Thousands of miles west of mainland United States you'll find the legendary paniolo - the cowboys of Hawaii. What began with a gift of a few cows and a bull to the King in the 1700s has grown into a ranch community that's passed down their hunting, cowboying, and fishing styles for generations. YETI Ambassador Chris Malloy visits the Big Island to learn from the legends.

I think this is a wonderful way of life. I was raised living off the land and learned so much from my grandparents and parents in Ohio. You might not have a lot of money but you always have what you need and family are close and help one another. I miss that so much now.

5:11 - "I think the common thread in these ranching communities is tradition, family, productivity, stewardship and the dream of passing it on to the next generation" Very wise words I will carry with me.

Just some info: In 1832, King Kamehameha III sent for help to California to teach the Hawaiians how to handle the wild cattle and to learn horsemanship. The help came in the form of three Mexican vaqueros (cowboys) who taught the Hawaiians roping, herding, breaking and other skills. To this day, the paniolo traditions are still practiced, while remaining firmly rooted in the Mexican vaquero heritage.

This short nicely compliments the Paniolo O Hawai'i documentary from the late 90s (if anyone would like to watch more about Paniolo history).

I lived nearby for a decade....breaks my heart to hear the woman talking about how “ times are changing “ and the locals with SO MUCH HISTORY & UNIQUE HERITAGE understand that with ALL the NEW PEOPLE moving in it’s THEM THE LOCALS who will have to ADAPT.... the beautiful town referred to WAIMEA was becoming famous when I moved over for becoming a MARTHA STEWART community.....Quaint as defined by ALIENS with zero history in the islands in general and less in Paniolo Culture...I recall as if yesterday people cheering the arrival of McDonalds, later a STARBUCKS...I literally saw what irresponsible, naive, arrogant, spoiled rich clueless indifferent idiots DO TO PRISTINE UNIQUE FRAGILE COMMUNITIES to make it “ more better, kinda like home “. The place they moved away from to ESCAPE to the peaceful serenity of untouched small town rural Hawaii. I won’t go back....I left because I witnessed the incremental, steady, loss of identity as each new group of malahini took more & more.....making what WAS ONE OF A KIND.....LIKE EVERYWHERE ELSE... Tragic REPETITION ONCE AGAIN for the endlessly maligned Native Hawaiian Paniolo Culture, disgracefully disfigured and cheaply transformed into Theme Park like mediocrity...Gone but not forgotten....it broke my heart when it finally became clear that I was powerless to END THE GREED DRIVEN NUMBING OF INTELLIGENT COMMUNITY PLANNING.....I witnessed a motivated group of ambitious soulless cyphers recklessly destroy the very quality of place they claim called them to relocate to & renew their hideously shallow lives. Any REASON, MOTIVATION, EXPLANATION, PURPOSE, EXCUSE, STORY, etc. these monsters give for “ being of service to the local community “ is after fact “cover your ass” bullshit.....I left because I couldn’t end the consumer culture madness ...... If this Video ‘Works’ and creates an interest to see this....GO QUICKLY.....IT’S DISAPPEARING QUICKER EACH DAY.....THEY ARE TOO FAR INTO THEIR PROJECT NOW....THEY CANNOT STOP....ENJOY IT WHILE IT EXISTS....

New land development almost always coincides with new arrivals... and too often those new arrivals don’t get it or they come to adapt the land they came to instead of adapting themselves. That’s the same whether it’s New Yorkers moving to Arizona or Tennesseans moving to Hawai’i

It’s ALWAYS the ones who understand their impact, who understand the native people, the culture and who understand the need to preserve it, rather than covering it in cement… that leave. Too bad, you’re the ones we don’t mind staying. Mahalo for you’re well articulated, almost poetic, comment.
@The.Hawaiian.Kingdom
@The.Hawaiian.Kingdom Год назад
@@lukeporras1288 Not exactly the same, because Hawaiians are nearly extinct and the Hawaiian Kingdom is not part of the US but rather illegally occupied by the US since 1893. In our case, it’s war crimes and international law violations being committed, not just people moving to another state.
@lukeporras1288
@lukeporras1288 Год назад
@@The.Hawaiian.Kingdom You can make that argument, but didn't it all start with a bunch of rich American planters moving to Hawaii and monopolizing business? When they grew enough in number, they overthrew the Kingdom and petitioned to join the United States. At least, that is my limited understanding of Hawaii's history.

I never realized there were ranches/cowboys in Hawaii. It just never occurred to me! Also, 2:33 - MOUNTAINS WITH SNOW? IN HAWAII?! I need to go there. Because, clearly, I am clueless. It's great to see there are still some real men in the world! I would also have loved to hear more of the music at the end.

Please be cognizant that the specific mountain (which is actually a dormant volcano) is considered one of the most sacred sites in all of Hawai’i to the Hawaiian people & it should never be treated as tourists playground.

it only took 3 Mexican Vaqueros to start the Legend of the Paniolo. Please watch Kuana Torres musical video of the song NA VAQUEROS, it narrates in song form, the real story of the paniolos that left their mark on the native Hawaiian way of life. Hollywood Cowboys got nothing on the paniolos., they quickly learned the way of the Mexican Vaquero.
