In this video I compare the Yeti Roadie 24 to the Yeti Roadie 20 and then test how the new Yeti Roadie 24 fits in your vehicle and how much beer it will hold!!
I was looking for a video of someone who would do these 2 comparisons. Thank you, so much for actually showing how much the 2:1 ratio held can to ice. Can't wait to get my Yeti 24.
I know this is a year old video, but I appreciate it. I was considering the 24 and didn't even realize it didn't have a drain plug. Thats the deal breaker for me . . . I use the drain to empty water out when i add more ice so my food doesn't get soggy. I also appreciate having the drain when I'm cleaning the inside when I use it for fish or other things that get it dirty on the inside. I just use a scrubbie with soap and water with a hose and makes for very easy clean up and drying. Looks like the handle and latches are a nice upgrade on the 24 over the 20 . . . and a little extra capacity, being lighter and taller are all great. But for my needs, I've gotta have that drain, so I'm sticking with the 20 that I already have. Thanks again for the review.
I purchased the yeti 24, I didn’t think I would miss the drain plug, but I did, yeti almost had it, but leaving the drain plug out was a big mistake, I know you can tip it with the new Handel underneath, but if you are still loaded up and just want to drain some water out, the 24 is inconvenient, but I do like the strap handle over the aluminum Handel definitely an improvement there, but I find that I use the 20 over the 24 more often.
I think that's the biggest complaint of the 24 is the lack of a drain plug. It works for me but not for everyone so I understand. Thanks for checking out the video and the comment. JD
I wonder if that's where yeti squeezed out some extra insulation efficiency. Doesn't seem like a drain plug would be significant hear transfer but someone mentioned that it is.
The 24 doesn't have the slots for the cup holders, from holder, cargo straps or locking cable and lock. While the 20 had them and the ability to do all of those things.
Finally broke down and bought a Roadie 24. What sold me was the ease of the latches to open and close. Much more friends and family friendly. You can actually do it one handed plus the height. You can put a standing liquor bottle (forget wine) in it as well. Drain plug is not an issue for me since I don't need but a day or two max of ice retention.
Deciding between the Dometic Patrol 20 and the Yeti Roadie 24... So similar yet so different at the same time. Drain plug is a big plus and minus.. but Yeti height is also a great way to stack and seat height is a bonus.
GREAT video my friend! I keep coming back to your channel for these honest Yeti reviews and comparisons. Keep em coming! And thanks for not forgetting to give Jake some ice. Love to hear him crunching on it 😁 Stay safe brother
I try to make these reviews realistic unlike so many others I see on RU-vid. Just an average guy's opinion on how well they function and perform. Really appreciate you checking out the channel and watching these videos. I will make sure Jake has plenty of ice!! JD
Hey Paul thank you for that feedback. Absolutely there's a weight difference but I didn't focus on that in the review because the 24 holds more than the 20. I can tell you when the 24 is loaded down it has some weight to it, manageable but it is heavy. Hope that helps, I know that wasn't a real definitive answer. Thanks for the feedback and comment. JD
Thanks for the video, I was wondering how many beers with ice the roadie could hold. And the lack of a drain plug is not an issue for me, this is a fairly small cooler and the handle on the bottom should make draining it a breeze. I definitely want one.
I just got another tundra 35 to go along with the 24 if I need something with a drain but don't want to bring the massive tundra haul. Roadie 24 is great for chilling your wine!
I still have my roadie so I use that occasionally. Honestly, my go to cooler now is the flip 18. Versatile and a little lighter and easier to carry around. Thanks for the comment. JD
I find confusing that Yeti states on the webpage that the roadie 24 can hold only 18 cans and the hooper flip 18 can hold 20 cans with a 2:1 ice ratio (both are supposed to hold 24lb of ice alone). They have changed the capacity from now. I have had both coolers and that's not the case. Thanks for the video, it helped me decide what size to get.
i just literally found a roadie 24 on the side of the road looks like it feel off the back of a truck and has virtually zero damage to it besides a couple scratches how lucky am I
The lack of drain plug is a deal breaker for me. Which sucks because I love my Yeti 65, 45, and 35. I went with an Orca 20 since the Yeti 20 was discontinued.
You will like your Orca 20. Only issue I have is that it can be tough to open especially one handed. Build quality is excellent, ice retention is great, Made in the USA does not hurt anything either.
Honestly, I don't know. A very original design and the 24 had some improvements to that original design. Most likely driven by declining sales would be my guess. Thanks for checking out the video and for the comment. JD
JD I’ve been watching this cooler, actually thought I might get it for Christmas but didn’t which is fine lol gives me time to do more research. My wife and I have no kids, it’s just us two and we love our cheap little cooler and bag cooler we have (both of them Walmart specials) for lake days and the beach of course. But we are looking at starting to camp more and upgrading quality with a yeti. Would you recommend the 24 over a yeti bag cooler?
Hey Wolfman, personally, I'm not a fan of the cooler bags other than the flip series (love the flip 18). I think the openings on the bags are too narrow but the flip series all have square (ish) openings and gives you easy access. The hard coolers are great but weight quickly becomes an issue so it really depends on the type of camping you are doing. If you're driving up to your campsite then I think the 24 hard cooler would be awesome. If you're doing any type of hiking to your campsite I would look at some lighter options for sure. You can't really go wrong with any of their coolers, you just have to get the one that fits your application. I used cheap coolers most of my life and love my Yeti. Opinions vary on this of course so just my opinion. Thanks for the question and hoped this helped. JD
I think the loss of a drain plug, No padlock holes or a slot for a security bracket are poor decisions by Yeti I get that they are targeting a different market than the Tundra I have the older roadie and its a great cooler for road trips and over night camps its my work lunch box and on the odd occasion a seat and step
I know it isn't a fair comparison, but what're your thoughts on the 24 versus the bigger 35 or 45? I'm looking to purchase my first Yeti cooler, and I can't decide which one I should be looking at. Thanks for your input!
