Even as an adult, seeing Johnny 5 get beat to death while he pleads for his life is genuinely disturbing and heartbreaking!

That Mister Rogers Neighborhood moment brings me so much joy! I grew up watching that show, and seeing J5 watch my childhood, (basically my childhood watching my childhood) is so precious!💖💖💖 and hearing the theme song play in the background as J5 discovers that he’s in a city, and the piano swelling up as he finally looks outside is just magical! (Even though in the context of the movie, this is a big oopsie! 😅)

Fun Fact in case you didn't know. Tim Blaney who voiced Johnny Five in both Short Circuit films also was a puppeteer for the first Short Circuit. He controled the head and neck in the first film and also voiced Number 5 on set while filming. At one point they thougjt replacing the onset voice with another voice. But the cast and crew got so use to hearing Tim Blaney as Number 5 that they said, no that is Number 5. So they kept him as the voice. For Short Circuit 2, they had different puppeteers for Johnny Five and one of the puppeteers Robert Mills who controlled Johnny's head did the voice for Johnny on set for filming. The director for Short Circuit 2 wanted to keep Robert Mills as the voice for Johnny Five. But the producers wanted Tim Blaney to come back and do the voice again. So Tim Blaney was brought back and recorded Johnny's voice after they filmed. Tim Blaney recorded his lines while watching the scenes. Unfortunately Tim Blaney was never on set for the second film, only the first one he was.

It does. The puppeteer performance work is amazing. The animatronics are amazing and holds up well to this day. Johnny Five really looks alive on screen. Plus, I give props to Tim Blaney who voiced Johnny Five. His vocal performance sells it in every scene. Including when Johnny gets beaten. Tim Blaney's vocal performance for that scene really sells the emotion of it. Which I got to tell that to Tim Blaney himself the other day. He told me as he watched that scene in the studio when he recorded it, it was heart breaking to watch which made the emotion of what was happening come to him easier. He also told me this, that Johnny is begging for his life, the audience knows he's alive but the bad guys don't which makes me that much more emotional which is what Tim Blaney held onto as he recorded his voice for that scene.

Then going to see this second movie and we watched Johnny 5 get smashed into bits. That's hard for a 10 year old to watch. Even now, as I' watching this and hearing Johnny 5 begging for his life...

The scene with Johnny feeding him lines on the date is taken from a very old play from the 1890s based on Cyrano De Bergerac.

I loved this movie and the first one since tbey came out when I was a kid. I still love these movies. Short Circuit 2 is good snd they took chanced with it, which I think worked well. They definitely play on your emotions. You really feel for Johnny snd everything he goes through. Just the other day, I actually talked to the guy who voiced Johnny 5 in Short Circuit 1 and Short Circuit 2 about the scene where they beat up Johnny Five who is Tim Blaney. Tim told me that he watched the scenes as he recorded his lines for Johnny and said that scene was heartbreaking which made it easier to pull the emotions for the vocal performance. He said, Johnny is begging for his life, the audience knows he's alive but the bad guys don't which makes it that much more heart wrenching to watch.

Thanks for reacting to this chunk of my childhood. Short Circuit and this sequel (+ C3PO & R2D2) is why I'm not worried about humans and sentient robots getting along just fine once tech is evolved enough. PS: I always see this movie as the "nice" version of the Terminator which was released the same year.

@21:30 : 2nd movie came out in 88, first one was 86, so 2 years?
@Cobalt-Jester
@Cobalt-Jester 4 месяца назад
If only the movie was made today... Back in the 80s the technology wasn't good enough to make a really good Johnny 5 toy. Making an RC Johnny 5, or just a semi decent battery powered model like they show in the movie would be like printing cash. The money would arrive in trucks every hour of every day. But it was the 80s and the tech wasn't small or good or cheap enough to make a toy Johnny 5. If the movie came out now then you'd be able to get a 12 inch Johnny 5 running on a rasperi Pi controlled by a smart phone or voice control. Even have it be your Alexa and it would be for sale under $100. In 1988 it would not do any of the good things. maybe it goes back and forward controlled by a joystick connected by a wire and it would cost $100 and no one is going to pay that when the Nintendo NES is in the shops for $100.
@trailersic
@trailersic Месяц назад
Na they definitely could have released those toys, they just didn't have the confidence. All the prototypes are right there. If they didn't included controls they could have made it cheap. Look up the Tomy Dingbot. which was available in 1988 for $10.
