that I believe is optional and he killed me more than some of the hardest bosses in the Soulsbourne series combined but when I beat him, I didn't yell "FUCK YEAH!" like those other bosses, I said, "Finally..." The loot system is interesting. I like it, as it adds a lot of replayability and incentive to do the side missions, but it is certainly contentious. Although there are several ways to upgrade pieces of gear that you like in order to keep them relevant. Dark Souls is more of an experience. Creatively it's just far superior even when you take away the fact that Nioh wouldn't exist in its current form without it. Nioh is much more gamey and fun. Even when you're mowing down random enemies it's still enjoyable even if it is relatively easy.

So I know this video is super old at this point, but oh well I just played and beat Nioh. Over 300 hours, got all of the trophies for it and the DLC. In regards to difficulty, the first handful of hours is relatively "easy" however eventually the game in my opinion gets much harder than any dark souls game. Most of the bosses, starting around the halfway point can and will one shot you. I am talking from full health, you have 2000 hp the boss hits for 3000. Whereas dark souls, you can definitively learn patterns, so much so that I am sure people have seen the crazy run types people have done. Nioh is MUCH MUCH more about the grind to get better gear. It's basically if dark souls, and diablo had a baby. You can be the most skilled player at Nioh, but if your gear isn't where it needs to be, you will very likely not beat the boss. That was my only problem with it, I don't like getting killed by artificial difficulty I am fine getting killed by my skill level not being where it needs to be. Obviously though, this dislike didn't amount ot much, it and its sequel are both amazing games and are definitely worth a playthrough

I bought it, it was horrible, can't get refund. Lol no, actually I bought both of them not knowing for sure if Id like it, and I don't. I love it. I've never played souls (yet) but I plan to, I bought those and I'll play nioh 1 and 2 before starting souls. Which won't be for about 20 years because I couldn't get past the chained demon, even at level 21. That's right, I grinded 16 hours in the fishing village.

Fantasy elements aside, everyone in this game is a historical person who existed. Willy the 1st White-ass Samurai? Check. Edward Kelley the Alchemist? Check. Derrick the Executioner? Check. (Ever hear of derrick cranes? He invented those)

The comparisons to Dark Souls were annoying, I think. The combat system in Dark Souls works great... In Dark Souls. The combat system designed for Nioh is meant for Nioh. Also, it is much easier to take a combat system from a different game, then integrate and build upon it in a new game, much like how it is easier to mod (tweak) an already existing game versus creating an entire new game. Knights, strong foes in Dark Souls, are usually spaced apart. The peasants are often in mobs though, with their long sticks 'n' such. Ready to hit ye with a torch or pitch fork, or even a stick.

I think it's good but...I'm not a fan of dying in one mistake. I'm a huge souls fan, been playing since Demon's Souls and even though they were unforgiving, they weren't nearly as fast. Boss enemies in Nioh feel like trial and error until you get through the fight without making any mistakes at all. Obviously doable, but It still salted my fries, especially on that hime-enma thing.

Nioh is an awesome game. Got the Platinum and more in this gemstone of a title. Better then darksouls sure i can agree. But it lays in a bloody deadlock with bloodborn. Such amazing titles and now only the future may show of both of thease behemoths will stun us with there awe and might hopefully soon ^-^

I didn't know Geralt was DLC in Dark Souls. On a serious note, I haven't heard of this game before but it looks pretty good. Never played a Souls game before because I hate dying a lot.

Nioh and Bloodborne make me so sad because I didn't buy a PS4. Instead I bought a 3000$ gaming PC. Talk about dumb life choices.

I never finished Ni-Oh, I made it halfway through and became very bored of the enemies. It seemed like to me there weren't enough types. In Dark Souls every single area just about has very varied and completely different looking enemies. In Ni-Oh they just drop in 50 of those big undead samurai with axes, and the same sword and dual sword yokais, then call it a day. I mastered killing them in the very first area to the point where I never get hit by them anymore. Why do I want to keep fighting them over and over?

