Yellow-crowned Night Herons, seen close up, are luscious beauties. They're even pretty (and more fun to watch) when they've got a fish stuck crosswise in their beak.

That is a compliment worth savoring, Sanomia. Thank you. (I need to consult with you when I'm writing scripts--you with your way with words. 😏) I just posted a movie about why bees bumble around in flight, and if you haven't seen it, I do believe you'd appreciate the bite-size pieces of knowledge and the script packed with fun metaphors. Thanks again for the generous praise.

They're such beautiful birds!! I feel so lucky to see them reasonably often here on the Central Florida coast.

You folks in Florida get all kinds of tropical treats that the rest of us miss. That's why I like to vacation on Sanibel and visit Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuse. My two favorite movies from those trips are about the Reddish Egret and the Wood Stork.

I see these birds a lot while in Jamaica. I see them a lot at night also, this much be why they are called Night Herons.

Yes, that is the reason these birds are called Night Herons. I also did a movie about the Black-crowned Night Heron, another bird you probably see in Jamaica.

Rose, I filmed the close up shots for this movie on Sanibel Island in Florida. The wildlife there is misnamed. It's barely wild. The animals won't let you pet them, but they will tolerate you coming close. Once I got footage that showed the Yellow-crown's lush plumage, I wanted to make sure that other people focused on its beauty. And it pleases me no end when you tell me that I not only succeeded at that, but that I also amused you--always a goal of mine. Thanks for your comment.

Excellent - well-paced, funny and informative narration! Great Job Jo.
@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME
@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME 8 лет назад
"Well paced" is an especially welcome compliment on this film, waywardmuse. It took the heron five minutes to get that fish positioned just so before he swallowed it. I started by including close to two minutes of that, but I had to shake my finger in my own face and lecture myself to delete nice footage--to keep the film moving. Thanks for commenting.

Thanks for the praise, Fran. And I'm with you: I"d love to make a film of the YCNH's breeding display. But these birds are not all that common in Missouri; I got most of the footage for this movie in Florida. Maybe one of these days when we're traveling, I'll get lucky enough to film the display.

The tree next to my apartment here in PA has a breeding pair of yellow crowned herons. I moved in in January, I’m excited to see them show up. Apparently they’re pretty messy though 🤧

I live in Clearwater fl. Every now and then I see one of those walking around the neighborhood after dark. Is he ok?? Is he blind. It reminds me of a drunk bird who forgot to go home on time. I live 3 miles from bay etc and my house is on a creek of that house. Clearwater is near water all around. Thanks
@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME
@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME 10 месяцев назад
I'm no expert on YCNHs, but I do know that they're called night herons because their favorite times to hunt are around dawn and dusk. I've had little chance to watch them walking when they're not in the water, so I can't help you with the "drunk who forgot to go home on time" question--though I did enjoy the description. I can only say that you're privileged to have them so close to home. Enjoy.

Thank you for this! There are a pair of these in my neighbors tree in Houston TX. I wasn't sure what kind of bird they were, thought they looked like a Heron but in the city?

@@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME they had three babies! I haven't seen all five of them recently and wonder if they flew off leaving one behind and why that would happen. It makes me sad.

@@YourMissMarianne Hearing from my viewers and responding to their comments is a pleasure. Unfortunately I must forgo answering comments for awhile because the rotator cuff tear in my left arm is healing slowly, and I just learned that I have carpal tunnel syndrome in my right arm. I seem to have a body made out of spare parts- made on the cheap in China. So I won’t be answering comments before the beginning of August, if then. But if there’s something you’d like to tell me, please do so. I’ll be interested in what you have to say. It’s just that you’ll have to guess at what I would have answered. @@YourMissMarianne I follow a family nearby in Houston, too! They come to my yard for water and the babies pick at the sticks and snails. When their old nest trees were cut down I cried but they've come back and still stay close. They're so beautiful to watch 🥰
