From what I get out of it, it's apparently the company policy not to open equipment for any reason. If it's something they can't open up to properly secure for shipping like this, then they probably shouldn't list those items as shipping on ebay, and sell them for pick-up in-store only.
It's pretty sad when folks can install apps on their smartphones, learn how to use them, send text and emails, but don't know how to operate a screwdriver! Obviously they can do it. They just don't give a crap about their customers. It is all about money! Glad you are holding them accountable. Hope you get feeling better soon!
I found out about those screws the hard way. When I bought my first console; a top of the line 1959 RCA Orthophonic AM/FM radio stereo record changer, I layed it on it's back in the back of my SUV where the changer scratched up the gold leaf RCA Vctor logo inside the mohogany cover.. smh I even heard it fall out on the way home. That was 15 years ago but I still have that console.
There are also other items that need to have anchoring screws turned down that people likely do not know about, ignore or are too lazy. Hammond Tonewheel organs being a very important example. Need to have the Tone Generator bolts locked down. Even the "professional" piano dealer who delivered mine did not do that. Short distance, have not noted any problems, but ... could have been.
Even if someone had never seen a console/record changer before, and just seeing the bounce that the turntable has it's not something you find out the "hard way" it's lack of "common sense" because even before you loaded it, I'm quite sure you looked at it, and would have seen the way it was made. So it's nothing to "learn the hard way" about, it's "common sense", or plain "stupidity". That's like saying I found out the "hard way" that I look both ways before crossing the street because I got hit by a car. (rolling eyes) ...
I didn't look at it that closely before loading it in the dark at 10pm. I didn't see how it was made. I was tired after driving 3 hours. The seller helped me load it after an hour of him being very chatty so I was tired. I just wanted to start driving the 3 hours home. It was the first time owning anything like this. Did I notice the bounce? No, I didn't. Am I stupid and have no common sense? I would say yes if I had taken the time to examine the changer closely or had some experience. I didn't expect it to completely fall out like it did. So, I suppose I must be a big, dumb, stupid goof though you probably know everything about anything; never having to learn anything the hard way in your life due to being all knowing, at all times.
I had an incident with a Garrard RC60 the tonearm spindle broke in shipping I sent it back and bought a RC80. I cleaned it up and put new motor mounting grommets and now it’s working almost perfectly.
Happy Easter....😊...I have learned a lesson about this though You... you made me more aware of them.... sending it back is one thing... received something you waited for...to come to you damaged 😮
All i know is the wins i get are overwrapped and thats a good thing. But those are not what you got shipped. This is too easy of instructions and they should have done that. Its not like its a full breakdown. Its simple customer service. If i had done that shipping to my customers... id never stay in business. That would have pissed me off as well.
I have dealt with goodwill with all kinds of things similar to your situation. They dont do anything, nothing, and they dont know anything about anything they sell, especially the williamete store your dealing with.
Hey Bryan, what I hate is when you see something you like on eBay and the seller says "Ask any questions before you bid" then you ask them something about their item and they respond with "I'm sorry, but the item is packaged for shipment." I've enjoyed your vids RTPnut for over 10 years now, thanks for taking the time to post!. Hope you feel better. Back when I was buying these, I just asked them to place extra padding in the record changer compartment between the turntable and the lid, since I assumed they wouldn't turn any screws. My biggest problem is when I repeatedly in a Brief and Kind Way, have a template packing request email I send out asking for At Least 1 inch of soft padding between all 6 sides of the item and the cardboard shipping box. Still frequently, even with 78 rpm albums, they will ship it in a Skin Tight box, sometimes even stretching the box slightly to force the item inside, no padding at all. 78s get smashed, and plywood phono cases get crushed and/or splintered - I had one phono's 4 sides of the lower half of the plywood case literally fall outwards, front, rear, left, and right, when I lifted the lid. . .
My sincere sympathies. I have run into idiotic rules and regulations incompetently applied just like this SOOO MANY times over the years by morons that have made simple situations and requests into costly infuriating nightmares. I have done exactly what you did, giving simple instructions that were blown off by stupid uncaring people... $57? One of my situations was a $700 Denon Turntable, destroyed in shipping.
I had the same problem/result after i bought a sony HP-17 (from 1964) which was located at las Vegas and needed to be sent to the UK. Upon arrival i discovered that the whole case had been broken, and required to be glued back together also the 'trim' peices on each corner were smashed and had to be swapped with some off of a Sony reel to reel tape recorder.
If it was too much for them to comprehend the two shipping screws (because people may be afraid of screws), they could have stuffed the inside with bubble pack and at least given it a fighting chance! There still may have been damage because bubble pack doesn't always compress the way we want it, but it would have been better than letting the table bounce around. Also, sheesh! What kind of shipping did that undergo to poke a hole like that? Did they take it off road through Moab, or take it on the Dakar Rally?!!!

