Staying at a 20's or 30's themed hotel would have been great. I really think they'd do well with a total deco type hotel , in the vein of the Tower of Terror. Shame it never came to be.
@Kai0nTheMoon The only thing is that not a lot of good things happened between 1900 to the 1950s. There was both World Wars, the Great Depression and other boring, and not so good things happening..
@@TheCrohnsPatient674 What? There has been a war in basically every decade of American history. A ton of great things happened between 1900 and 1950; the introduction of the car into the mainstream, the television, airplanes, helicopters, zeppelins, telephones, radios, computers, movie theaters, radar, air conditioning and hundreds of more literal life changing inventions. Most homes didn't even have electricity before then. There was the Golden Age of Hollywood, which gave us timeless films we still love today. There was art deco, the Flapper era, the first bikini, the first rocket sent into space, Einstein breaking new ground in physics, Hubble breaking new ground in astronomy, Fleming breaking new ground in medicine. We had timeless sporting events and some of the most iconic players in sports like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams and more. 1900 - 1950 are the decades that defined the American Dream. It set the standard for how daily life functions. They are the years that made the United States into the world power it is today and the example of other countries to follow. It's strange that you find all of that 'boring'.
@@Kai0nTheMoon Yes. But most of that wasn’t talked about. Especially since our stock market crashed, causing the Great Depression, and was never fixed until WW2. And we lost thousands of soldiers during each.
Corrections* So perhaps posting this at 1am wasn't so bright after all, as several viewers have pointed out I misread the release for "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" as 1980 when it was actually 1988. Also, aI mixed up the credits during the intro for the Pop Century Resort Legendary Years footage, which was graciously provided by Central Florida Sights and Sounds. It's correct when it's actually shown in its full duration.
Man I would have LOVED to see the rest of Pop Century. I’d be fascinated to see how they’d handle the 1930s. Not a great fun decade. As a history buff I’m hella bummed it never happened
I stayed at pop century in 2010. I remember looking across the lake and seeing the abandoned buildings and not knowing what they were for. kinda sad they're abandoned like that but still cool too
I miss the cheesiness of themed restaurants. They have a weird charm to them. It's sad to see them on the decline. Also, was that a clip from last weeks episode of Better Call Saul? I didn't know the clips you use were so up to date lmao.
TBH there are so many more worthy Disney movies that don't get recognition that put WFRR to boot. Like Hunchback of Notre Dame. Finding ANYTHING relating to that movie is impossible.
As mentioned in the video, there’s an entire attraction devoted to it in ToonTown Land in Disneyland. To be honest, while it’s an entertaining ride, Roger Rabbit has never felt like a true Disney property. The adult jokes and sexual imagery fit something like Universal a lot more than Disney.
It is annoying, when i was down in Florida staying at Pop Century resort and we stayed in the ‘1980’s’ part. There was a GIANT Roger Rabbit almost right outside my room and I was so happy.
When I was at Disney World in 91, there was a building labeled "Acme" and it had a TON of Roger Rabbit themed stuff , including big wooden boxes that when you opened the lid, it made the sound of a train coming towards you. It was in MGM studios, and I believe we went through that building at the end of the back lot tour.
Hey I just wanted to say I love your channel. Your editing style is great, and you’re really good at giving factual information while incorporating your personality into it.
Thanks Jessie! Means a lot to read and I'm so glad you appreciate my adding more of my "personality" into the videos. I was really hesitant to do that for a long time but realized it was about time.
The Pop Century thing bugs me to no end. It’s actually imho a great resort, except, I don’t understand why the Art of Animation expansion wasn’t just done as a suite version of the Legendary Years. They even could’ve had an animation take on it, since a good portion of that era was when Disney was working on several of its classics...Snow White, Sleeping beauty, Cinderella, etc.
That explains The Little Mermaid standard rooms at an all-suites resort! I always wondered about that. It's nice that this way non-families can still stay there without having to shell out lots of money for extra bedrooms they won't use. (Haha, shell, accidental Mermaid pun.) I bet one day the Pop Century resort will be converted to more Art of Animation rooms, and that connection bridge will come to be, because they really got a hit on their hands with the Animation resort.
I was shocked when I heard AoA was suppose to be the first half of Pop. I stayed at both twice each, although I never stayed in the Little Mermaid rooms. How peculiar to know the Mermaid rooms were meant to be Pop. Almost like a ghost, if that makes sense.
