I feel the same way, honestly. One of the pieces of jewelry that I wear daily is an unplated ring that looks decidedly off-white in the right light. To me, though, that just adds to its appeal. I can't imagine a context where "it looks like it's made of literal gold" is a bug rather than a feature. In general, I just don't *get* plating precious metals. They all look nice.
@@NyanCatHerder You actually sound like one of the smartest ones in here, people are like zombies! I concur, no precious metal should be plated w/another...I go a step further, I believe in only wearing 18K to 24K Golden coloured Gold, and .9999 Platinum jewelry, keep metals pure..
I was in a jewellers one time and the resident ‘expert’ was telling me how white gold is simply rhodium plated yellow gold. Needless to say I headed for the door. Some jewellers are clueless and it’s so refreshing to see someone who knows their stuff! :)
I think he meant something different. A lot of mass producing jewelry companies, mostly from Turkey and China, use yellow gold for its better casting and stamping abilities and slightly lower price, then using rhodium plating for achieving white color, mostly Chines companies even using thick silver coating before rhodium plating, so it will take longer to see yellow gold. My point is, most of resellers are buying from those companies and it is common they will sell you a rhodium plated yellow gold, they might not even know it is yellow gold.
@@TheWinkick Thank you for this. It’s very interesting but I don’t think it applies to the jewellers I was in. They were supposedly ’high end’ and saying it applied to all WG produced. I’ve got a ton of stories when it comes to jewellers. Another is when I asked to see if they had any aquamarines and they wordlessly gave me lapis, or when another was trying to sell me a huge pink CZ stating it was a sapphire. I also used to work as a jeweller and my boss had no idea about a lot of things and would feed rubbish to the customers to try and sound good. It just really grates on me since customers look to jewellers for expert knowledge when sometimes all the jeweller cares about is selling, or just don’t know much beyond the very basics and don’t care to learn. Anyway,, sorry to waffle! 😂
Unfortunately he was correct. The introduction of white metals such as palladium or nickel and silver give gold a pale yellow colour which needs to be plated wirh Rhodium to make it white. I have looked at a recent spec. sheet for a white gold alloy and the range is from 53% palladium to 47% gold to 53% palladium,16% silver and 31%gold. These alloys look white but as you can see the trade off is less actual gold. The trend is more for White gold these days, but as my daughter and wife will tell you. It soon turns back to gold if indeed it is made of gold.....which is yellow.
@@nickreeder2979 there’s many stages in creating jewelry, one person doesn’t typically do everything from start to finish. A caster casts a setter sets etc.
That is the dumbest reason I've ever heard....damnz!! if you're living in that kind of neighborhood.. then just don't wear ANYTHING, or get a nice seXxy Hand-cannon, baby! (',
Don't be cheap with watered-down gold, keep Gold Golden.....then get pure Platinum if you want white metal! Mene jewelry is where I get pure, not junk metal....
Nickle is often added to gold to make white gold. That is why some people have an allergic reaction when they wear white gold they are allergic to the nickel in white gold.
@@Kelly-pp1et most countries adopted palladium a long time ago for the very reason that nickle is toxic....dunno where you're from but the only nickle white gold alloys would be, would be in pieces pre 1970 or so.
@@Kelly-pp1et not sure what alloy of 14ct you're explaining, but palladium doesn't make up the full balance of your alloying properties...and you're right it is expensive...at the cost of not being toxic or being horribly brittle, or age hardening to the point of fracturing or metal fatigue...i've never used a nickle based white gold and never will 😉
@@bernardblack6997 nickel and zinc are still the most widely used in the world palladium is too expensive for this to be economically feasible. Honestly you've probably used a nickel alloyed gold and never even realized it
@@calebwiggins3042 again, dunno what part of the world you're in but here in Australia, it's industry standard to use palladium in all white gold alloys. I've been a manufacturing jeweller for close to 20 years and have never used anything else. not sure what countries consider a toxic metal to be standard but its definately not something used here.