the least goodwill could have done on this record player was to have put a big wad of newspaper and cardboard between the lid and turntable for cushion. that might have prevented the damage that happened.
I once drove to the back of a Goodwill to donate a commercial grade projector for presentations, worth about $600, it was a bit heavy, after trying to convince one of the sleepy workers to help me unload it, he promptly grumbled then flipped it into a dirty bin of used jeans, dirty fisher price toys and probably got damaged based on the cracking sound
I once purchased a mint condition 20” Panasonic Tau on eBay and it arrived completely wrecked with damage from piss poor packing. That was the end of CRT purchases on eBay
I feel that many sellers dont like being told how to pack and ship items. I been buying lots of vintage vhs, and beta vcrs on ebay, and some will package the way i tell them, and some have refunded my money and messaged me saying i dont think youll be happy with my packing. Its upsetting because i pay a good price for a vcr, as well as tbe shipping, and so many ship via the USPS and they are the worse for handling packages. My preference is UPS. These old units have very brittle plaxtic that can easily be broken. I hate having to send a long message on how to pack and ship after purchase but this stuff is hard to come by, and is not that cheap. Sorry to hear this happeded to you. Hope they cone through and give you your money back.
Hi Bryan. I can sympathize with your being sick. I took the flu shot as I always do this year and caught a strain of the flu, not once, but twice, that was immune to the vaccine. Seeing the damage done to that classic VM player brings back bad memories of a (#$%^&*() that told me he was an expert shipper. The turntable I received was totally destroyed because he not only was a piece of crap shipper but tied nothing down. This was a Pioneer belt drive turntable and the platter came loose, wrecked the tonearm as well as destroying the dust cover. When I filed a complaint to get my money back he had conveniently closed his eBay account and moved on, probably under another name. It took a while but eBay finally refunded my money. I hope you get to feeling better soon.
I wonder what will happen with 1210 AM in Philly? Will they change the format, shut the down and return the license to the FCC and or sell the station? And Or sell the land of the 1210 transmitter ? what do you folks think?
Shame such a nice player got destroyed. I hope you get all your money back and get to keep it and fix it. Especially since you give them instruction of how to prevent such a thing. The fact that anyone would just ignore with a lame excuse such simple shipping instructions,, blows my mind… why bother selling it? When I sell anything on eBay I pack it as well as humanly possible so crap like this doesn’t happen. Some folks are just useless.
Exactly. If you are selling something at least know the basics of packing that item. Asking then to back out the motor board springs is not as they say "disassemble". They are just thick as shit self righteous charity hawkers
I hate when something gets smashed in the mail do to poor packing. Luckily i have been pretty lucky with only having a couple of items being destroyed. The only item i got from shop goodwill was a top loader VCR. They put in a box with no packing materials of any kind. So i took some pictures and said i would like a refund and would send the unit back if needed. Well i got response and this is what I got sorry about your iteam here is your refund and no need to send it back. I will talk to they people in working with the packages.
a zip-tied piece of a pool noodle or even a wad of newspaper around and over the spindle would have been better than nothing and may have prevented the hole in the top. boomers like me remember that these screws need to be tightened for shipping even for 5 miles across town. not hard to do. phononut and i pack the same way. solid enough to fall from a 20-story building with no damage. phononut's rant about sorry packing by ebay sellers is the same as mine. pisses us off at sorry packing jobs we see.
That’s sad. Rick Thomas from Obsolete Video Services made a video on how not to shipment a U-Matic VCR. I saw that video and it was disappointing. So Rick made a rant about it, and what he showed was the Sony U-Matic from the 1990’s was damaged. But in another video, he did fixed it and got it working.

Look at the bright side; it could've arrived in much worse condition. I've had them where the changer bouncing up and down broke the wooden plinth under it, and the changer was flopping around inside causing all sorts of damage. I even had an all-metal player arrive with a bent case, the entire thing was warped. Yours is saveable. But since this is a one-tube wonder, what are you going to use for a cartridge?
To bad you do not live in the NY area. My wife and I will be moving to Florida on a permanent basis. We are not taking most of our collections with us. We will have about 300 yes 300 record players and radios to sell to one person as a huge lot. Keep your eyes open on the web when the time comes.
Bryan, have you bought record players from Goodwill auctions before? Have they followed these instructions? I was thinking that Goodwill might consider touching a screwdriver to an item counts as servicing an item. Something Goodwill has never done. Don't forget Goodwill is a big corporation, or nonprofit, whatever they want to call themselves. Corporations, and big nonprofits, have strict policies, they won't break. It's different if you are dealing with a small private seller, on ebay, or Etsy. They would be more likely to comply with these instructions. Maybe they have more vintage record players to sell, and appreciate the advice. Or, maybe they had sold another record player, to another customer, with the same kind of damage, and didn't know why it happened. Hope you feel better, Bryan, do you have allergies?
hello that really sucks what happened to you it is very sad that people that sell an item do not do the right thing i hope that you get a full refund and do not buy from this seller and it is their loss for being stupid i have a question if i may ask i am wondering if you ever saw a 78 rpm record player that has a metal swing arm to the left rear of the unit and you put a stack of records on the turntable and then at the end of each record the tip of the arm moves and wedges between the records and swings them off the turntable and then resets till the next record ends then it starts that cycle again thank you and feel better very soonand all the best and i hope that you get result in your favor for this issue you have
This kind of stuff doesn't even go to the store. It's held and posted on their eb store, where they can get more money then they could charge for it in the real store.

The reason what you describe as with no one these days wanting to do their jobs and standing around on their cell phones is because they know they can't get fired in the wokeness we live in today, and if they do get asked to do their jobs all they have to do is throw out that "card" and everyone agrees with them, and they either wind up taking a qualified person job, or receive a huge settlement or both...
And people like to make these policies to encourage stupidity. It's our policy to not do anything and we're going to make sure of that. You know that just sucks how people just don't want to take a little time to unscrew something. I've seen those transit screws on a lot of those record players just like you. And you know people just make a policy of well we're too lazy to do anything. And then they're so stubborn about it and they wonder why they get bad ratings. I hope you got your money back on this one.
You are trying to tell people that don’t know and care less about doing something minor that would have helped the situation. The goodwill is a big place and they employ people that are trying to get their lives back together, or at least try. The fact they couldn’t do something basic just shows they haven’t learned anything about being employed. Management of goodwill not much better at showing people how to work.
