Matte frame rider here: I use some clear sink/stovetop “caulk” tape from my local Daiso. Roughly $2 for enough to last many many trips. It it thicker so doesn’t look great, but it does the job well and peels off easy. 1,500~KM on my new gravel bike.. bumping and bashing around with a frame bag on all the time. Tape looks good, hasn’t worn through, and is cheap to replace as often as you want.
No matter how rough/smooth the bag/straps are it will either scratch or polish the surface. The material (even the dust going in between) is not your enemy, it is the movement. Don't believe any bag manufacturer's claim. There are only three solutions: 1) cover the frame so movement happens on a sacrificial surface 2) get a brushed titanium frame 3) don't care
Bonus bits of descent at the end of a vlog never fail to 1/ be a pleasant surprise (short memory), and 2/ put my heart in my mouth (two way steep roads with patchy maintenance) Thanks ROJ 🕶
I went to my local tint/audio car place and picked up some automotive paint protection film for free. Then headed over to Harbor Freight and picked up some "putty spreaders" for around $4 USD. I used the putty spreaders as a squeegee. I used the paper that came with some shimano component to cut templates, then transferred that to the protection film. Cleaned frame with isopropyl alcohol and applied film with soapy water spray. It's working well and my frame is a matte finish. I applied it to the underside of the downtube and wrapped both chainstays.
I have been using black self fusing tape for three years now on my black matt frame. It has no glue, it sticks to itself, lots of "meat" to wear out, seconds to remove it. Just wrap it around where the loops of bags touch. I only use bags when I am bike packing, so I remove them when I don't need them.
Another great Sunday morning, coffee and ROJ…but wait…something is missing. Learning a lot about frame tape application, but still, something is not right. Final word? … but the video is only half done? Could it be? Yes!!!! 7 minutes of descending bliss! Balance has been restored! Thanks for posting and, as always, the finest production quality I have found!
A few years back, got my matt blue bike completely wrapped by a professional. Still looks great and has protected the bike on and off road. No wear from bike bags or cables:) #Recommended
@@kargi42 Lol - forgot about that! Now I'm sad :,(( So, just like my carbon footprint, I now need to offset my bike 'wrap print' by shaving off some weight. I know, shaving my balls should do it :) #Baller
I just got a new frame and forks, warranty. First ride to make sure all was good. Wash frame, polish key areas then apply 2 coats of ceramic coating to the whole bike. Then apply small patches of plastic protection to help the more prone areas, under crown of front forks, under the top of the rear stays, under bottom bracket, underside of down tube plus a few other little bits. I can see mine but don't mind too much as I know that it's going a good job.
Thanks for the useful tip about a cheaper method for occasional taping of the frame. This is exactly what I needed for occasional use to carry extra camera gear. The road ride was beautiful, loved the golden hour light.
Great pov segment! It must have been a lot of work, editing out all the disc rubbing noise on such a long segment! ;) it sounds like my rim brakes bike! Kudo for that! The landscape looks great! Thanks for sharing your ride!
Great video, I use matt/satin clear tape from 3M. Its a bit thick and harder to make curve, but with the soap/water and a little heat or sunlight and it goes on great.
I have a matt black frame and I use black electical tape its a bit satin so it almost matches the frame, easy to apply and when you remove it there is almost no adhisive left on the frame. used it for the last 4 years on my 4 week bickpacking trips, on the steerer tube I put on some extra layers because the front bag move a bit more then frame/toptube bags
I have a Matt black bike. I just use Matt black vinyl wrap and I don't need to worry about removing it or anything. I just replace it once a month. And it's water proof as well
This type of tape, or even thicker varieties, are slightly porous and will leak air. So if you apply a piece of tape anywhere even without water, if the bubbles are not excessively big, they will disappear in a couple of days as the air leaks out. This is of course irrelevant in your case as you anyway remove the tape after every ride, but may be useful for someone who doesn't have the time to do it that often. Also, a normal hair dryer (not a hot air gun which could possibly damage something) usually softens the tape enough to make it stretchy and conform to bends in the frame. Just my two tips.
I use to do some descend from the Mountains in Gunma ken and the most I fear wasn't the curves but the little leaves in the route during this season coz as insignificant that they look can finish you at that speed ! Great bonus clip
Maybe there’s a 100M videos on the subject but I’ve never watched one and I’m interested in your take on it. Also knowing that you’ll do the subject matter justice and that you’ll do a 10x better job on it doesn’t hurt.
I love the frame 🔥, I respect how u love paying attention at details, but if it was me i would leave it without, I mean scratch make good memories lol 😂, I can tell u every moment in every scratch in my bike
Nice to see soap and water used these invisaframe pros using baby oil and water! Yeah wouldn't recommend that it'll leave colourful oil rings under the film I'd have thought on gloss type best with the old window tint technique like this here, always works perfect! Id use a hairdryer to get it into bends and get the backing adhesive recharged kinda thing it'll stick good
Literally just finished wrapping m,y brand new domane yesterday. I put it on every corner of the bike, I rather have clear film than scratches. Btw, most expensive sports cars get a paint protection film to keep it from getting rock chips. Most just do the front bumper and headlights but some go as far as wrapping the entire hood and lower part of the doors. Lastly, you should give ceramic coatings a try, I ceramic coat all by cars/bikes and all I need to wash them is a hose.
New viewer after @Trace Velo plugged you. Very informative but I liked the bonus clip most! Safa Brian-esque although next time you might want to do a few more runs!
Great content! As a non roadie I love your style and wit of your videos! (When will you do the obligatory Q&A? 100k?. Would love to know of your background/origin) - Peace from Austria
Cheers mate! I don’t really share anything outside of my “cycling life”. But I happily answer any questions you have regarding my cycling :) This channel is just a hobby, so sub celebrations and q&s’s don’t really interest me at all. Still appreciate everyone who spends tier valuable time watching my videos, if you get something useful out of it that’s way more important than sub and view numbers. Thanks again!
I would definitely going for the long term application, as the risk of harming the paint with the scissors or knifes through the ever repeating process of application is increasing a lot. Better to have a slightly visible permatent protection (which you can renew if needed) as having a permanent scratched frame because of one moment not paying too much attention on these various repeatings throughout the year.
I have a matte black anodised aluminium frame, shiny protective tape is veeery obvious on it. I just use black insulating tape under each bag strap. Very easy to apply and to peal off. I would probably use the same method for a painted frame, since the tape anyway only covers the immediate area of the straps.
great video! definitely going to give it another watch before I apply protection to my frame unrelated - what gloves do you use? I've been looking for a pair of more form-fitting long-fingered gloves and those look like they might fit the bill!
My best friend owns a car wrapping and windows tinting business. Came to his shop to buy left over scrapped clear bra from his customers’ cars. Instead of selling it to me, he wrapped the bike for free. The entire bike frame looked marvelous . Took his ass out to a strip joint to return the favor.
Man you would always trash me on descents. Just watching that I had a few oooh moments on the corners. A little bit of moisture or wet leaves and I am super nervous. Otherwise, your paint is gorgeous. You reminds and the new bike have made me want some sparkly tape after being Matt for years and years.
Great video. It's easier than I thought. I'm only planning on putting it on the underside of my downtube. BTW are you getting the FC-R9200-P crankset?!? Can't wait to see a review
Nice video. I like to recomend using paint protection film instead. It is a little more thicker and also the glue is way more safer when pulling out at the end of the day
I am going to be in Japan for a work related event. Do you have suggestions where I could get my hands on the 3M 331T tape in Osaka? Some chain of shops for example. Thanks a lot!