I love your video dude. Now i know how to compare between platinum vs white gold. Thsnks you so much to share with us. Looking forward of the next video
Gold, also called golden, is a yellow-orange color which is a representation of the color of the element gold. The web color gold (also referred to as orange-yellow) is sometimes referred to as golden to distinguish it from the color metallic gold.
Thank you for this video! Excellent presentation! 💯 I have to wear yellow, white gold or Platinum. Very sensitive skin, but I love them all three very much! 💞💯 Would love to see more videos and what you all have to offer!! Sincerely, Jen 🎊💞✨🎶🎉💖✨🎈💯🎊
I never liked that a pure 75% gold alloy got coated with another metal. It kinda defuses the prupose of gold, being made of gold becomes pure status in the end. I wonder if you can order jewelry from white gold without the coating.
I'm working for more than 25 years in the precious metals branch. I haven't seen a 18ct white gold with a palladium content of 25%. It would be too expensive. Normally they are using silver, tin and 10 till 16% from Palladium.
Have a 0.5 oz 24k wedding band with overlapped, not connected ends. Love the satin finish. Pure gold jewelry is common in India and Asia. Very hard to find in USA.
So? Let me rephrase, solid gold above 18K so 21/22/24K is hard to find in the western world (im from Europe same story) asia and africa and the middle east do have plenty gold jewelry any carat.
My first wedding ring set was a hand-me-down (broke college students) in white gold. I got so sick of everyone asking me why I had silver ring. When we upgraded the set, the new one was in yellow gold.
Did you know the silver fillings everyone has are made of mercury zinc silver tin and copper, that's alot of metal in a tiny spot. I loved working with it in dentistry it's so interesting and so soft before it cures
Yeah I don't get the point of white gold when you have to keep replating it with rhodium to keep the white color when you can just wear silver or platinum since people are going to assume that your jewelry is one of the two anyway and they're both naturally white. Plus if I'm paying good money for something solid gold, I want it to look like gold.
@@jennifermccarthy8493 hey, thanks for the replay. But why gold and not silver then? I'm also cool toned and I wear silver (and have a nice collection :D)
@@AnneKyfee oh I still love and buy silver don't get me wrong but I suppose as I have gotten older I have started to incorporate some more white gold in for special pieces that I invested more money into and want to have for a very long time ...more valuable i suppose and i will pass down to my kids. I will buy white gold when I want to buy a special fine jewellery piece and then silver for more costume jewelry style and demi jewellery
No one alloys with brass. One would have no control over color. Brass is a mixture of copper and zinc. 18k yellow gold has copper and silver added in equal (12.5%) proportions generally
✨ one plus : Thanku you for this vido ! Excellent presentation 💯 I have to wear yeallow , white gold or platinum. Very sensitive skin , cut . 💕 would love to see more videos and what you all have to offer !! Sincerely.
Well the main difference is...if you think you're too good for silver..and you want that color..you're better off with platinum. No offense to anyone. I think I'm too good for fake jewelry so...I can be a snob too.
Always love your tutorials could you maybe do something with Rose Gold, it's getting very popular with Watches. I'm looking at a Breitling Super Ocean Heritage that uses a Rose Gold Bezel would love to know a bit more about it.
Ah yes I'd like to look at rose gold as a WATCH metal, especially because there are so many brands that adopt rose gold. Robert, we've got an unboxing video of the Bremont Argonaut coming soon, will you be watching that? - George
I love white gold my 1/4 ct diamond studs are in 14k white gold plus it's a lot stronger then 14 k yellow gold but when.it comes to rings 10k gold is a lot better in a ring it is tougher and the price of gold went up today to $2000 an ounce that is crazy the price of gold will go up even more just wait and see up the irons maiden manic🇬🇧🤘🤘🤟🤟🎸🎸
I wear a 22 kt earring .I usually make .925 or .999 silver rings or whatever my customer wants. I prefer yellow gold. What is the compostion of 22 kt gold ?
