What an unbelievable concert with the classic Yellowjackets lineup of Russell Ferrante, Jimmy Halip, William Kennedy and Marc Russo at the top of their game delivering quite possibly their greatest music ever. It doesn't get any better than this. I love it!
Most of us, i would imagine, have loved these guys for so long. Hearing this early music of theirs just delights me.... It is so melodic and accessible and skillful and joyous! Dang-They sound GREAT!
Jimmy's solo on "One Family" is so stunningly well placed! It doesn't struggle against the intent of the song, it actually helps the song make a statement that would have been lost without its inclusion. This is genius!
Im a musician from South Africa and i have listened to a lot of live shows on youtube, but this one had me to tears. To me personally this is the best I've ever seen from the YJ. And it's the 1st time watching this performance. Thank you so much for uploading this video.
I saw these guys in Merriville Indiana at the Star Plaza in the 80's. I was on the edge of my seat on every song. Incredible concert! Mark Russo is a beast!
the best band , jazz band ! of all times ! man marc russo is a god of alto sax ! and kennedy ans haslip and ferrante ...i never go back on earth since lol !
I could cry when I hear older Jackets with Marc on horn.... NO COMPARISON....Mintier was a long time label mate buried.....like a water boy.. He made his connections to allow him to help get gigs overseas for years. ..gigs equal concert money. It also contributed to Jimmy leaving, too much travel, lower music quality.
This is some killer stuff the guys are on top of their game!! The most iconic line up of the band here i love it and i can't get enough of Marc Russo's alto sax. It got me hooked immediately the first time i heard it.
Jimmy Haslip did a beautiful solo ,very melodic " playing a story" as Miles Davis used to said " you play can 400 notes , you just need to play the right notes""
Yea mate one of my favorites, the sax and the bass ... I always crank up the volume. It is an amazing ballad. I cannot describe it in words. It blows my mind every time I hear it.
I was 20 when I discover this amazing band.. I since listen to them now. Just to say that Marc Russo is really a great sax player, too underrated.. With a tone, a personnality and a "groovy" vocabulary. Thanks a lot for this rare footage.
Are you kidding? Who underrates Marc Russo? He is one the most respected alto saxophone players with his untouchable altissimo ranges, musicality and crazy chops in the music business.
Same! Would love to get my hands on it now. Do you have any info about it? All I know is that my folks taped it & various other artists from a Montreux special from ABC or SBS in early 90's (I'm in Australia) So many memories!
I wonder if the Jackets were digging the Zawinul Syndicate and vice-versa back in the late 80's. Shorter and Russo have some commonalities as does the keys. Austrian-California World Beat.
I don't care who you are, I don't mind your good looks or your pot belly, the Yellowjackets are a godsend, Marc Russo or Bob Mintzer I don't mind either, if it weren't for them I wouldn't be here probably, they are always at that last boulder where I stand and think aloud "I will prevail" no matter the situation
