My first camera almost 10 years ago was the a6000. It has its flaws but it helped me grow to where I am now. Good memories and a great camera.

This guy find cheap cameras that rock and gives no-BS reviews. Gotta love that.

I would go for the GX80/85 as even more affordable GX9 replacement at 95% capability, as 16 MP is fine for most and the BW simulations are quite decent. Plus stabilized 4k! A bargain at around 200 EUR. The Leica TL2 looks interesting though for deeper pockets.

I have the Canon 40D (& 50D). I prefer the 50D as it's 15mp, but both are awesome. They feel & look very professional. I got them off eBay years ago, & dirt cheap. Incredible image quality. These cameras are tanks (heavy😅). Absolute beast of a camera! Great camera to learn on. I was inspired by seeing the photos of a friend's 20D (only 6.3mp) many, many years ago & never forgot, it was THAT good!

Just picked up a 40d, the color SOOC is beautiful. Reminds me of the 5d Classic (40d came out around the same time) and I love that the RAW files are only like 11mb. Pretty barebones/basic but that's what I love about it. I think I got mine for like $70 in gorgeous condition. Highly recommend!

I still have and use my Sony a6000. I see no reason to stop using it. I picked a Canon 5d classic for $300 with the 50mm 1.8. Outstanding camera and lens.

Hi Mattias, great video! Long time back I owned the Canon 40D, fantastic camera, loved the colours in the JPEG files. Great for landscape photos!

I sold my GX9 (to MPB) last week having owned it for a couple of years. It's a great little camera - I recommend you add an L bracket to make it easier to hold - and produces some very lovely RAW files that are easy to push and edit. I rarely used the EVF but found the camera to be a little gem. I sold it as I use Canon for work and needed a bit of extra cash to help purchase equipment I needed. Since it left I've been thinking that I'll either get a Ricoh, should a GR iv come along sometime soon, or a used GX9 when I'm flusher after the high season for bookings.

Welcome back. I really did love the Samsung EX2F for the features. My only gripe was the handling. I kept knocking the WIFI button which is now defunct anyway and it totally stops the camera from being useful until you cancel it. lol. It it weren't for that I would be loving it. I traded it in for the Ricoh GRD IV (small sensor version) and that worked out better. Just lacks the zoom. But my Fuji X30 handles those duties.

Finally you are back with these kind of videos about older gear!! Awesome! Nice list. a6000 can be had for very cheap. I would say it kind of served me okay up to this point but it let me down a few times, mostly when it comes to overheating and not even starting up until a get out the battery and put back in. I mean not only in video, but also during casual photo shooting. It has nice IQ with a fast prime, pretty good AF, and can be tweaked very easy to remove the 30min video limit (early Sony bodies are all capable of that playmemories app tweak.) Side note: are you planing to review some first gen Panasonic bodies like the S1 and S5? Would be nice to hear your opinion about that system. Lenses seem expensive but with nice vintage glass and that huge EVF and grip..seems promising...such a shame only the S1 has tilt screen, It drives me mad all this craze with articulating screens, it is like everyone only cares about vloggers these days....

Btw, one thing I forgot to mention about the a6000. The focus distance displayed while in manual for zone focus street photography 👌

I have the Canon EOS 40D and I love it. I use a 50mm ƒ1.8 and a 24mm ƒ2.8 with it, and since the 24mm is a pancake lens, the camera becomes quite compact overall for a DSLR. The whole kit cost me about €200 a couple of years ago. And I used to have a Samsung EX1… but got stolen, unfortunately. Great roundup, Mattias! I've been missing this kind of videos of yours. Miss these videos. Over in Australia, cost of used cameras has gone up significantly depending on the models. I was able to get a used GX9 a couple of years ago for around half of RRP. Absolutely brilliant camera. Although I am using a Pen-F a little more which I got for around the same price. I used to have an a6000 but gave it away to a friend. Great camera, but I feel it's ability to do so much with it's PlayMemories camera apps kind of took the fun away from photography. I own two Samsung mirrorless cameras, the Nx300 and Galaxy NX. What I loved about the Galaxy NX was the fact you had Android running on it, making it a giant phone with an APSC sensor. It also had a slot for a sim card for data usage only, and because it ran android you could download photo editing software and social media apps making editing and posting on the go a breeze. Definitely well ahead of it's time.

If you don't put of what camera did you use, I wouldn't never guess that NX1 looks lovely on my phone. Truly one kind of camera. Sony A6000 was so popular back then and after a decade it's still a fine camera. Watching this video made my own memories rushing in, it's a bittersweet feeling 😅 Thanks for the video, mattias

I bought those last month the Olympus XZ2, the Panasonic GX8, the sigma dp2 just to have fun … and all of them make me want go out and shoot. As I live in a sunny island in the South Pacific … I tend to use the dp2 a little more than the 2 other one. Thanks for this video.

A6000 is amazing, E mount is super versatile and you can find some third party manual or AF lenses at a very good price.

Earlier this year, I was able to get a new GX9 for the new price it was when it was released. It is this camera that freed me from the X100 hype especially since I have the 14, 20, and 12-32 pancakes.