Hey Nick, thanks for the question. My honest opinion is the 24 is a "portable" cooler and the entry level hard cooler from Yeti. If you are considering a larger cooler, I would 100% look at the Tundra Haul. Yes, it's a bit more expensive but the wheels make it so worth it. A Yeti 35 or 45 is going to be a heavy cooler when full and you would utilize the tundra haul more often because it is easier to transport. So if you are looking for a smaller cooler, the 24 is great or even the flip 18. If you think you need a larger cooler (and the extra space is always nice to have), I would seriously consider the tundra haul. Best cooler yeti has made in my opinion if you are going rotomolded and not soft sided. Hope this helps Nick and thank you for the question/comment.
My roadie 20 will build pressure and I have to use the drain plug to release it just to open the lid, how do you deal with that with the 24 without a drain plug?
I will say that as an Orca 20 (Cowboys edition) owner, I like it a lot, BUT the latches are not easy to open. Kids, women, elderly, may have issues with opening. Not the best family cooler in my opinion.
I didn't do an ice retention test but I have found most of Yeti's rotomolded coolers to be about equal in terms of ice retention. Both are great coolers! The 20 is discontinued but people are still selling them on Ebay. JD
I drive for work all day in 100-125°F heat and the 24 fits behind my passenger seat in my 2017 honda civic sedan. I do have to move the front seat up and it fits in my trunk. It’s just me though so no one will complain!
I currently have the 20 and was looking to upgrade to the 24. My main haul is the 16oz pounders for craft beer. The 20 will hold 16 without compromising ice. I’m guessing the 24 would hold 20? Also, is the 24 less insulated and that’s why it weighs less?
Yeah some people don’t like it. I have really enjoyed it and use it pretty regularly. Maybe take a look at one in a store so you can see it? The roadie 20 is a great cooler and the original so I get it. If you’re after one look on eBay. JD
if they only made the 24 with wheels like the 48...I wanted a smaller cooler but with the same wheel set up as the 48....that stinks...I have the 20 and like it a lot but the 24 would be a little bigger ...not sure if I like the missing handle because I am used to it but evolution is the name of the game for Yeti, except for wheels and a handle
The roadie 20 loses tons of insulation through the metal handle. This isn’t as noticeable when the contents are ice but if you stick something cooler like Arctic Ice 5 degree F Packs in the handle is very cold. The roadie 24 avoids insulative loss at the handle and this is why it is superior in ice retention.
Bought the 24 in sagebrush. Love it. The tall size and handle are big improvements. Had the Rtic 20 and it was too big and heavy for the little it held. I do like the latches but still never understood why so many complain about the T rex ones
Hey Matt, I really like the 24 as well and have enjoyed using it so far. I agree the T Rex latches never bothered me. Thanks for checking out the video and for the comment. JD
Thanks for the review , even though I’m not looking for a yeti I love that you took the time to show how the beers fit in. The cooler I’m looking into is 25 quarts and all the other videos don’t take the time to see what can actually fit inside. RC
@@JDOffline thanks, I didn’t plan on needing it or a tie down but wanted to ask. I’ve pretty much narrowed it down to this or the larger soft canyon cooler
@@JDOffline yeah I find that with some brands the specs are inaccurate. Also when it's so close you just don't know until you try. Also factor in the size of the front seat person. Sorry, I guess I commented "outloud".
@@JDOffline Thanks for replying. I gave Yeti a call. They could not verify but did say that the strap is 1” wide. Molle opening is about 1” so hopefully it will work. Planning to get the Roadie at REI with my 20% off coupon and some gift cards. I like my Ozark Trail coolers from WalMart and Coho from Costco, but sometimes I want to feel fancy with a Yeti. 😄
Thank you for that feedback. I think if I moved my front seats up a bit it would fit but it sure didn’t as the front seats were. Glad to hear it fits in your truck. JD
just get back from bass pro to buy this cooler and yes I'm a beer man partyer , the 24 they have mit fit 8 beers on bottom role 6 pack with 2 more firmly pushed in and second role as well , after that very little room for ice , wonder if what I was looking at was a nock off , hmmmm, , idea was 20 pack for me 4 to 8 pack wine coolers for the wife with a few days of it staying cool
Sounds like a knock off for some reason. I've heard there's some out there that are hard to tell from the originals. I typically only buy from the Yeti website. JD
Great question!! I never tested the ice retention of the two coolers. Based on previous tests I've done (yeti vs yeti) they always seem to last about the same amount of time as long as your comparing the rotomolded coolers, ice is equal, conditions equal, etc. JD
I have to say i wear carhartt shirts i own yeti coolers love budlight beer in cans and have a lab but he is a gold color jaja are all yeti fans the same?!!! Lol
Thank you! Had to go through several videos just to find out if the Roadie 24 actually holds 24 cans of beer! Other people reviewing how fucking wine bottles and hot dogs fit in the fucking cooler. No body wanna see that shit! Show us the beer! Thank you sir!
