These are the motion sensor lights I used to keep the bears away this year. amzn.to/36FshnL I think I chose these particular ones for a combination of distance sensitivity of the sensors and price, but there are lots of options available. They are solar powered and very bright. There are multiple settings, one that just stays on and one that comes on for about 15 seconds when the motion sensor is tripped, and then shuts off.

That has to be so satisfying, to get good results after so long. And it surely must be devastating to find a tree demolished. Ugh. I can't imagine.

Well, it's a good lesson in acceptance lol. But yeah, the first time the bears wrecked that nice Yarlington Mill tree, it was pretty disappointing. a year latter, I lost 6 , 7 year old trees in one night to a bear snapping the tops off. most never recovered well.

I got a hold of some golden russets about 8 yrs ago in Boulder, I bought two bags even being pricey, my favorite apple hands down, phenomenal taste when they are right and I think they are gorgeous and rustic, edible art , that complex great flavor indicates great nutrition also. My second closest is Opal yellow, found in Natural grocers, organic and superb for store bought. I have two golden russet trees, hopefully soon I will get a decent specimen to try. I agree most every home orchard in the north should have this classic apple. Excellent informative videos.

I feel your pain with the bear damage. Between them and beavers I've lost many trees. I live between Blodgett and Burtwoods OR and this fall I had an ODFW approved trapper come out. He snared 2 big boars 3 days apart then pulled his snares. 5 days later we had another big bear on the property as well a couple smaller ones. We did have a nice surprise this fall. While walking our place I found a wild tree that had lightly russet apples that on first taste reminded me of sweet lemonade. It's a wild tree so I have no idea what it would be. Gonna try find if anyone is interested in it enough to propagate it. I may be interested in buying a small handful of Golden Russet scions. And what is your opinion on the Hidden Rose apple if you've tasted it. I'm looking for scion wood of that as well.

"Will this live up to my own hype?" - always good to laugh at ourselves. I've not had wonderful experience with Golden Russet, yet. When I began growing fruit trees Ashmead's was disappointing in every way except the taste of the couple fruits it produced. I now have Rosemary Russet in the ground & there appear to be many blossom buds on it for next year - its first bloom. If the fruit compares at all favorably to Ashmead's I will be quite content. RR has many things going for it, including nice crotch angles and scaffold spacing with little help from me (like Gold Rush in that respect, from which we enjoyed our first samples this year).

I have something labelled as rosemary russet, but it never was very good. I think I grafted a new one last year, so we'll see. Ashmeads around here seems to do well over all, better and more reliable than Golden Russet in terms of production and culture. You might try roxbury if you can find it.

I have a golden russet tree that I bought from St. Lawrence nursery in 2013 (Antonovka rootstock). It is a gorgeous tree and the apples are our favorite of the varieties we grow so far. It seems to ripen over a long period Sept- oct. I am curious which of the russets it is. It looks a little bit more golden than yours? I bought a piece of scionwood from Fedco this year and want to compare to see if it is the same. Their description led me to believe theirs may be a later ripening variety than the one I have. That is disappointing that it is your favorite russet, I have some other russet grafts in the works and I was hoping that they would be as equally amazing as my golden russet 😅. Thanks for your videos!! 😊
@SkillCult

A common variety is the bullocks pippin, aka american golden russet. You can tell by the growth habits of the tree if it is the one I am eating here. It will tend to be lanky, with long sections of wood that don't have side branches. It also bears quite a bit on the tips. It is hard to train or figure out how to prune.
@amandaisoutdoors
@amandaisoutdoors 3 месяца назад
@@SkillCult I just looked back at my notes and from their (st. Lawrence) description they said it was English russet seedling parentage....it is lanky but I also haven't pruned much because I wasn't sure how to approach pruning of tip bearing trees 😆. The Fedco scionwood I got this year said the golden russet is of uncertain parentage but possibly English, New York or New England 🤷. I guess it will be a few years before I can compare, but I'm definitely going to graft some more trees from scionwood from the one I have! Lol.

One of the few things that makes me excited about GMO is taking high eating quality fruit and vegetable varieties and upgrading them with disease resistance and other characteristics that make them easier to grow and ship.
@SkillCult
@SkillCult 3 года назад
GMO has a lot of potential to make genetics a super fun and useful playground, but I'm against it for the most part and certainly in apples. Once they are out, it makes it impossible to make informed choices if people don't want to eat them, and the genes can then cross out all over the place. I saw a talk by the breeder at geneva who said she thought people should have a choice on whether they eat GMO's, but that's just naive or bs. Once they are out, there's no real control and the genes can contaminate the rest of the gene pool. Other genetic tools are accelerating natural sexual reproductive breeding greatly. Ridiculously, the first GMO apple is just to prevent browning so unfresh food looks fresher.
@manatoa1
@manatoa1 3 года назад
@@SkillCult just to be clear, I'm not talking about transgenic GMO, just taking genes from one apple and plugging them into another apple. Not taking genes from a fish and putting them into an apple. When it comes to transgenics, I'm on the same page as you. Using our knowledge of genomics to guide breeding is awesome, but you can't make a disease resistant Cox's Orange Pippin that way. You can only make something kind of similar to Cox with greater resistance. I want new awesome apples and old awesome apples.
@Hayley-sl9lm
@Hayley-sl9lm 3 года назад
@@SkillCult We need transparency and ethical regulation of GMOs, for sure. But since we all know that that's not going to happen, I feel like the answer needs to be open-source protocols for smaller operations and home growers to have some of these same powerful tools that used to be only available to huge companies with fancy labs. If it's going to be a wild west of playing god, I want people who are truly passionate about apples and people who care about the environment making the GMOs.
@SkillCult
@SkillCult 3 года назад
@@manatoa1 Oh, I didn't know that was possible. I was under the impression that it required other organisms in order to get the genes in there. I might just be behind the curve on what's up with genetic modification now.
@manatoa1
@manatoa1 3 года назад
@@SkillCultthere's a number of different types of GMO. Transgenic is transferring genes between unlike species, and cisgenic is transferring genes between like species. It's the cisgenic, that I'm at least cautiously in favour of. You don't necessarily even need to transfer genes at all, but just activate or deactivate genes within the organism's own genome. The non-browning apple is an example of deactivating the gene that produces the enzyme for browning. I think cisgenic GMO is fairly recent, which seems like the opposite of what you'd expect.

I don't think you will find that to be true. Russet isn't a variety, it's a trait that presents more or less. There are lots of russets with lots of different parents.
