Continuing the "Mealstrom" curse of my past (see the 5 WDW Remnants video), it seems I accidentally said "Anna" instead of Elsa when talking about a particular effect...forgive the blunder. If it makes you feel any better I have it correct in the script, and am more than aware which sister is which :)

My disappointment is multi-level: First, I really don't like the current trend of all Disney attractions requiring a movie tie-in. If you look at rides like the Haunted Mansion, its story was fabricated by the Imagineers. It didn't rely on a movie for setting or characters. Second, I've always felt that EPCOT, especially the World Showcase, was about celebrating the countries and cultures around the world. Anything movie related or Disney character related were reserved for Magic Kingdom or MGM.

I wasn't surprised by Disney making a frozen ride but I am surprised that they would replace a ride. 1) The original ride seemed really cool and obviously had a lot of fans. It was also rooted deeply in the culture of Norway 2) Frozen was such a hit, I find it quite shocking that Disney would decide that it was not worthy of a whole new, original concept. And to replace a ride that actually looked quite popular and thrilling.

@@SuperMovieLvr933 The reasons projections almost always look off in recordings is that usually the cameras recording don't have the proper frame rate, lens length, and/or other various settings set correctly. The frame rates are often purposefully made off on the projections by the creators to make it nearly impossible to copy them on unauthorized recordings clearly (basically built in copyright protections). The other issues are usually just caused by lack of knowledge or ability. Basically, the projections are specifically designed to be seen clearly by the naked eye in the specific lighting situation they are currently in. I honestly prefer true animatronics as well but I do see why they do not use them as often on rides anymore, the maintenance on the smaller parts that make up facial features is far more intense and difficult to get to than the larger parts that make up the rest of the body.

As a Dane, I'm mad they got rid of it, as well as the Denmark Pavilion, but still like the Mexico Pavilion (at least the restaurant). Since Norway was the one representing Scandinavia, they should've kept the history surrounding the region. I don't care what Arendelle is modeled after, Scandinavia is *_real_* . Frozen should've been put into DHS or Magic Kingdom, not somewhere that is meant to represent the places around the globe
@Inlelendri
@Inlelendri 5 лет назад
As a fellow Dane, I completely agree. World Showcase rings rather hollow when you think you can just swap a real country for a not even just fictionalised one, but Disneyfied one because nah, totally the same, innit? My mother was a Dane and we grew up thinking anything that came from Denmark was great. I enjoyed the Maelstrom ride as well and really love the original intent of the world showcase. In reality though, most travelers to WDW are not huge fans and don't always have a lot of nostalgia for the old rides and original content. You think it is easier to convince a family to spend thousands of dollars to travel to WDW to see Maelstrom or a ride based on the movie their daughter has watched 50 times? It is the festivals at Epcot and the updates like this that keep the park open. I wish it weren't so but it is seems the way it works. Now if we could only get an update to the Imagination pavilion that returns that ride to its former glory.

I really appreciate the attitude you have of this ride. I miss Maelstrom like crazy, and I agree that the whole "turn World Showcase into IP Land" thing is awful, but I think it's a fine ride for what it is. It's nice to hear someone not just berate it because it's Frozen :)
@YesterworldEntertainment

Glad to hear someone else shares the same view :) Like I said, I just can't get behind the whole "I Hate Frozen Ride" mindset. Yeah, I really do miss Maelstrom, and I also have a HUGE problem with turning the World Showcase into a bunch of IPs, but I find Frozen Ever After just too dang enchanting to get too upset. And they keep enough nods to the original that it's obvious they wanted to be respectful of it's past.

Sad to see Maelstrom go, it always held a special place in my heart as the first ride I rode at Disney World. Our plane landed in the evening and Magic Kindom was closing soon and it would've been a waste but Epcot was open late so we went there. They didn't have Test Track yet, so we went to what seemed to be the only thrill ride in Epcot. Maelstrom was hardly a thriller but at least that meant my grandparents could ride with us. They tended to sit out a lot of rides obviously but Maelstrom and the boat ride at the Mexico pavilion (the second ride we got on) we had the whole family riding. I always loved when the troll sent you "back over the falls" even if it wasn't really that scary.

Really weird to see Joe Rohde without is signature not-up-to-Disney-standards-of-grooming ear thingie. Anywho, I've said this before to many friends - Maelstrom will always be a more popular ride in death than it was in life, mainly because of what it was replaced by. People mad about a Disney IP taking it's place really should have been paying attention prior to it. That ship sailed when Aladdin and Jasmine started showing up in Morocco, or Snow White in Germany, or Belle in France, etc. Or maybe the Living Seas with Nemo and Friends? Corporation and government sponsorships moved out of Epcot - Disney filled the void. That said, I'll always miss Giant Cruise Ship Director Mural Lady. RIP in peace.

Heck, even before they ended up going with Nemo and Friends, there were plans to bring in the Little Mermaid to the Living Seas. EPCOT simply wasn't as popular (and thus profitable) as Disney had thought it would be when they built it, and bringing in Disney characters (you know, the stuff people actually go to Disney World for) was the obvious solution.

We saw it as an excuse to escape the Florida heat and we found the ride to be disappointing at best, but over the years, we've grown quite fond of it. The line was always short and it wasn't as thrilling, but the story it told was such an amazing telling of Norwegian culture that it grew on my family. We were so sad and disappointed that it was replaced with a simple rehash of the Frozen movie and our short wait time grew to an hour. The ride was no longer a tradition. Afterwards I'd drag my parents to look at the super expensive ski jackets in the gift shop, and jump around on the longboat outside until someone yelled at me for climbing the serpent neck.

