Rotterdam 1977 was my first Yes concert. I’m a non-smoker and next to me sat a guy, enjoying one pleasure sigaret after another. I absolutely loved the show but, anyways…. ;)

As others mentioned, I definitely remember at the time that the mix wasn't optimal. Also recall seeing the "Yes in the Round" tour. Opening with "Parallels", this was the only time I saw them live that they didn't open with "Siberian Khatru".

I'm a big Yes fan but I haven't actually listened to Yesshows, so I am enjoying this trip with you.

This album was my first deep-dive into Yes. In 1984, after the 90125 songs, accompanied by the "old-Yes" that was getting played on the radio, I wanted to hear more. So, I bought the compilation "Classic Yes" and the live "Yesshows". I was 14 years old, and having never heard music like this before, I was just blown away. For weeks, before I saved enough money to buy these Yes albums, me and my friend would go to the record store and look at the cover art and just imagine what a song like "Gates Of Delirium" might possibly sound like. I was not disappointed.

Wow -- nice vinyl gifts! As others have mentioned it might be nice to open those up and show the insides on camera in case anyone else is considering picking them up. Re: the mix, I remember even back in 1981 thinking the mix was wonky, mainly the inconsistency from one song to the next. But I attributed that to the fact that these recordings were being pulled from different tours and venues, and I just figured it was the best they had to work with. The main problem with 'Yesshows' was even with a double vinyl set there was only much they could fit on it (and they still had to split "Ritual" into two parts), so all you're getting really is a sampling from 4 albums, one a double. It was partly those shortcomings that made the Yes live bootleg market so huge in the 70's and 80's. For example, I never saw Yes in the 70's and had no idea something like 'The Big Medley' even existed until I started hearing about it in context of bootlegs. That was only way a fan could hear that until it finally appeared on 'The Word Is Live' in 2005. BTW, the 'Hold Your Fire' sidebar was hilarious. 😆

Definitely sounds like it was mixed by the bass player. 😄 The show I saw in 1979 the opening orchestral piece was the them from Close Encounters of the Third Kind (which in the context of that year was totally awesome!) and then went into Siberian Khatru, not Parallels. I don't think I ever saw them perform Parallels live, which is a shame because I love the song.

YES! We are finally back to YES! 😁Thanks, JP! The song they always opened their concerts with wasn't "The Rite of Spring" but another Stravinsky song, "Firebird Suite". I love how it perfectly melds into "Parallels". Squire & White are in lockstep here. One of the greatest rhythm sections in the history, of Rock. I think this version of "Parallels" is an improvement over the original studio recording because I feel the church organ totally dominated the song, to the point where you could hear it on top of everything. Here Rick uses a synthesizer in its place and I think that just works better. Production wise, the bass and drums are dominant but I still feel the mix is better than on _Yessongs,_ which sounded kind of muddy. Excellent reaction. The next one, "Time And a Word" is also way better than the studio recording.

I've never heard a live Yes recording from their glory days, that I thought had great sound. Once you hit the the late 90s and into the 00s, you get some exceptional recordings that capture more of their live magic! It's sad when you hear recording like live at leeds that excellent, and wonder why Yes couldn't get it together. I will say, gates of delirium is the best sounding. Other than that, id much rather listen to keys to ascension!

I'm sorry but I think that this album is shite, and not a patch on Yessongs, which was amazing. My brother bought this album for me on my birthday back in 1980. I listened to it once and had to force myself to even do that. I still have it on vinyl, played only once, and ought to just sell it.

Your take on Hold Your Fire is troubling to me in that Hold Your Fire is my 2nd favorite album in all music history. 2nd only to Tales From Topographic Oceans. Of course I'm biased. I love every song on my favorite Rush album. Prime Mover is my least favorite, and it still is a great Rush song. Tormato isn't even in my top 50. But it's a good album. Just not great.

Funny you say "at least we have it" That's how I feel about Robert Johnson 78s...they sound like crap...but at least............. I think recordings should always be considered an "estimation" of the real sound...and what is the "real sound?" The muffled sound of the guitar you hear from backstage is just as "real" as the perfectly mixed sound of the guitar from the front row......its a subjective choice which one you use for the "definitive recording"

I remember being completely disappointed with the mix on this album when it came out. Sounded distant and tinny. Was a huge letdown after being weaned on Yessongs.