I really do dislike the random loot, it just feels so much more boring to me than finding well made and created items. Like finding some legendary things can be cool but its never as cool as a loot system like Pokemon, Dark souls etc where its all laid out and when you get something that helps you it feels great. Maybe its just because it feels like borderlands/Diablo with just absolute dumps of items with 99% of them being completely useless and should of just been gold or resources. Was also never interested in crafting when its random stuff like this aswell, just throwing resources at a slot machine. I have only played the first 2 areas so far and then played another game instead. Ill get back to eventually so hopefully then it clicks better with me, I need to try out more playstyles because the spear while it seems strong just isn't very fun to me.

The biggest difference between Dark souls and Nioh is, in Dark Souls even you have the best armor set and weapon in the game, you can still die quite easily if you don't know what you're doing. But in Nioh you can always farm your way out. And with the right gear and high level, you can literally just smash buttons through the game. To me it's like classic Castlevania and Symphony of the night in comparison.

Nioh combat is superior to any of those souls game with different weapons and stance that change everything. So much more satisfying and BETTER and DIFFERENT from freaking stupid soul just roll and hit slow stupid combat mechanic

Pretty good game, lacks variety in a few areas (like visuals or themes just to name two examples), and replayability is just grind for kit with bigger numbers. I got a solid 100+ hours out of it, but it's a mostly one and done kind of deal, I have no desire to return to it like I do with Souls games. Speaking of, there's nothing it does particularly better than Souls either, just different. But what it differs in is good enough for it to stand on it's own. Give it an 8/10.

I've the same issue with games; my time is limited, I can't spend ages on games (fucking around, not knowing where to go, which item and build is the best to go for, etc.); I got crap to do in my life!

Late to the video, but........ I personally prefer the open worlds of Soulsborne games to the map with the mission areas. Still a great game though. Also agree with the amount of loot drops being overwhelming and I haven't even touched the crafting bits. My time is currently being monopolized by Monster Hunter World, but I will eventually go back and finish Nioh.

Nioh is the way it is because of Onimusha

Gonna have to disagree completely with the suggestion that Nioh is more colorful and visually vibrant than the Souls games. It is literally devoid of most colors in most of the levels and every mission seems to take place at night or in a dark cave. The visuals are even more bland than the constant darkness of Bloodborne which had a plot reason to be always nighttime. Nioh doesn't have an Anor Londo, Irithyll, Majula, etc, but just a bunch of Japanese themed buildings shrouded in darkness.

The BEST penultimate comparison for Nioh is Onimusha. And if it weren't for Onimusha, Dark Souls wouldn't exist. *Mic drop

been playing it all day since release, still haven't beaten it. few deaths, so I feel like I'm progressing fairly quickly, so this game is really long which is great! there's lot of goodies to find, definitely check every path you can to find everything. I'm definitely loving this one, more than dark souls even. mainly because of the combat system and how the strategy plays out. it just feels more fair, difficult for the right reasons as you said. not many ambushes and not overwhelming.

It’s still just worse dark souls. The only thing I think it really added to the game genre is the stances. Otherwise the world is worse, the story is less compelling, the bosses are soooo much worse, and the combat is different but I can’t say is worse. It’s definitely not a bad game but I’d so much rather play any souls game. I know this sounded really negative but I really do love this game it’s just not on the level of dark souls and it kind of sucks that it’s destined to be compared to ds

i shat on this game hard when i saw my friend playing the alpha... but then i tried it during the beta and fell in love, it's so amazing. I'm bummed i have to wait for money to buy it, but... i can't wait to get my hands on the full product

Halo 5 is pretty good now that they added a custom game browser. Now we don't have to play the short campaign or the multiplayer that got uncomfortably close to microtransactions, we can make our own random fun!

60fps720p vs 30fps1080p option is just as great as a difficulty select option. It is brilliant, will please everyone, and more publishers need to allow this. Also, this success is needed for Sony, since they lost big time with the Vita (which they abandoned).
