Yello is one of those acts that manages to stay JUUUUUST out of reach of the mainstream while still being too well known to be completely underground... I've enjoyed this band for 37 years and I STILL haven't figured out how to describe them to anyone else other than to say "They're Yello".
File under.ELECTRO FUNK.A lot of HIP HOP/ELECTRO artists.Owe there hits thanks to the beats Yello.Came out with in the early 80's.ps.Give Yello Live At The Roxy (Full Version).A listen & you will hear for yourself.
And that's why I love em? And still do, since early 80s....I mimic main sound from The Race for the uninitiated and they go..' oh I know them'. Suits me fine
I remember listening to their music and thinking it sounds like the lyrics were written by millionaire playboys, and then finding out that Deiter Meier is, in fact, a millionaire playboy. 😅 Yello is so underrated. Love all their albums.
It carries a message, for those eager to learn. It's about materialism (greed and fear). |t's what drives the World's financial markets. It's not really what us humans should be about. The value of our lives cannot be measured in dollars (or gold).
Yeah man Stranger Things. Though I thought they got the years wrong. Goldrush was from 1987, whilst S3 of Stranger Things is 1985. Still a brilliant song though.
If that's the case, you really should take a deep dive into the 80s. Not the mainstream, but all the various kinds of new, exciting, spectacular and experimental musical styles that flourished during that decade. Yello was only one out of many creative and innovative groups...
My best friend sent me this when my mom passed away, I was so angry with life. 1990. I "learned" to love this song. Bang it with headphones, you will too. He passed away one month later, his mom I loved dearly. She passed away today, I promised him I would see her through. 30 yrs later...I have. Louise.. love you always and forever. You are Gold.
Tami, I'm documenting my associations with color and musical notes. This song based of E major, which I see as, believe it or not: Yellow. But that's not even the point I was going to make. E major is a key of illumination. I see it as triangular as well. So it's very like the Holy Trinity. Not to mention yellow as being associated with the light of Christ. So, basically I feel this key is about consciousness. So, it's sort of a "waking up to reality," E-flat, a golden-yellow, (Gold Rush?) has a smiler effect as well. Just saying that there the key of the song does seem to relate to your experience.
Every time I see an old Yello song or video I remember meeting Dieter Meier 1989 in their studio at home. It was a fantastic visit and it's still in my mind as it was yesterday...! They were miles away from mainstream with their music and they stillare.

Everybody's here talkin' about Stranger Things. I thought there would be at least someone mentioning Cappella and how they sampled this song in one of their earlier big hits, 'Helyom Halib'
*TODDFTHER* "Toddfather?" "Oh! SrCeW tODd StEVe's HeR DaDdY now" "Did you just talk about yorself in third person?" "Did you just call yourself daddy?!"
The OOoohhh! -ooh ooohh!! is sung by the Great Billy MacKenzie of the Scottish band 'The Associates' Billy collaborated with yello in many things... writing the lyrics for the Shirley Bassey song The Rhythm devine :)
I'd only heard the song once when I was very young, but it had haunted me for decades. All I remembered was that it was hypnotic electronic music to which a near-naked juggler danced on Le plus grand cabaret du monde, a French TV show. Today, in ten minutes, I was able to exorcise that memory and find that song again, thanks to the technologies of AI, search engines and RU-vid. So it was a Viktor Kee show in the year 2000. It's hard to describe, but I'd say I'm as satisfied as I am happy right now.
Same here! I love the calypso rhythm of the acapella, bongos, monkey sounds, and muted trumpet! 🐒🎺 I only discovered Yello in 2023 thanks to looking up Oh Yeah since I remember hearing and liking ithe song from Duff Man's scenes in The Simpsons though 🍺💛
I think I’ve got away from Yello, then I’ll stick some headphones on, play a song of theirs, and I’m back in my 80s bedsit, chilling with my head between the speakers of my ghetto blaster, hands dancing on the bed, pillow behind my neck so as not to squash the Mohawk, getting in the zone for a good night out with the boys. *_Sigh_* getting old is shit.
Magic band. Funky. Quintessential new wave. Artistic covers, very Francis Bacon. “Oh yeah,” might be the movie tune, but I foam to my kids (9-12) re: VICIOUS GAMES (I never knew, how much I loved you, I never knew, how much you cared). That’s their magnificent, beautiful song. This one’s just for me. It’s like, “LET’S GET IT!”
Welcome all from hearing this on stranger things. I’m glad they are getting more recognition and more people are hearing their stuff. Yet to see that season myself
