This was from 1971. Yes have influenced so many bands, Rush in particular. Bill Bruford is a staggeringly good drummer. Chris Squire's bass playing is phenomenal. Steve Howe is one of the finest Rock guitarists, and Rick Wakeman and exceptional keyboard player. Jon Anderson's voice is uniquely beautiful. Close to the Edge is my all-time favourite song of all the hundreds and hundreds of albums and thousands of songs that I have in my music library.

This is a fine example of how Yes lay down several musical phrases that seem disparate at first but then get woven together, so by the end reprise it is seamless and beautiful.

Yes's musicianship is 2nd to none. In my opinion they have top 5 musicians playing the bass (Squire), guitar (Howe) and keyboards (Wakeman). Then Jon Anderson adds his angelic vocals which is like an instrument.

You're just scratching the surface of the greatness of YES. Keep them coming. They have many epic songs like this. "Awaken", "The Gates of Delirium", "Close to the Edge", "And You and I", "Turn of the Century", "Starship Trooper", "Perpetual Change", "The Revealing Science of God", lots more.

This song is sooo good!! The bass groove is insane, the opening riff!!! fire, the vocals are killer as well ... What Bruford does in that song gets studied by drummers these days. There are some videos on YT analyzing the grooves in this track and other legendary Bruford drum beats.... Thanks !!!!!

I love it when I see someone get floored by this band the same way I did back in the seventies. This was the first Yes track I ever heard, I was six in 1971, and HotS was played on a record player behind the bar at a club my mother worked at. I didn't know it was a record, I just heard the music coming out of the speakers and was captivated by the sound. For some unknown reason I never asked what it was, or could I own it, it was just some music playing in a bar. It took until 1979 for me to hear GftO, which was my gateway album. Suffice to say I was elated when I heard this track on the Fragile album, but I was pissed that I could've been into them eight years earlier.

JON Anderson was their lyricist, wrote most of the melodies and did some arrangements for Yes, throughout his tenure as their amazing lead singer- but as you explore Yes, you'll notice that every band member sang, and sang extremely well. If you think this performance by Jon was stellar (and it was, and he can still perform it in this key), you'll shit gold bricks when you hear Awaken. :)

I've seen interviews with wakeman where he said the first day he played with the other members they had worked out most of this song and roundabout. Pretty productive first day. Yes fired the previous keyboardist,, tony kaye, because he didn't want to play moog, mellotron, and the latest gadgets. Wakeman on the other hand loved all the new sounds and knew how to use them. This song to me sounds like Yes running around the playground letting wakeman use all his toys. It's quite creative and quite a journey. Shout out to Steve howe in the way he restrained his guitar playing by subtley fading in an out to the point where sometimes you could overlook the licks he was playing. Finally,, I don't know what chris squire had but in the intro where he plays the same four notes over and over and over was just downright nasty , nobody else sounded like that.. squire and buford at their best together.

A lot of bands are influenced by Yes, including Rush and Radiohead. The singer is Jon Anderson, not Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull), though they are distant relatives. If you want to hear Yes go heavy, Gates Of Delerium and Sound Chaser from the Relayer album is amazing, and the Drama album has a lot of heavy in it too.

I don't remember when I bought "Fragile" (on vinyl - I still have it), but it was among the first 10 albums I bought way back in the late 70s early 80s. I do remember that I bought "2112" before "Fragile".

Fantastic observation that its a piece of art. The band would agree. Subbed now that you've done three. Stay with the early albums first. They've got over ten symphonic masterpieces of 14mins plus. Enjoy the Yes ride, medication recommended. I've only seen Yes 36 times over forty yrs till Squire's passing. 🙏🍁

Oh man - if there are Zappa and Beefheart fans that are not Yes fans, I can't explain that. Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson are 2 of the biggest Yes fans there are. I'm a Rush, Yes, Zappa, Beefheart and a whole lot of other music fan. Yes is one of the first bands I got into in back in the 80s. They're classic rock and musical giants.

Great reaction. I would recommend going thru the rest of the songs on this album you haven't done yet and then go to The Yes Album. There are so many gems on that album....then hit the albums with the epics like Close to the Edge, Awaken, Gates of Delirium. Grow into YES the way we did as they released these albums and amazed us every time. Welcome to the greatest group of musician ever put together in one band.

If you think Zappa's drummers are intricate listen to mr. Bruford in King Crimson he is always somewhat restrained is Yes and he is not the type of guy to bash the drums so much anyway but he is one of the most talented no doubt. I grew up with the Beatles Zepplin,Floyd, yes and Rush wait I forgot Dylan and Neil young then as I got older I discovered Radiohead and countless punk, industrial and post punk bands but for the last 5-6 years Iv'e been on a Radiohead binge that hasn't gotten old yet a record I think.

Jon Anderson is the best. This was the song that got me into Yes. I went to a concert in the mid 80s and this was one of the songs. It introduced me to go back and find all the 70s progressive stuff and I've been hooked ever since. Attended concerts from 1986 ish to 2017--every tour. Hope you continue to listen to Yes and learn more about them. I think there are a lot of Yes fanatics out there.

Steve Howe (guitar) is one of the best rock guitarists ever and Rick Wakeman is a classical pianist they are all amazing, Wakeman had a great interview about newer music (at the time) and I remember one of Radioheads members said he hated prog and Rick said sorry skippy but you are prog and I remember Geddy Lee who picked OK Computer in his 10 desert island discs saying sorry but you are prog I love that debate.

This album, released in 1971, made it clear that YES were going to lead the way in the genre of progressive rock through the 70s. Their follow up to Fragile, 'Close to the Edge', was 5 master musicians taking prog-rock as far as it would ever go. None have ventured that far since except perhaps YES with their 'other' masterpiece, 'The 'Gates of Delerium' released in 1974. Check out those two if you are ready to go deep into YES.