Pure Solid White Gold Formula it's life time Guaranties, for the next 5 years stable world market price, strong better that yellow gold and rhodium plate our palladium mix yellow gold metal.
BRO THANK FOR URE AMAZING VIDEO BUT A QUESTION CAN I GET A RING WITH COPPER,GOLD,PLATINUM,SLIVER,RED DIAMOND IF POSSIBLE BRASS TOO MIX ALLOY OF THIS AT WHICH PRICE U SOLD IT TO US VIEWERS? OR IS IT POSSIBLE? JUST CURIOUS THATS ALL SORRY IF OVER SAID BUT STAY HEALTHY BE BLESSED AND GET VACCINATED GUYS MAY GOD HELP US ALL!
Seems rather silly to me that people rhodium plate white gold and platinum when rhodium over silver could be used. What a waste of money as no one will ever know what's under the rhodium. Freshly polished silver IMO looks a heck of a lot like rhodium. As a lover of rhodium, but not of having to get get rings plated constantly, I've simply switched to wearing silver. Honestly, the average person would have no idea if it's silver, platinum or rhodium anyway (not that I care that others know what I'm wearing, but it's interesting nonetheless).
Excuse me sir... can make yellow gold the white gold? I have a ring here white gold... so I want to make this yellow gold... to melt this... I hope we can make... thank you for your answer...
I wonder if the Rhodium plating on white gold can cause skin irritation? My wife’s wedding ring and engagement ring started causing a rash on her finger but it wasn’t until she had been wearing them for seven years.
how many karat is your ring 14k / 18k? do you wear it in the shower? does it slip off? is it still shiny these days? im just curious. thanks in advance!
@@isabellaquijano5617 my wife hasn’t had the rash in a while but I’m not sure of the karats on hers. My wedding ring is 14K yellow gold and I wear it in the shower and everywhere else. Mine gets a little scuffed up and dirty from working in it but a little bit of metal polish shines it back up pretty nice, it brings back the shine on my wife’s white gold ring too.
I love yellow gold. Looks better on my skin tone. But while shopping for engagement and wedding rings it was EXCEPTIONALLY hard to find one I liked in a yellow gold setting smh they were all white or platinum. My fiance had to order mine custom smh
Hey Jacocje sells some 22k gold. He has a RU-vid channel. Only recommending him because he seems legit and fair enough prices and I think businesses like his should get recognition.
I just bought my granddaughter a white gold necklace, I thought it was silver, she said no it's white gold.............. I'm not into jewelry, so I never heard of white gold lol...........
Haha. You wasted some money. I'm just kidding. I mean..I buy silver and yellow gold..and don't bother with white gold. But she probably likes it better cause it's more expensive. I am sure you are on her good side for a long time.
@@sweexie2057 You have to replate it which costs a lot more than taking some baking soda and boiling water and throwing your jewelry in it. So what now?
Hello, I’m looking for advise on how to change a white gold Diana style ring into yellow gold, would this be an straight forward job ? And is it worth doing as I feel yellow gold looks better than white gold
I feel like this job would be difficult because you would have to essentially change the entire composition of the band. In other words, the ring would have to be recreated with yellow gold alloy to identically match the current ring. You could look into plating the white gold with yellow gold plating, but that would have the issue of it fading off.
Has your white gold turned to yellow? I.e. was it ordinary yellow gold and Rhodium plated.? Most white gold rings are made this way. I have bought a plating kit to keep my daughter's white gold wedding band white when it fades back to yellow.
they can also heat treat it or chemically change the white to yellow just like lab created gemstones they can resurface gold. my name ring was white gold on the bottom back in 94 . over the years into the millenium it faded in the corners and the jewelry shop resurfaced and made the whole ring back into yellow in 2008 i liked it better the second time and they made look like new i was in tears . so yes it can be done.