I agree. And they'll make the new Art of Animation rooms based on other movies, like maybe Wall-E, Monsters Inc, Wreck It Ralph, Mulan, Tarzan or Hercules. It's more attractive than decades, but I personally love the decades theme! Love the 90s and 80s and all the old school stuff they have on display. ☺
Nicole Hopson - we did the exact same a couple of times. For some reason we could normally get a wheelchair spot on a bus going to AoA faster than to PC late at night.
If anything, I wish Roger Rabbit's Hollywood and the Mt. Fuji Ride were built. Roger rabbit will probably never happen, but It's possible Disney could create a Japanese bullet train motion simulator kind of like Kong Skull Island, but I doubt that's at the top of their list
Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. It could be like a Motion simulater bullet train vehicle were you would leave from an underground station and ride as if your actually taking a train in Japan, then come face to face with 1 or 2 monsters reeking havoc, possibly even fighting. Only problem is Disney would have to use a lesser-known movie monster, since Universal owns all the big ones
I worked in the Biergarden for a few years. The break room is the original queue area and still has the trademark show building entrance doors against the wall - they built a wall on the other side and they're used as closet space when I quit around 10 years ago.
Maelstrom was dead before it closed. It was empty most of the time. They had to close it cause it was too expensive to maintain. At least Frozen brought life to that area.
Considering the space is till there, here's hoping one day we'll see the Rhine River Cruise, or some kind of Germany-themed attraction. Perhaps a Grimm's Fairy Tales boat ride? Would feel right at home w/Disney & you already have iconic characters to work with, like Snow White.
I feel like they would be too dark. I have a book of them, the original stories, and I never heard of such a grimm version of Cinderella, quite literally
@@chiaraj1003 Then you haven't read the actual book that the film was based off of but was changed to be more disney. Basically in the Brothers Grimm version, the two stepsisters do whatever they can to fit into the glass slipper with one cutting off her big toe and the other cutting her heel off and at the wedding of Cinderella and the Prince, birds peck out the eyes of the step sisters and the step mother making them blind as they end up as blind beggars.
Most of the European princesses have homes in the Magic Kingdom Fantasyland. Cinderella has her castile in Magic Kingdom. Snow White has hers in Disneyland
I remember being excited for Copperfield Magic Underground. I was a BIG fan of David Copperfield in the 80s and 90s (saw him perform live a couple times and even got to help him with one of his tricks when I saw him in the 80s, which was pretty awesome). I think I have a photo somewhere of the "coming soon" billboard they had outside MGM in the 90s.
It was time tho. It was never super popular and the frozen ride is amazing!!! I may be a bit bias tho since I only went on Maelstrom once when I was young and it scared the crap outta me😂😂😂
Eisner was a real cocksucker. He didn't care about Disney, he just cared about the money. Thank god everybody saw the piece of shit that he was and canned his ass to replace him with Bob Iger.
Just stayed at Pop Century. Got home a few days ago. DON’T STAY THERE!!!! They’re having serious problems with customer service and we heard from over 50 other families who were having serious issues with management. They cost us an entire day of our vacation then refused to refund us for that night. It took a different manager from somewhere else to get them to finally do the refund. And while talking to other guests, one woman said she’d stayed there close to 30 times and would never return as it was no longer the fantastic resort she remembers.
Cassie C what happened? I stayed in that particular resort twice and never had an issue. Stay away from the All Star resorts though. Haven’t heard anything good about them.
