So y'all mean to tell me in 2000 years nobody except for THIS MAN, could just say "hey, it's all about the soft palate, don't worry". I was literally starting to think I'm broken or something because that "keep your throat low/larynx low" or whatever they say... did NOTHING for me apart from making me feel pain. And here comes this man just explainnin it in the best way EVER?? OK, buddy... You've earned. I'm absolutely subscribing

I been tryna understand that concept since so many years, nasality different than pharyngal different than head... But you made it so clear and simple. Thank you so much

Got ya! ty .. So in order to sing higher we also need to strenthen the soft palate muscle so that it can resist more air flow just like the vocal cords? pls explain this one thanks

Pharyngeal is something you won't recognize until it appears. It likes to hide at first... Guy Babusek made a really good video about this on RU-vid. By itself, pharyngeal sounds nothing like twang or falsetto and it can be accessed with the nasal port either open or closed. It does not have to be nasal- it's behind the nose. The coolest thing about pharyngeal is that it allows you to switch to falsetto without changing timbre. This is precisely why pulling up chest is the wrong thing to do. Make your middle falsetto SOUND like chest and you won't have the pitch limitations chest has- or the strain and difficult dynamic control, frankly. One last thing: pharyngeal is forward, not backward! It's the most forward sound you can make. Most people haven't got it yet, because it takes years to develop and you can't fast-track the progress. Being the only thing that can unify the high and low range, pharyngeal is the mixing element of resonance and timbre and as such is the last piece of the full voice puzzle to fall into place.
@Morning404

How long do you think it takes to develop - will you start to see it emerge after 1 year of daily practice do you reckon?

@@into.the.wood.chipper. Wow, that's really interesting. I've heard pharyngeal voice being described as being incredibly easy to produce sound once developed - and it should be as easy as thinking a note and it coming out of you simultaneously with the onset of the breath... Is this true? I'm just starting my own journey with building the pharyngeal voice having previously been working with nothing more than a 'thinned out chest voice' where I blended my head and chest a little, but still used my throat and not my gut and lower back as the source of my power.
@into.the.wood.chipper.
@into.the.wood.chipper. 5 лет назад
@@Morning404 I'm not sure. Used to have a really easy time with high notes, and then struggled with them, somehow figured it out, then lost it again. That said, if you tend to talk a lot at your job, especially in customer service positions, anything that is NOT chest voice will benefit you greatly. I think falsetto and low whistle tones are very useful- they make the high range easier in general and contribute a great deal to vocal cord closure beyond the pitches where the way you do it for chest no longer works. Don't listen to anyone who thinks falsetto is not important. Ever great chesty singer I know claims not to have a falsetto, but they also can't sing above G4. Thinking only in terms of strengthening the bottom range is extremely limiting- because it is an overly heavy speaking voice that causes the voice to crack in the first place. The whole reason we need lessons (which, like it or not, are about 90% falsetto work).

Sorry but I have to fix you. Pharyngeal voice is not to send voice to nosal cavity but instead raise your soft palate and increase the resonance in your thoat+mouth and decrease nasal sound (try the sound "n" and see if you can make it pharyngeal, it will be hard because that sound force your sound to travel to your nose) You can have some nasality there but if its too much then you lose the pharyngeal voice. Bel canto use a lot of pharyngeal voice, and the typical way of bel canto singing is to raise your soft palate and let the sound travel through your thoat to your mouth instead of your nose. To make pharyngeal voice you need to squeeze the area in your thoat which is right above your voice box, so the sound in your thoat is more concentrated and make it sound like the resonance is mostly in your thoat.

What youre explaining seems so reasonable but it confuses me that opera singers are taught to raise the soft palate so that the voice can resonate in the head, so can you explain it to me?
@cwehden
@cwehden 6 лет назад
Opera what they are told and what the good ones do are often very far apart sadly. Best to just leave alone and let the vowels do the work Opera singers typically sing on pure vowels and very little pharnx resonance but sadly many take this concept way to far and end up sounding muddy and to dark, it's always a question of balance.

@buhnedej 5 лет назад
@@yasemindogan6329 go to a mirror, open your mouth and say or sing anything. You will see that everytime you phonate, soft palate goes up. The only time it doesnt go up is when you let air go in your nasal cavity and out through your nose (some consonants are nasal, like N or M). You wanna sing like that? Through your nose? Sound like Kermit the frog? Probably not. So yes, soft palate goes up and when u ascend in higher notes, it goes up even more. 95% of the resonance is in pharynx (only small part of nasal pharynx since soft palate closes it.) Here is a link of a great book, if you like to read: www.scribd.com/document/333780091/Douglas-Stanley-Your-Voice-Glossary-Entires-on-Registration Check this video, you can see quite clearly soft palate is up almost all the time: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2N5q85G3ydk.html
@Guilhermevphmay
@Guilhermevphmay 7 лет назад
You say it is influenced by the soft palate position, but isn´t it also a sound produced by constricting the pharyngeal wall too?
@cwehden
@cwehden 7 лет назад
there are other factors involved yes, it's always a combination of the larynx and articulation muscles interacting in some way to create a certain sound, for example the larynx is typically a bit lower for darker vowels. But at it's most basic level all pharyngeal voice really entails is keeping the soft palette low and letting the sound travel behind it into the head cavity which typically allows for easier access to head voice.