I understand that the Frozen ride is not a bad ride, but it feels like it was a rushed project. There were a lot of parts that just had little animated snowflakes on the wall, and it wasn’t very cohesive... I got there early in the morning and only waited 10 minutes, but I would have been disappointed if I waited that 3 hour line for it TvT

I’m so glad I got to go on Maelstrom back in 2011 before it became a Frozen ride. I have some mixed emotions on it, though I wonder if people criticizing it for being a movie tie-in also criticize the ride in the Mexico pavilion for being a movie tie-in as well. Or perhaps that pavilion doesn’t matter as much. Either way, I do love Frozen but I miss Maelstrom and would have loved to get to go on it one more time.

I remember Maelstrom being one of my favorite Epcot rides as a kid, although for the longest time I just called it "that Viking ride with the trolls in it," honestly though, when I heard about the Frozen thing, it didn't really surprise or upset me too much. Frozen was a gigantic hit (and, over-saturated or no, it is a damn good movie), so the higher ups probobly demanded they do something with it, and of all the things to do that with, Maelstrom was the most logical fit. It sucks that Epcot has gone the way of just being another Disney park, as opposed to being a showcase of futurism, technology, and the worlds shared culture (y'know an Experimental Prototype Cmmunity Of Tommorow...), but that's modern Disney for ya, it is what it is.

To be honest, never rode this attraction so I have no opinions, but I can understand why people would be upset. It would be like removing a iconic attraction at Disneyland for something new which had been considered a few times by Disney imagineers. The haunted mansion was considered to be removed to change New Orleans Square into a Pirate's theme area which fans fought tooth and nail to keep the mansion in its proper place. So I understand completely why fans would be upset. Yet, Disney has said that the park is not meant to be a museum. It's meant to grow and change...for the better or worse.
@stanfordite

No Disney is NOT meant to grow and change. Disney actually IS a museum and needs to be treated as a national monument on par with the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore. "Change" needs to be a four letter word at Disney.

@@mindyschocolate No he's not right and Walt's dead so who cares if it doesn't change? They could've stopped building in the mid 80s and I'd still go. When I seize Disney in a hostile takeover, I'm going to be the Donald Trump that Disney needs to make it great again by not changing unless it involves bringing back old attractions. I'll also inform you that Disneyland WAS finished and should've been declared finished when Indiana Jones opened in 1995.

Changing Maelstrom to Frozen may have been bad, but it definitely wasn't as controversial a change as turning Disneyland California's Tower of Terror into the Guardians of the Galaxy ride. With maelstrom's change, they took a ride that Disney isn't completely known for and changed it, so it isn't as bad.

I know people look at what happened to Maelstrom as shameful because "It's a PR jig to pull people into the Norway" but I always take it more insulting as a Norwegian myself who has never been to my ancestral homelands in Scandinavia. When I went there for the first time back on '05, and my second and last time in '08, watching the "Spirit of Norway" video at the end always touched something in my soul, connecting me to my heritage that now is removed for a beaten pulp that once was a dead horse that even the little girls that watched Frozen in theaters call 'overdone.'

@@hedgehog3180 uh. Dude. You do realise there's such a thing as um...I don't know, immigrants? Expats? People who were born on their country's soil but had to move for one reason or another? Right? Apparently No, because otherwise you wouldn't be so close minded. Either that or you're one of those pricks who believe that if someone dares move to another ountry despite loving their home that they're a traitor to their own home land. Just because they don't live in their home country doesn't mean it isn't their home. Even if they had to leave it because of circumstances. Source, I'm a South African expat who had to move because of the stock market crash. And I've been living between South Africa and the Far East for almost 11 years. So, technically by your logic, I'm not a "real" South African either, because I didn't stay in South Africa. Even if me and my family would've lost everything and starved to death because the industry my family was in went to jackshit because it was the bloody stock market crash. Which ofcourse meant we had to find work else where. But even then we stayed loyal to our country and still loved her as much as anyone else born a South African, whether it be on South African soil or to South African parents. Same with this person, you never know their story and how he ended up there, but if he's born on Norwegian soil and/or to Norwegian parents, he's a Norwegian. Regardless of if he grew up in Norway or not. I mean, he definitely loves his country as his own, and loves it as much as anyone else on Norwegian soil. I can definitely see that. The love you can have for your home is one that is unique and indescribable. But just because he doesn't know as much as you about his home doesn't mean he should be denied the right to love it and claim it as his home.

They were hidden away and I always loved to find them. I, however, loved them for whatever reason. I loved to look at them as a child, because they were so odd. I hadnt seen or thought about them for years. Seeing them again made me weep 🤣 her hate of them made me smile with affection for them. I agree with everyone though. This was one of the hardest rides to see close since it was very special to my family who rode it each time we went to EPCOT. Considering the spectacular work imagineers can do I feel like a Frozen attraction could have still held the spirit of EPCOT in representing different cultures yet they just chose a complete cash in on the Frozen IP. The ride itself is a very good dark flume ride but it lacks the charm and also the original spirit of EPCOTs vision, yet that is an increasing trend in recent years at that park...