mindyschocolate - I’ve never heard anything good about Allstar, either. As for Pop Century, it’s a massive management fuckup. They’re losing bags, not giving people rooms until late at night- we got a room at 7:30 pm. We’d been there since 11am and had been forced to spend the entire day in the lobby of the damn hotel. Not exactly what we’d planned with such an early arrival! They also screwed up my motorized wheelchair rental, then demanded we turn over extremely expensive and hard to replace medical equipment to the third party company that handles the baggage for them. We refused, obviously. I’m not about to leave the charger for the electrical device in my spine with a monkey who can’t read numbers in size 20 font on neon baggage tags. (When we returned from finally eating dinner, it was 10:30pm but our bags STILL weren’t in our room! She had to go downstairs and force the man to deliver the bags. He tried to claim he didn’t know where to take them, but the tags on our luggage were identical to the tags they’d put in a dozen other suitcases, all of which had been delivered safely. My mom is hard to piss off but she all but exploded.) They also were extremely derogatory to every disabled person we saw to the concierge for assistance, including me. The guy refused to move to a spot where I could clearly hear him and be on the same level as him from my wheelchair. They had 3 open spots that would have been perfect, but for the 1.5 hours I spent with him, I was spoken down to, literally and figuratively. I’m physically disabled, not a moron. Then comes the fact that they had zero clue how to activate anyone’s bands or get new bands working. Everything they “did” had to be later fixed at the counters in one of the parks. One woman in our group was denied access to the room despite having been registered to said room for 5 months! Thankfully, they’d screwed up and given me a grey band at check in so I had bought a new one, so the other woman kept my grey one in her purse to use a room key. We lost at least 5 hours of park time to band fuckups caused directly by Pop Century. Like I said, other guests said they’d previously stayed there and loved it, but would never be returning. I heard that from probably 6 families in 5 days. One family was entirely new to Disney and said they may never return to Disney at all if that’s how the hotels are run! We told them that no, the management being so horrible isn’t normal at all and they’d likely love a stay at a different Disney property, including the Art of Animation across the lake. (Which we hadn’t realized was part of Pop Century originally! My mom got a kick out of it when I called her after watching this video.)
@@thecraftycyborg9024 that sucks! But maybe those awful cast members don't work there anymore or every day. It's very unlikely for cast members to be rude. Btw, what's your favorite Disney resorts to stay?
Zerox A. M. - considering the systemic nature of the problems at Pop Century and how recently I was there (3 months ago), I sincerely doubt they’ve all been replaced. I’m certainly not saying to never stay on Disney property- their hotels are normally fantastic! I’d just avoid Pop Century until at least 2019, if not longer, to give them time to fix the issues there. As for where I like to stay, I’ve personally only stayed at one other resort- the Fort Wilderness Campground. That place was amazing!! If you want down time between park time, it’s easily the best place to go. We always needed a couple hours of rest midday as my little brother had to nap or he’d start having non-stop seizures by 8pm. The campground offers bike rentals, 2 pools, multiple jungle gyms, tennis courts, tons of walking trails, 2 or 3 little resort stores, and even fireside sing-a-longs and movies after dark. They offer camping spots for tents, trailers, and they have cabins. My parents have stayed at the Polynesian and a couple of other mid-tier resorts and always had great luck. And the families across the lake at Art of Animation, which is in the budget class with Pop Century, said they had great service.
@@thecraftycyborg9024 thanks for the response! I have always been in love with the Polynesian and Fort Wilderness, 2 beautiful resorts! And Art of Animation looks so beautiful too! Love all the big characters. Hope your family can have a great time next time and hope your lives are full of happinness, even with all the health problems. I have a lot of health problems too and it's scary, but I trust in God. Disney is such a magical place!
I stayed in Pop Century this winter break. I was left wondering why it was called Pop CENTURY if it only reperesented 50 years instead of 100. Now I know. I kinda wish the other half of Pop Century was built.
I worked at Disney during the late 80s, and was one the opening crew at the Studios. We noted that crowds went nuts at Roger Rabbit character appearances in the park, and that Disney may have wanted to be careful about his popularity eclipsing that of Mickey.
@@Captain-Cosmo It was a good move not include Roger Rabbit. It was a good movie, but that's it. Some kids these days don't know who Roger Rabbit is, but they sure know Mickey!!!!
You'd be amazed how many young kids today know Roger Rabbit. I found it amazing myself. Parents who have a special connection to Roger have introduced it to their children. Around Easter time when Roger is included in the bunny hops and meet-and-greets, take a look at how kids line up for him and shout his name. It's remarkable.
It wouldn't be there anymore. None of the original attractions are there, including The Great Movie Ride which closed a couple of months ago for a new one. It's the same thing at Universal Studios - none of the original attractions are there including Kong and Jaws.
Just to add to the David Copperfield bit. You can see most of the architecture and money spent on that building in the newly opening Opry City Stage restaurant as shown in your video.
Rainforest cafe is actually owned by Landry's, a company that owns tons of other restaurants too. Meanwhile, the Hard Rock Cafe is now owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida since 2007. Disney and Universal have never owned either one. They just have franchise operations on site.
there is actually a theme park in Japan's Mount Fuji. It's called "Gulliver's Kingdom", it opened in 1997, but sadly in 2001, it was short lived, most likely due to poor attendance. The infamous attraction in it is the "Suicide Forest".