its so cool that i can hear your cords vibrating when you do the correct mum. I hear the MUM but i also hear this "micro" voice that is smooth as you go higher. I hear the same exact thing internally and it helps me figure out where my break is. I think your mic is just super good so it can some how pick up that sound. Do you know what i mean? its this mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm inside your mum that tells me you are doing it right. Do you understand what im saying 0-0 or am i crazy
@cwehden
@cwehden 7 лет назад
yes you are right, you can hear the split of resonance on the mum, many people miss it because they don't listen carefully enough to the sound.
@starchild3822
@starchild3822 7 лет назад
Thanks Carl. More great information. I would have thought in your "mah" example that the soft palate would automatically raise and lower. Lower on the "m" and raise on the "ah". Not stay the same. Unless it's manipulated? On one of my first lessons with an ex SS coach I was told that I had a small nasal port. Have to really work on the pharyngeal stuff to get some resonance there, otherwise I tend to get stuck in the mouth. You can really hear the difference in singers who use the pharyngeal space and others that don't. I watched a Heart concert on TV yesterday and Annie was just belting it out (sometimes with a bit of trouble. My wife even said that she would have a sore throat afterwards) but her sister Nancy really used the pharyngeal space and never strained at all. Not saying one was better than the other, just shows the difference.

yeah understanding this stuff gives you long term daily singing without any pain or strain, a real blessing!

Still trying to transition from high baritone to low tenor. For me it was perhaps always too late but Michael Spyres proves it can be done. He can deliver both a convincing and nice sounding "operatic" baritone, tenor and even countertenor. But perhaps impossible to do is to become a not very loud but clear and light "choral "tenor because they also speak that way.

Your technical explanations about the role of the soft palate are correct, but I don't know how you've come to the idea that this is what pharyngial voice is. Pharyngial voice has NOTHING to do with the soft palate position. The soft palate position is important and accessible, but it's not what distinguishes mixed voice from chest or head voice, or what produces twang or a powerful mixed voice.
@MRZEDDA
@MRZEDDA 2 года назад
Yes, in fact research has shown that pharyngeal voice is made by narrowing your pharynx through the activation of the middle pharyngeal constrictor. This movement covers your pyriform sinuses that are responsible for absorbing high frequencies in your voice. The result is a much brighter sound regardless of your soft palate positioning. Well said.

I looked into this when Tristan posted about it the other day. Apparently there was a unique sound for tenors circa 1650 (before they sang C5 in modal voice), but then SR created his own notion with that same name.
@cwehden
@cwehden 7 лет назад
what type of sound? I thought they used to sing more legit up there until they did it in full voice.
@MyristicMystic
@MyristicMystic 7 лет назад
It's kind of like a mix between falsetto and head. I stumbled into it when I was reading Anthony Frisell's book, and he said to work down from falsetto into head. It's not the witch's cackle, as this actually sounds good. This is all my speculation, but from what I understand tenors used to sing in falsetto at C5; the castrati would sing the C5s in full voice at the time, not tenors. I have seen voice coaches use software to analyze such sounds and I remember one saying it was falsetto even though it didn't sound exactly like what we think of as falsetto today.
@cwehden
@cwehden 7 лет назад
yeah maybe it was on a lighter amount of cord closure, how would they know though because recording didn't exist then? I guess it must have been written down somewhere.
@MyristicMystic
@MyristicMystic 7 лет назад
Carl, have you read this? petersenvoicestudio.com/2015/06/26/more-on-the-pharyngeal-voice/ Since in 1650 tenors didn't have "high Cs" in modal voice, what could they have been referring to when they said things like, "The falsetto by itself is a windy, anaemic, stupid tone; mixed, however, with goodly percentages of pharyngeal it becomes a living entity" back then?

Listen to an Aussie/Ocker call out loud: Ya right are ya? The normal reflex to get the sound right is to tighten & lower the back edge of the soft palate, teeth apart and holding still. This sound not only cuts like a knife but has no nasality. It’s what I would call a pharyngeal voice.

From my experience Pharyngeal voice is used in singin in very small amounts where you almost cant hear it(except for singers like Brian Johnson or Axl Rose they use it in a little larger amounts).For me pharyngeal voice just helps to thin out your chest voice at the right time and hand it over to head voice.Now im not some vocal coach expert or anything like that I just practice and sing so I dont have more knowledge than you or any other coach im just sharing my experience.Pharyngeal voice is very used in rock music(think Robert Plant or Freddie Mercury when he sings more of a hard rock stuff)because it cuts through the mix and its resonance it very focused and pointy so i wouldnt call it "bullshit".Its acctually not menat to be used by itself but in the blend of your chest/head resonance however when practicing this pharyngeal musculature it needs to be isolated to be worked out and start blending with your chest voice.If used only by itself it would sound comedic and silly thats why its only used in small amounts.

Ricky Kick How did you work on incorporating the pharyngeal voice, the chest and the head voice? I’m able to reach a b4 in my pharyngeal and headvoice, but my chest is stuck at F#4 and thins out dramatically after. I can still achieve vocal chord closure but it’s still unusable for songs especially if I’m trying to belt. Which register should I work on? Do I bring down my head or bring up my chest or start in the middle with the pharyngeal? Sorry for the paragraph
