When my cousin first started Minecraft a year ago he would post a "help question" on reddit cuz he was learning. The mods deleted everything he posted. Everything. He emailed them about it, and they said "look up your questions on Google, you're wasting the moderators time." Now he can't post on r/Minecraft. The moderators need moderators.

They don't need "reforms" and "rule changes" They need to get NEW people on the team who ACTUALLY CARE

I've been banned on this subreddit for 7 years now. All because when I was a kid I made one minecraft animation and wanted to share it with the community and they said it's self promotion and banned me immediately.

This happens because every subreddit, across all of Reddit, eventually employs a series of "Supermods" that moderate dozens of subs at once. These "Supermods" not only tend to have very strong inclinations to specific views, they often are decisions on the fly, often to the detriment of the subs in question. Many a sub has been killed by "Supermods" going on powertrips and basically making all subs into _their_ subs.

I know it’s not important for me to say this but I’m normally pretty emotionally unavailable. I see and hear things that don’t affect me. But when I saw the user’s post and their memorial follow up I teared up. It was a beautiful way to honor their loved ones. I put myself in the position of them placing that last block and stepping back to view the finished product and felt just overwhelmingly emotional.

The first piece of reform they need to do is to get rid of the mod who said the single worst sentence I've seen all year. That person needs to disconnect and get some serious help if that's the first thing they think is happening with a memorial to a loved one.

I stopped using reddit a long time ago. Although there's a lot of good on that site and I've personally seen many cool creations and good things happen, the bad actors in the community ultimately ruined the experience for me, and watching a situation like this unfold is what keeps me from coming back. I genuinely feel so bad for B_freeoni and I hope wherever he is right now that thinks are going ok. If you ever read this or are someone in a similar situation reading this, I feel for you. All because of one moderator. But it's needed. Considering the controversy over the years in that sub-Reddit, a change is needed, but maybe a change of mindset too. This was bound to happen and thanks to big channels like you who pointed out the issue, it'll hopefully get that change. For better or for worst.

The fact they thought that a memorial post is done only for karma really shows that these mods themselves kare more about karma than memorials like this.

I looked at the subreddit after seeing the previous video before they made the edit to add the name. Everyone in the replies were furious and calling them out for essentially side-stepping what happened by not directly apologizing to him by name. I guess the pressure had an effect.

Honestly accusing of karma farming is kind of insensitive but they could have completely ignored this and could have said something like “i am so so sorry for your loss i hope you and her family members can get thru this. But unfortunately posting any form of memorials on this subreddit is a rule violation so i will remove this post soon. how people deal with grief in general is terrible. I've learned not to talk about it at all online to avoid accusations like that. if you're dealing with grief, I am very sorry. I'm right there with you.

This is why I prefer interacting with the community through youtube comments sections and on select creator's or dev's twitter accounts instead of entering the general community patforms. The minecraft community is just so widespread that you can't predict what kind of people are in or even manage these communities. All communities have bad eggs in them, made even more obvious when a community is so large such as that in minecraft and we really need to have more mature people behind those groups. So instead I prefer interacting with sub-communities where I know the people are far more palatable.

I knew you weren't, but it's the Internet where people will interpret what they will. Tbh i've had plenty of experiences and observations regarding mods. It's good to note that mods aren't some singular entity but a group (so when one mod says something insensitive and problematic, you can imagine how others might feel) so it kinda depends on how they handle this internally which, yeah that's something we might not have a clear lens into.

Hope the person who made that response loses their place in that subreddit and that no one else allows them in another one. Also the fact they only did anything after some big youtuber talked about it shows how much they care. But also please don't go mess with any of them, we don't need shitty consequences to actually nice people

Karma milking is a real issue on Reddit, but it's usually bots reposting old content in order to sell the accounts to advertisers. How the mods are handling this situation is completely and utterly unacceptable.

The subreddit needs a refresh on the moderators in general. A new set of staff (save the ones that actually value moderation over karma).

the fact that this is probably the 'official' subreddit, or at least the /r/url of being an official subreddit that most people will think of as the official subreddit, with this kind of moderation is absolutely wild. microsoft is a bajillion dollar corporation & this kind of stuff is a giant liability for them lmao.

The problem is that literally everybody on any platform get power hungry whenever they have any. Discord mods will act like gods because they can, Reddit mods delete stuff because they can. This needs to be changed

The mods fell into the "apology trap". Writing an apology only publicizes it further, and chances are that nobody will think your apology is legitimate. Bending over to popular requests may sound good, but people now know that you easily respond to criticism. Not only that, they didn't even remove the moderator responsible; that's easy ammo for people who are criticizing you to use. The correct course of action would have been not making an apology, and also removing the moderator in charge. It would have blown over. This, my friends, is how you don't get hated

“Reform needs to happen” No, Phx, a revolution followed by the minecraft community taking over that subreddit needs to happen. We need to literally reform the whole thing from who’s in charge of moderation to who decides which filters do what to what is allowed vs what should be discouraged vs what should warrant an insta-ban. As it stands now it’s utterly dysfunctional, more so than even Twitter which is saying something.

It's sad how much this kind of stuff happens all the time, not just on this subreddit. Just a month ago I joined a large discord server, who only had really vague rules. Nothing mentioned memes or swearing, so I ended up posting one. "Deleted" "What? I didn't think it was that bad?" "You're not allowed to argue about the rules." "Bro, I'm not arguing. I'm just asking a question." "Perma-banned. No appeal possible." I made a RU-vid video about the abuse of power. They got all mad because I made it, and argued I should delete it. Making a deal that if I did, they'd unban me. The mod in question ADMITS he only messaged me back because I managed to screen shot the conversation. Reddit and Discord can often be an modern example of the Stanford Prison experiments.

Yeah, there is a very fine line between accountability and harassment online. Yes, issues do need to be brought up and discussed so they can be resolved but there is a time and place for it. If issues are spammed or put way out of context then not only are they are more likely to be swept under the rug, those who bring up legitimate issues will be far more likely to be banned/ignored in the future for causing trouble/drama.

What needs to happen is ownership of the subreddit needs to be transferred over to mojang They can chose to keep the current mods or not, but Minecraft devs should have greater authority over the mods

Bear in mind if asking nicely is unsuccessful and boycotting is impractical then the only option for change is applying some pressure. A calm and civil approach should be first in most cases but i have seen way too many people stop there and never push any harder which is just as bad as not doing anything at all.

if i got a penny for everytime i have seen the mods of a subreddit doing something stupid and making people angry i'd have two pennies, but its weird that i have only seen it happen twice

I was a moderator of a very large reddit for years and I have banned countless people. I want you to know that I'd never ban you on the grounds that, even if you are promoting yourself, your content stands head & shoulders above very nearly everyone else. There are some that called me literally hitler. I know that you don't need me to say this but keep on doing what you are doing.

This is why reddit has a limit on how long it will be a thing, if you have problems with moderators on a subreddit, there is nothing that can be done unless the moderators choose to listen to you. This problem is compounded by the search for subreddits being absolutely awful and that the moderators often (almost always) prevent advertising other subreddits. Then you add in the idea of "official" subreddits and the subreddit being locked to a url so that there can't be another "/r/minecraft" unless the first one is deleted. ...Then you add in that the admins of reddit almost never do anything to handle out of control moderators unless the moderators have a specific political alignment... Just ditch reddit, `tis a silly place.

Props to you getting the issue noticed, handling it professionally, and addressing your viewers to make sure they don't act on your behalf inappropriately.