Thank you for this video. Have a Panasonic GX9 and love it. Small. Lightweight. Being a Panasonic it is loaded with video features. Why Panasonic refuses to put an audio jac into these small bodies I don’t know. Has the L monochrome D B&W jpeg. The best. A cheaper alternative is the GX85. For almost the same price is the GX8. It was the photography flagship body. Has the flip screen I don’t like. Weather sealed. IBIS. Audio jac (2.5mm I think). A little bigger and heavier than the GX85/9 but full featured. Found a cheap body at the local camera store. Don’t see this sold on Craigslist. Obviously a Panasonic M43 fan. Mask On Nurse Marty(Ret)

My first DSLR was a 40D, took alot of my favorite images with it.

I see already some shouts on the GX9 in the comments. It’s good body, to me little bit to small. But it becomes a really outstanding camera in combination with the 15mm 1.7 panaleica.

That Samsung NX1 is flipping amazing and the 16-50mm F2.0-2.8 was ahead of its time. My cousin had one before photography became a profession for me and I always wanted one. But when I decided to take photography seriously, Samsung was unfortunately 5 years out of the race so I went with Fujifilm for my Pro-Kit. Damn shame.

I got lx100 for less than $250ish. Love the form factor especially if you are like me, hate bringing big and heavy zoom lenses, 12MP all in one (24-75 f3.4-5.6 FF equivalent or 16-50 f2.5-4 APSC equivalent) for just 400g.

hmm ya but.. do they film 8k raw and have bird eye auto-focus ? Because i really need that. I haven't seen a bird in years, except for pigeons, and i never shoot video, but I saw a ton a reviews and if they don't have those 2 things the camera sucks, and it's dead. btw you need to try a nikon d800e at some point.

Honestly, I think the GX9 is the perfect camera for the people who want the GRIII but hate on it for having no EVF, a fixed lens, no flash, and being expensive for a point and shoot. The GR get a lot of bad press compared to the X100, because people don't really understand what it's for and expect it to be a good beginner camera, when really you need to know what you're doing and what you're giving up to get the best out of the specialised high performance design. It's understandable, I would be pretty mad if I bought a Formula 1 car and it didn't have any space for my groceries and couldn't go over speed bumps. 😂 Someone needs to hype the GX9 as an X100 alternative. It's compact, the auto focus isn't significantly worse, and you can do recipes on it too - You can get crazy with saturation, contrast, and white balance until your image is brown and "filmic" on any camera really.

Sony a6000 is/was terrific won numerous photo awards switched to a Sony A7 and life is good

What do you think about olympus ep5 vs ep 1,2,3 boddies? I find the first gen more joyful to use but don't know why. The 5 is 4 times more expensive and more expensive than em5 m2, a bit cheaper than gx9 and I find it strange

I'm still looking for a replacement for my Foveon sensor based Sigmas (DPQs) . Unfortunately I haven't found any camera until now worth the change. 😕

How about the original Sony A7? Just picked one up barely used, with a warranty, for £295. I know it's pretty old now but still full frame, mirrorless, can adapt lots of vintage lenses to it.

Samsung colors look good! Hope they come back soon. Japan is STILL the camera making extraordinaire but it would have been nice seeing other huge companies from other countries trying their luck and hopefully causing a consumer friendly market disruption.

If you can't get a GX9, get the GX80! It is the most similar, apart from having 16mpx and no tilt EVF. The GX7 is a great choice but it is not to the same level as the GX80.

Can we still get your photos setting from your old videos with membership?

I've had my Canon 5D Classic for 6 years now and I am still in the honeymoon phase with it. My 6D mark ii just collects dust at this point. I will NEVER part with my 5D Classic because I find it that wonderful.

Can you do one for non beggines. Desperately trying to find a small Leica alternative. Budget is the biggest hurdle.

Most of these are also great travel cameras. If you lose them, it's no big deal. But the images will be nicer than almost any smartphone.

Sony menus can be mostly bypassed with correctly setting up the Fn menu panels to things you use, customising some buttons but also selecting “For Viewfinder “ in the display menu. This works as an extended Fn menu so you change almost anything. I only go into the menu to format the card. The video in the A6000 got an improvement after a firmware update added AVCS and a higher bitrate.

Why do you hate fully articulated screens so bad if many of your shots are vertical ? For this same reason I love them. If I’d shoot horizontal maybe over 90% of the time, I would love a tilt screen, but for me you just can’t beat the ability to use articulated screen for shooting vertical photos, which for me is maybe around 50% of the time

Nothing beats Sony RX1. I bought mine for 900 euros, five years ago. Otherwise, Canon 6D with a good lens. Maybe Sigma Art 50mm or 35mm.

and acutually the EF-Ms like the M5 and M6, or even M6 II (which I think is almost 80% or the R7 but about 40% of the price) are cheap and easy to find, and the lenses are cheap too, both EF-M , sigma DN DC and EF lenses. I think that is well worthy taking a look than the dead system like Samsung NX. NX is more for a collector than for normal users who trying to get started on a tight budget

The Leica TL2 and Samsung EX2F suffer, in my own experience, from very unreliable internal metering. I'd therefore take them off the list for photography beginners.

NX1 is very hard to find, TL2 is 1000$ and above. EX2F is almost impossible to find one below 200$ , and usually more expensive than LX7. I feel like LX100 ii and NX500 fits better in this list

The GX9 is more like north of $800 US.
