Yes you CAN use Gamma Display Assist on FX3!! It's super easy, but took 6 months to figure it out.

Are you sad to see Gamma Display Assist greyed out on your FX3 while shooting SLOG3? So was I! That is until I figured out that you can still shoot in SLOG3 without being in Log Shooting Mode. If you use multiple Sony cameras, this will help you develop a consistent workflow, no matter which camera you grab. Nailing exposure is one of the biggest challenges with SLOG3 and this makes it as easy as possible while still being able to see a somewhat contrasty image on your camera screen.

on my ZV E1 it shows me as 709(800%) which looks the same as gamma assist without flexible iso, is there a difference between the two? i know when it records it records in slog3 but as far as picture on screen goes for my camera they look identical
@RandumbTech
@RandumbTech Год назад
Yes - there is a BIG difference between the two. Even though they may look the same on your screen, the Zebra values will be very different. I've found using zebras is the only way to nail correct exposure every time. When using gamma display assist, it does not impact the zebra values that would be used for SLOG3. But if you are using anything other than that, the zebras will have to correspond to whatever LUT or Look you've selected. For example, the target is 41 IRE middle grey when shooting SLOG3. If you use that value when viewing in 709 on your camera, the footage will be underexposed. I don't have a ZV-E1, but I would assume that you can set up Gamma Display Assist the same way that I did with my FX3. If you use multiple Sony cameras, this is the much better solution and allows you to have consistency across all of them. Good luck!

I have been having the same issue and no one has addressed it. Thanks Is there a difference between Slog3 Flexible Iso vs Picture profile Slog-3?
@RandumbTech
@RandumbTech Год назад
Glad this was helpful! There is no difference between those two modes in terms of what it records. However, there is a BIG difference in how they are presented on your camera screen though. If you use Flexible ISO, I believe it defaults to Rec.709 so your Zebra values are different than what they would be for SLOG3. I find it much easier to use Gamma Display Assist across all of my Sony cameras so that way the only thing that changes depending on which camera I'm using are the dual native ISO's. For FX3 it's ISO 640/12800 and A7iv it's ISO 800/3200. All the other settings are exactly the same between the two cameras and match up nearly perfectly in post (with manual WB set)

When I set slog3 on pp1, the histogram changes compared to when Log shooting mode is on. Not massively, but it does change. I wonder if there's any other parameter that one needs to toggle to make it exactly the same.
@RandumbTech
@RandumbTech Год назад
Hmmm, I'm not seeing that on mine. The only thing I can think of is if it's somehow displaying the histogram with the LUT applied. That's what happens with the Zebras, so it's absolutely possible. I've been using the Gamma Display Assist workflow for all my Sony cameras and it works wonderfully. Give it a shot!

Thx Phillip! It really is a much easier workflow to use Gamma Display Assist for ALL of your cameras - that way you only have to remember one set of Zebra values. I can't tell you how many times I screwed up the exposure because I had a LUT loaded or was using Rec709 and didn't realize it. 🤣

@RandumbTech
@RandumbTech 2 месяца назад
When shooting in SLOG3, 41% for grey card and 92%+ (max is 94%) to preserve highlights. Lately, I've been shooting with PP off. It's a much easier workflow and I don't have to spend anytime color grading. The key is to make sure you nail the white balance though.

alright, it's great, but how can I do that and shoot Cine EI with Gamma Assist? Is it possible?
@RandumbTech
@RandumbTech 10 месяцев назад
Unfortunately, Cine EI forces you to use Log Shooting mode so Gamma Assist would not be available. You will have to pick one or the other. Personally, I do not like the Cine EI workflow as it requires a TON of exposure smoothing in post. If I know I'll be in a dark situation, I'll just set my ISO range from 12,800-51,200 and continue to shoot Auto ISO. That way, I have a properly exposed image at all times and can just color correct the clip without having to worry about the exposure changing throughout. Hope that helps!
@mattabonimedia

how do you se rec709 on your cameras screen while shooting in slog3? is that possible?
@RandumbTech
@RandumbTech 7 месяцев назад
Yes - you would have to use "Log Shooting Mode" and then choose the 709 Viewing LUT. If I only had one camera, I'd probably use that option. But since I use multiple Sony bodies it's much easier to create a custom PP for each cameras that runs SLOG3 / Gamma Display Assist. That way I only have to remember 1 set of Zebra values that I can then use across ALL of my cameras.

