The Lexus LS has a reputation as a solid luxury limousine, but this F Sport changes things up a bit by offering a compromise that leans toward handling and being more fun to drive. At $88,000, this LS 500 isn't "cheap", but it is a bargain against the competition. Nathan explains why in this review!

@@tinhinnh Wrong, reliability wasn't known from day one. The original LS400 had a few recalls at first, but that isn't the point. The point is that the original LS400 provided the same or a better experience than a 420SEL for the price of price of a 190E 2.6 or 300E. The LS500 is more reliable then the Germans, and the S and 7 outsell it. Reliability isn't enough nor was the only thing the original car made it's claim on.

The original LS 400 and the Infiniti Q45 were baller vehicles. In the late 80s & early 90s, if you were a rapper, you had to have one of these cars or a Ac Legend coupe, preferably. Times changed as people's money got longer and the price of a S Class or 7 series pushed farther away from the LS. People wanted cars that others couldn't afford, and the LS was affordable on a good lease deal as customers left for Bentleys and RRs. The LS appeals to me still as a reliable family car with elegant style.

On the other hand, the TTv6 is set up for quick torque off the line, and it pulls around 30mpg highway. The v8's torque doesn't really snap to until your foot's into the pedal quite a ways. I think they did the right thing by the car and how it'll be driven BUT it cost Lexus the "prestige" of being in the "big v8 sedan club". I think the 460's v8 was tuned a bit differently than the current 5.0.

@chrishackworth3182 Год назад
Yes, but the fact remains that it is a "tarted up Avalon". That's what I've even called mine in the past. My 94 ES300 was indeed a "tarted up Camry" The Avalon(now discontinued) is longer, wider, and lower than a Camry, has a longer wheelbase, larger interior and trunk, as well as fuel tank. Just look at other manufacturers as they share platforms and engines. Take VW/Audis MQB platform for example. It would be a little disingenuous to call a Q3 a tarted up Audi A1 or A3(mqb), as it's currently based on the longer(mqb) VW Tiguan. Lexus/Toyota use that 3.5L in many vehicles to save $ and because it's smooth and reliable. Both our 14 RX and 13 ES have that 3.5L V6 with 430k combined trouble free miles. Completely different story with our previous, and slightly more fun to drive, MB's and BMW's. My next daily Lexus will be an LS.

The LS is not a sport sedan. It's never been a sport sedan and was never intended to be one. I don't know why it's trying to be one now. It's sad that it's not the elegant, dignified V8 luxo-barge that it was originally intended to be. Flagship luxury sedans have become really odd though. You've got the 7-series that looks like an army tank, the S-class whose interior looks like a tacky Vegas casino, and now this LS trying to be a sport sedan. Weird times we live in. The automotive symbols of affluence just seem so unclassed and undignified nowadays, which I find odd. Maybe it's a difference between new money versus old money.

And that change of course is in part why it doesn't sell anymore. The interior is tight, the ride isn't as smooth as before and the loss of the V8 all caused people to walk. I submit for your consideration "it's the ride." None of the reviewers address the difference between the previous LS generations vs. your 2018-2023? "It's the ride" that the target demographic is using for buy or no buy. The runflats are the reason that buyers have fled. That sticker price is nothing realistically that’s a 100k car and you know what else’s that I can get from Lexus around that price point an LX, GX or Landcruiser… you have to be crazy to spend that much on just a car….especially from a boss move perspective.

It's crap at $88k. Genesis has several models $15k cheaper with better features. Jaguar F Pace is cheaper and nicer. My sister in law had a LS500 and it was at the dealer getting repairs several times a year.

Nathan, thanks for a great review! Have a ‘20 LS500 F-Sport rwd and love it! Beautiful evolution from my ‘08 LS460. Still assembled in the Tahara factory, these vehicles are solid, reliable, well thought-out, and fun to drive! They’re just so superior in every way!

I think I prefer the Lexus LS over the Toyota Camry I know the Lexus LS is competing against the Mercedes and BMWs but I think the Lexus LS is the nicer looking car then the Camry and it should be for $88,000

I'm considering the Kia K900 (hate the name) for it's overall amenities,design & bargain pricing @ 65k! Love the understated look, the refinement,& the interior design coming from a Korean brand competing with the big boys for less dough @ 20k!! This Lexus is nice by all means but that front grille (spindle design) just doesn't gel with the overall theme to me compared to the smaller F versions,the RCF or the IS F particularly. How does the Kia's overall quality & maintenance issues stack up,well hopefully there's a comparison test out there soon to review by these guys Roman or Nathan or both for that matter! BMW, Mercedes & Audi better not fall asleep at the wheel if they know what's good for them,by the way c'mon Cadillac your presence is definitely missing from the luxury automobile segment since discontinuing the CT6/XT6 especially the Blackwing version!

Try spending time at a Kia dealership and get back to me on the value proposition. A BIG part of the purchase of a Lexus is the dealership experience. I would not consider a Kia/Genesis as a premium vehicle until they invest in stand-alone premium dealership experiences.

@@grisa12345 Well you do know you have to crawl before you walk & Hyundai & Kia are doing just that considering there time in the industry. It's just a matter of time until their entire franchise go upmarket providing better service & quality befitting of an automotive company. I just think they're giving more bang for your buck which to me is an excellent form of competitiveness.

@@justmy2cents_ Not necessarily true. Tesla walked first by building out a supercharger network before they owned the EV market because they knew it would be a smart investment. If the Koreans want to be taken seriously in luxury they need to understand the experience from A-Z, making a great car isn’t enough.

@@grisa12345 Ok and Tesla also had major major issues that continue today.Vehicle catching fire, autopilot issues, software update issues & also some interior quality issues that at the current asking price shouldn't be an issue but it is because of growing pains trial by "fire" the crawl before you walk scenario. Kia keeps it simple but sophisticated especially with the K900 & their latest EV EV6 plus with their industries best warranty 5yr or 60,000 limited warranty/10yrs or 100,000 on power train you can actually relax much easier. But to each his own, that's why they have numerous amounts of automobiles to choose from my friend.
