The whammy bar-or wigglestick as our friends at 60 Cycle Hum like to call it-is one of the most iconic pieces of guitar hardware ever created. Think about it, what would Jimi Hendrix sound like without his strat trem, or Eddie Van Halen without his dive bombs?
There are a ton of different tremolo systems available both on stock guitars and in the aftermarket world, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages (cough-cough, restringing a Bigsby).
So this week, Ryan, joined by special guest and Hippo Campus guitar tech Kai Brewster, decided to dive into all the different tremolo system types he could find, and talk about whats good-and bad-about each of 'em.

Speaking of stringing a Bigsby, I really appreciate Stringjoy's extra string length. That makes the job a little easier. Thanks.

You hit my favorites. I definitely use the whammy bar for warbles rather than dive bombs, but that's just due to the type of music I enjoy playing. The stock Fender Jazzmaster tremolo can work brilliantly. It just takes a good setup that gives you a steeper break angle across the bridge. I use Stringjoy .010-.048 strings on my Jazzmaster and Jaguar, so nothing too heavy, and I shimmed the neck on each about a degree. The Bigsby is not THAT hard to string up. I just keep a Leatherman with me and crimp the ball ends. I hear about tuning stability problems with Bigsbys, but both of mine hold pitch well. Try gently filing your bridge saddle slots to remove any tiny metal burrs. The Stratocaster tremolo is a thing of beauty. I float mine and love it. It does make string bends harder. Great video, fellas. Many thanks!

Fender offset trem system has been perfect for me. Never goes out of tune no matter what you do to it. My strat strings on the other hand go half sharp half flat from looking at it the wrong way.

In my experience a Bigsby with a roller bridge and roller nut, and strings tied with a Luthier's Knot or locking tuners has no greater instability than a Floyd Rose with locking nut. The only benefit the Floyd had that I have found are the fine tuners for adjusting between songs. I agree spring noise is a big part of the Strat sound, but properly played a Strat trem can be very subtle and fairly stable.

Worth mentioning G&L trems, which are generally like re-engineered fender trems. Their strat-style trem is one of my favorites

I have guitars with every system you tested except the Vibrola. I also have Stetsbar and Duesenberg vibrato equipped guitars and really thought these would be mentioned. Hipshot and Floyd Rose also offer hardware to mitigate several "cons" mentioned in your discussions.

Bigbsy guy here, I never liked the Strat trem, but I also didn't know you could adjust it until this video... Great video guys, I couldn't stop laughing during the Floyd Rose demo 😀

Granted I'm primarily a bassist, but I have not enjoyed any trem until my Squier VI which uses the Mustang/Jazzmaster style. I immediately had the bridge replaced and my awesome tech installed a roller bridge and properly shimmed the neck for more break-over angle; the result works wonderfully! The Fender VI improves it by adding a lock and the arm actually mounts rather than the Squier's mere friction fit, but that's effectively a $4000 upgrade! In the 80's I had an Ibanez X-body with a genuine Floyd Rose but the string tension bent the pegs that act as the pivot points so not only was tuning stability a problem but the action and intonation suffered. That's what taught me to say naughty words. 😝

Nice show. Good to know about the trems, things I didn't. Bigsby had been my fave, for the subtlety. Stringing was a challenge. I sold it because the Gretsch it was on didn't have a swell-friendly volume knob. Been looking at other guitars, but nothing has brought joy. So, I do have a Boss pedal with an expression pedal-controllable octave that will give the same effect, plus there's no tuning stability issues, other than you have to be sure to bring the pedal all the way back to get back to regular tune. Till I find the perfect guitar to add to the family, that'll do. Thanks to your show here, looks like I'm looking for the first good guitar I had, the Jazzmaster, or maybe a Strat.....

If you change one string at a time and tune to pitch, stretch, and tune to pitch before going to the next string, Floyds and no problem. I start at low E. No spring adjustment required.

For Bigsby string shift, use a StringRay tool and there are no problems in changing strings what so ever! ;) It's cheap to buy and solve your problem :)

The Vibramate String Spoiler has a similar purpose which also helps massively. Either should solve the stringing problem.

You have been seriously neglected. You need to see and use a RTO Tremolo. This is next level technology that you need to aware of.

DigiTech Whammy/DT (for the extreme stuff) and a Gamechanger Bigsby (for the subtle vibrato) on the pedalboard. 😁 For real vibratos, the Ibanez Edge Zero can't really be beat. All the stability of the Floyd Rose, with a variety of user experience improvements.

mustang's fender dynamic vibrato goes out of tune if you so much as LOOK at it wrong. locked mine up as soon as i got the tools to do so. steinberger's transtrem is worth mentioning too, being able to bend chords in tune. really cool stuff.

Not Tremolos....Just sayin' Correct me if I'm wrong but Tremolo does not affect pitch. Leo was wrong all those years ago and we've all just gone along with it. Change my mind 😉

No you're right, there are a lot of counterintuitive names in the guitar space, but they've stuck and that's just what it's called now. In strings, "gauge" is totally misused, it's merely the size in 1,000ths of an inch, has nothing to do with wire gauges. Also, 80/20 "bronze" is not bronze at all, it's brass.

It's what the community calls them. So regardless of what the technical definition is, your valid opinion is made invalid. Tremolo sounds better than vibrato anyway

Every guitar tremolo type...except the Maestro Vibrola, Kahler and Wilkinson. In a sense, the Kahler is a better Floyd Rose. Not only can you lock it by simply tighetning a set screw, but the saddles move in 6 directions. That allows you to adjust not only intonation and string height, but also string spacing.

You guys didn't mention the Floyd Rose Speedloader. Many of these trems were sold back in the day and nobody makes strings for them any more...not for years. You think you could look into manufacturing a few sets for those of us that don't want to pay $50+ for 15 year old strings on eBay? You'd make a lot of people happy and keep a bunch of guitars out of landfills.
@Stringjoy
@Stringjoy Год назад
We did not-IMHO those were a terrible crime committed against the guitar community, I can't tell you how many folks I've heard from that bought guitars from them which are unusable after they discontinued the strings. We are not able to make strings for those (and neither are most/any companies) due to the way they were made initially, tooling up to do so would cost over $100,000 which you would never get back out of it. I assume they thought, "Brilliant! We can sell them this guitar and they'll have no choice but to buy strings from us forever," without thinking through the consequences to all those players if and when they discontinued the strings.
@Meetlofe

@@Stringjoy Bummer. Thanks for the reply, anyway. Even years after they stopped making the strings they kept promising that they'd be back in production soon. That was several years ago.

It's dissapointing how poorly the Floyd rose was represented in this video. It's by far better than all the other options in terms of reliability, tuning stability, subtlety, and extreme usage. They are also not hard to tune or setup, you just have to learn how. Most people with bad opinions of Floyd roses just never had a quality Floyd rose, and only played a "licensed by Floyd rose'" model or other low end guitars with cheap replicas on them. Floyd rose is great and you should revisit it with the same level of treatment you gave the others.