Thank you for this but I have a question. What is the dual native ISO now that you’ve gone to PP1 or is it the same as Flexible ISO(640&12,800)?
@RandumbTech
@RandumbTech 8 месяцев назад
Glad it was helpful! That's correct, it's the same 640/12800. What's interesting is that if you use Cine EI, the base ISO's are 800/12800. I have no idea why it's set up like that, but I'm sure there are smarter channels out there that cover it. 🤣

Im confused? There’s no need to turn on the gamma display assist on my FX3. slog-3 has a built “display lut” I just turn it on and off. No need to mess with the gamma display assist?
@colewilliams3437
@colewilliams3437 10 месяцев назад
Ahhh I think there was a firmware update because mine is brand new and there is no option for slog under the picture profiles. Makes sense to me now
@RandumbTech
@RandumbTech 10 месяцев назад
There are many different ways to achieve the same result. The issue with a "display lut" is that you then have to expose for that lut, not SLOG3. That can be a real challenge when using different Sony bodies that don't necessarily share the same luts. I much prefer to use Gamma Display Assist because it keeps things super simple. I set my exposure comp to +1.3 and zebras to 94+. If I start clipping, I dial it back a smidge. This is the way I have it set up across all 4 of my Sony cameras and it works great for my workflow. If owned just the FX3, I'd be fine using either option. Good luck!

Randumb. Im a novice shooter with the FX3 , I been shooting with the A73 and A9 with video/photos for 4 years. Asking since the FX3 is more complex can you tell me what's best for me to get quality video straight out of this camera without a lot of post editing. Should I just use Cine-Ei or Cine-Ei quick shooting color gamut S-Gamut3.cine/s-log3 . I understand ISO and ND filters to stop down light for outdoor shooting, I always watch my Histogram for exposure. But the H and Low values on the screen shows base iso 800EI/6.0E/L and 3200EI/8.0E/L I dont quite understand. When speaking shooting 41% grey are we talking using S-log3 shooting flat , then using your own lut in post?? Im guessing shooting with flat profile getting the grey %correct gives you more DR and better shadows and lower highlights?? , I have lut turned on shooting S709 . Please explain. Im a lil confused. Im going to shoot outdoors in sunlight/shade and indoors recording my friend in a nightclub. so should I just shoot s-log3 or S709 lut with base iso 800 and exp index 3200ei/8.0e?? EI=exposure index 8.0E is that 8 stops???
@RandumbTech
@RandumbTech Год назад
If you are looking for decent footage straight out of camera, you can't shoot in SLOG3. If you shoot in SLOG3 you will need to color grade it in post which can be time consuming. However, the trade-off is that if you don't use SLOG3, you are giving up about 2-3 stops of dynamic range which makes a BIG difference in how your footage looks (especially highlight rolloff). When I don't shoot in SLOG3, I turn PP OFF, set a manual white balance, and adjust my exposure compensation to ~+0.3-0.7. I would challenge you to stick with SLOG3 though. Once you figure out a workflow in post, it's very easy to get great results with little effort. Check out @CullenKelly channel - he is amazing and will walk you through the color grading process step by step. As for the 41% IRE - that is the zebra value that I use with a grey card to get perfect exposure every time. The beauty of using Gamma Display Assist is that no matter which camera I'm using, it's the same number. As soon as you start using a LUT or 709 on your display, that changes the IRE target values. I do not rely on the histogram at all for video. My last suggestion - DO NOT use Cine EI. That is a very complicated workflow in post and not worth it in my experience. It will lead to some pretty wild exposure swings throughout the clip that are very difficult to correct. Instead, I shoot in essentially Auto ISO (Sony calls it Flexible ISO). Comparing the footage shot at ISO 10,000 and 12,800 side by side you can see the difference, but in real life situations it's barely noticeable.