I had the Roger Rabbit book, and it was called, Who KILLED Roger Rabbit, NOT Who Censored RR. Mandela Effect? Anyone else remember the book title saying "Killed" instead of "Censored"?
I can't believe that Copperfield restaurant was only 6 weeks from opening and they couldn't make it work! That would have been so cool to experience! What a huge waste of work and money.
I'm so pissed the Legendary Years never got built! The Animation Resort is just more IP garbage shoved into the park. Roger Rabbit should still have his own land at Disney Studios representing a fantasy version of Hollywood.
I don’t even know how to tell you how much I love your content. I’m a crazy Disney history fan (even tho I’ve only been to it when I was small) and I’m so happy that this channel exists. Love it so much ❤️❤️❤️
I wish all EPCOT world pavilions had/kept a ride or show that showcased their culture. I really enjoyed revisiting those attractions as I grew up, to appreciate them and the sense of wonder they inspired all over again I don't like the current direction Disney has taken with replacing those educational attractions with attractions that feature their movies/IP, including Finding Nemo replacing The Living Seas, Frozen replacing Maelstrom, and The Three Caballeros replacing El Rio del Tiempo
Who Framed Roger Rabbit came out in 1988, I saw it the theater but was too young to get most of the jokes. As an adult I can say it's an awesome film that doesn't get it's proper credit! 😣
Yeah I agree. I first watched it when I was 9 or 10 and I loved it even though I didn’t get the adult jokes either, but now I’m 20 and I love it even more now that I understand those jokes. I don’t know if you would agree with me, but I hope that someday they could make Roger Rabbit a meet and greet character again.
Just got an annual pass to Disney world after watching your videos I look like a genius to my wife as we walk around the parks! Great stuff keep it up!
I remember in 2005 I saw the Legendary Years building from our deck at Pop Century... it was so foggy and dark on the other side of the lake I was genuinely spooked by it
I think the answer is very clear for those who own Roger Rabbit it would have to be "Gary K. Wolf" he created the character and featured him in three published books.
Is it possible that the WWE bought some of the old Copperfield props? Look into WrestleMania 2013 that was held in NJ. They had a towering Statue of Liberty that was part of they’re set. I don’t know, makes me wonder.
i've watched loads of vids on this channel and wanted to say the editing is great how you overlap buildings with the plans to the perfect narration. awesome
Knowing Walt Disney loved trains. I would like to see a resort property that had multiple hotel buildings painted and themed off of the biggest Railroads that existed in Walt Disney's days. The Main center building would be based off of his railroad. Each building would have a massive HO-scale layout representing that building's railroad theming with prototypical prototypes that worked on those railroads. There would also be something for those young and old to interact with.
This was a really cool topic, Mark! If you can dig up more started-but-abandoned attractions, I'd like to learn about them. :-) Thanks for the videos and keep up the good work!
I'm always blown away by the depth of your research! I can't imagine the amount of time and resources it takes for you to pull it all together, but I know we all appreciate your hard work for each and every video!
I’m so glad you talked about the legendary years resort! I was OBSESSED with the concept as a kid (not sure why, I think it has to do with my current career as an anthropologist since I literally study pop culture for a living now haha) and no one else ever seemed to know about it. I was so sad it was never made, but honestly it was the right call, I can’t imagine it being profitable for them (or even making back enough money/having enough guest interest to make it worth constructing and continually running).
Man, I wish I could have experienced the golden age of themed restaurants. I used to have one called The Mayan that was my absolute favorite restaurant ever, but it's been closed for years after a massive decline in quality.
So pop century was built because I stayed there in 2009. It was and 80's or swing styled building. Also MGM did have a few who framed Roger rabbit themed areas including a store and maybe a restaurant. Also 2009.
I went to Disneyworld right after 9/11 with my family as a kid. It was a ghost town but it was awesome to have the park basically to yourself. Literally no line for anything.
Yeah I agree. Now I know that some would argue that Roger Rabbit isn’t as popular as he used to be, but I would argue that him not being in the parks hurt his popularity drastically. But at least Disney got the rights back to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
I am so fucking amused, when I was on a group trip to NYC I rolled my eyes when my group all decided to eat at that Sbarro... learn something new every day.
