I have just been listening to the the brand new Analogue Productions Atlantic 75 series issue of the Yes 1971 progressive rock epic 'The Yes Album'. This absolutely superb new Kevin Gray all-analogue cut is presented on 2x45rpm LPs pressed at QRP - Quality Record Pressings.
I also compare this to my 1971 UK original 'red and plum' LP, and discuss the sonic differences of this phenomenal reissue.

All the atlantic 75 titles have impressed thus far-this one is sort of unreal, getting close to possessing a one off lacquer, the sounds and music are revelatory.

The ATL 75 45 rpm TYA is indeed wonderful sounding. A US (not UK) first pressing original sounds stunning - it has a warmth and balanced naturalness the ATL 75 doesn’t in comparison. Howe’s electric guitar is very buzzsaw sharp on the UK original, somewhat tamed on the ATL 75 and just the right balance. The organ flourishes and cymbal decay are so real on a US first press. I too would love to hear Going For the One if they could elevate it. My second favorite Yes album

I'm hoping the new 33rpm Doors UHQR sets a precedent that means we can get a worthwhile audiophile treatment of Going For The One...

Fantastic review Dave. I've been on the same journey as you with this fabulous album (probably my favourite Yes album) , and always loved my UK Plum pressing which is just a beautiful copy and plays absolutely amazingly. I couldn't believe my ears when I listened to this version! I couldn't agree more that it is utterly incredible. Your description of the differences (improvements) is spot on. This AP Atlantic 75 series is just knocking it out the park!

Excellent review Dave! What stood out for me you hit on fully: The Drums and Bass combo is so rich and full and then the vocal instrument of Jon's voice makes for an incredible pressing! What a job that AP did, with Kevin Gray! Amazing!

Superb, in depth review as usual Dave. I only have a mid 70s repress of this album on the green & orange Atlantic label and have never found this particular pressing very inspiring. The music and playing though is outstanding & after listening to your comments, this new AP version will be my next purchase.

Excellent review and I can only agree wholeheartedly with all that you say. You used the word astonishing early in the video and that word sums the album up. The opening to side 4 (Perpetual Change) almost knocked me off my seat with the energy. Like you I have played this album so many times since I first got a copy in the mid 70s and heard things in my ageing ears that I'd never heard before. This is my 7th AP Atlantic 75 purchase and am looking forward to the many more (especially Fragile) that I have on order.

Fantastic Dave.Been waiting for your review. I received my copy last week. Like you this has blown me away. Difference to the original is night and day. Truly sensational. Kevin has peeled away some many layers revealing clarity and dynamism. Bills intricacies on the drums on now fully on show. Incredible I’m lost for words. Surely the biggest achievement by a mastering engineer so far in the series. 90125 was the same again incredible sounding. Remember these are not remixes,Kevin is giving us what’s on the tapes. Unfortunately my original is surplus to requirements 😊. Amazing Chad,Kevin take a bow. Would love Kevin to have a go at a couple of the upcoming Genesis titles. Dave fab video my friend ✊

Hi dave , just stumbled across your channel, i also love yes upto and including gfto. And genesis upto and including duke . I have the new yes 1971 lp on analogue productions 75th anniversary vinyl, and it sounds on par with my copy from the steven wilson 2018 box set. Such a shame they didn't laminate the cover like they did on sebtp. I have a question for you, why do all yes reissues not have the red & plum label ? Even the new 1972 and before reissues are all on orange and green , i wondered if you knew , because i find it baffling. Great show, thank you.
@DaveDenyer
@DaveDenyer 3 месяца назад
Good question: I think it’s because the original label for these albums in the US was green and orange. And these are US reissues, not UK ones. Just as well, because there wouldn’t be any Genesis Atlantic 75s, as the UK originals were not on Atlantic.

Good stuff! I will most likely grab this. It would be interesting to compare the AP issue to an original U.S. pressing as they were the first cuts on Atlantic. The U.S. original has a bit more of an open sound to the plum from memory.

I think this is the best sounding A75 I've heard so far and I've got most of the ones that are now out. This thing's sonic quality is indeed in a league of its own. I was listening to it yesterday again and you're right, the drums are otherworldly and the bass guitar is just there and beautiful. I have a tube preamp and I wonder if Kevin Gray's tube system for mastering just translates better to a tube HiFi system??
@DaveDenyer

Interesting notion… I also have tube amps, and generally love the sound of Kevin Gray’s cut LPs.

I'm a big Yes fan also and this is by far my favorite of theirs. Did not notice as huge an improvement as everyone else over the US OG but maybe that's a result of loving the album so much that I can't nick pick when the music is so great. That live record store day release was awful sounding but I still play it because of the music. I have another live Yes album from the Wakeman period that has way better sound. As an aside the thickness of my turntable is probably 1/10 of yours if that makes a difference.

Yes. Analogue Productions and QRP did a good job, for once. I have been digitizing my record collection for years, so I pay close attention to what I have digitized, sound AND sight looking at the graphs of the recordings. If the recordings have ticks and pops, I process them out, so I have a good recording, the way they were intended to be heard. In digitizing this album, the only tracks I had to process were the 2 tracks on Record 1, Side 2. In listening carefully to the tracks I digitize, I have found that with most of the premium records pressed in the U.S., the playing surface is much quieter than anything coming out of the E.U., other than Pallas record pressings. I also pay close attention to surface noise on the sections which are supposed to be silent, like lead-in, trail-out and in-between tracks.
@DaveDenyer
@DaveDenyer 3 месяца назад
I do give every record a thorough clean these days… It irks me that I need to, but once cleaned they do sound superb.
@automatedelectronics6062
@automatedelectronics6062 3 месяца назад
@@DaveDenyer As records are only new once, I resist cleaning them on my VPI RCM. What I do with a new record before I give it it's first play is to use my carbon fiber brush on it, then use my ZeroStat gun on it, to remove the static electricity which the brush created and finally blow it off with canned air. This should get rid of any loose particles on the record. If the record has ticks and pops, those are most often caused by defects in the record's surface. You can't clean off defects.

You know, I know I'm going to plummet in whatever shred of regard you might have for me when I tell you this, but noticing that this was the album you were going to talk about, I went to look for mine which I thought I still had. But, unfortunately, I think like 20 - 30 years ago I must've traded it in because I didn't think I liked it that much, say as compared to Fragile which I loved. Sorry... 😕 However, since it's been so long and you are genuinely fully impressed by this version, I will most definitely go back and listen to a FLAC version I'm sure I have of it and review the songs. What really intrigues me is that you are SO impressed with the leap in sound quality, that might very well make a big difference in my liking the album after all. I likely had a later US pressing of it that perhaps didn't sound that great. So, now I am quite looking forward to checking this album out again! Thank you Dave for reigniting my interest in this album! 😁 ***EDIT Oh, and I LOVE Bill Bruford too! REALLY dig all his stuff with Crimson...
