Yep, kinda sneaks up on me. I can tell the difference between something that is really moving, and something that a group thinks is going to be moving. Miles was that way. He didn't play stuff because it was supposed to move you. It did move you. A composition can be like a house built with quality workmanship. Some stuff is like a thrown-together apartment building designed to bring in the rent. This is quality construction.
The man's a genius. Listen to the original studio recorded version of the track from "The Spin", and compare to this and the version from "Live Wires". Chalk and cheeze. The original saxophonist was Mark Russo, an excellent technician, but possibly not a true jazz man. That version did nothing for me. Live Wires saw Bob's introduction to the band, and with that performance he tranformed it to one of my all-time favourites..
A classic. I know you don't look at these Russell, but I've been looking at transcriptions of your intros and piano parts here on RU-vid and most of them are so close to right Just a note here or there not quite making it. And many of them are acceptable substitutes for your notes, but they're not your notes :)
