YETI's Chug Cap Threads Stripping - Why this is so Common (and How to Avoid It)

Update 1/23/2023
Someone gave us feedback after we posted this video saying that their threads stripped because they used a hot drink, and the heat made the threads more malleable, causing them to fail. If you want to use a hot drink like coffee or tea, a better lid option would be the Hot Shot lid.
If you’ve already purchased a YETI Chug Cap and have experienced this thread issue, reach out to YETI for a replacement.
Option 1: Email customerservice@yeti.com
Option 2: Submit a warranty claim on their website.

I used my Yeti for hot water and it also caused the threads to go. It lasted over a year though. The caps are so expensive to replace... Thanks for showing alternative caps though.

Sorry this happened to you too. For the price, you would hope it'd last a lot longer than that!

The hot shot cap is much better suited to hot drinks and the chug cap label states its not for hot drinks. I never had a cross threading issue but the issue I do have is that the small o-ring in the top part of the cap keeps falling out. Now that it's lost the cap is not water tight.

Great comments had similar problems with HOT liquid and plastic screw on of other brands . Now I will label accordingly each Hot or Cold container .

Exactly!!! Four months of daily use and the tread is gone. I wasn't abusing it but pour in it hot tea maybe thats the issue. It can't handle hot for long. Anyway, it was a gift and I didn't pay much. Now, buying new rambler® bottle chug cap for $13.

Sorry it happened to you too! Heat seems to be a recurring theme with the failures, so it must be the heat making the black plastic too soft and malleable.

Well, if it's the chug cap that you're using for hot liquids it's not designed to be used with them, the hot shot cap is what you need!

@bottlepro3252
@bottlepro3252 Год назад
Thanks for the comment! They're still good bottles, but you might want to consider the Magdock lid instead. The only downside of that one is that it doesn't have a handle, and which may or may not be as big of an issue depending on which size bottle you're looking to get. But other than that it's basically a better chug cap in our opinion.
@bottlepro3252
@bottlepro3252 Год назад
Yea, it shouldn't be too hard to improve the design. If they just made a Magdock lid with a handle, that'd be perfect!

Never had an issue myself, maybe some people just need to be alittle more careful.
@bottlepro3252
@bottlepro3252 Год назад
Yea, I'm sure being more careful can always help, but there have been enough people who said this happened to them during normal use, especially when using hot drinks, that I think it's more of a design issue. The lid could be redesigned some to prevent the issue from happening to so many people. For example, hydro flask's flex chug seems to have a better thread design that is more durable. Hard to tell for sure though either way, and we've had a very wide range of comments and responses on this video!

@bottlepro3252

Very weird. Was it from the threads being messed up, or something else like an issue with suction? We've had some weird things happen to us with bottle lids seeming much tighter after major elevation changes (Colorado). Must have created some suction issues from the pressure difference in the bottle vs outside.

Yeti should put torq specs on the cap. 😂 I went into the yeti store because I’ve had two chug caps fail me. Same issue. Store clerk told me it’s from over tightening. I called bullshit. I am a mechanical individual and know better. Pointed the blame on me. That’s nonsense. I called him out on it and said this is a known problem. He didn’t have much to say but admitted that there has been several complaints. I run a small business and would not point this flaw on the user. It’s clearly an issue. Own it yeti! And build a better cap. Typical corporate BS.
@jesinbeverly
@jesinbeverly Год назад
I use my Yeti with hot liquids... It's my opinion that this softens the plastic material, making the threads weaker and more prone to stripping. I've gone through three of these lids. The bottle top is fine.. I don't want to buy anymore of those. I just need the lids. BTW.. I tighten the lid to the point where it doesn't leak. No tighter.
@bottlepro3252
@bottlepro3252 Год назад
This is exactly what one other YETI customer mentioned to us, so I'm glad you left this comment. A lot of people over-tighten the lid way more than is needed, and that certainly can wear it out more. And the other customer specifically mentioned what you did about how their threads stripped when they had a hot beverage in their bottle. I wish I had tested that part of it more before posting the video, but maybe that'll be a future update.

@bottlepro3252 Год назад
Sorry to hear this. That's a lot of lids (& money). Do you put hot drinks in your YETIs? A lot of people have commented that they think the heat led to their stripped threads because it made the plastic softer.

@@bottlepro3252 very rare as in once every few months on a Saturday nothing crazy. But I do work in construction and it’s gotten knocked around a tad. They also get exposed to extreme hot and cold temps as I work outdoors which may also contribute and speed up wear and tear. But I still don’t feel that the price is justified. Lots of people take them hiking/vacationing/etc so you’d think they’d be solid. I don’t know maybe I’m doing it wrong which I’m ok with

Yea you should be good. Hot drinks seemed to be the most common thread connecting the comments from people who said it happened to them. I'm not entirely sure why there was such a high concentration of comments about the thread issue when I made this video, but the times I checked again after that I didn't see any other similar comments so if it was related to a manufacturing batch issue then maybe that was resolved too. Not sure we'll ever really know.

Do you mean the one in this link? It's the one that usually comes with YETI wide mouths that you have to completely screw on-and-off to take drinks. I do seem to remember some of their lids being in-and-out of stock recently, so maybe they just got back in stock. amzn.to/3pFqjRW

I have never experienced this problem with my chug cap , I was curious, so i looked into it after seeing this video and others and was not able to cross mine ,not that tried to hard! Thanks for the comment. We've been getting feedback that's all over the place. Some people have had this problem a few times, and some people like you have never had it haopen. And one person told us it happened to them when they were using their yeti with a hot drink and they thought the threads got soft from the heat. I'm not entirely sure.

As far as I can tell it's better now. When I made this video, a lot of the recent reviews mentioned something about that issue. But looking at the reviews now, I don't see any recent ones complaining about it. It's hard to really know for sure with reviews though. Most people I heard from who had this issue said it was related to using hot drinks, so just use cold or room-temp water and you should be good.

Lasted a year. 25 bucks for a new cap seems a little ridiculous as its made out of cheap plastic. I ordered the magnetic lid without the handle and ill try to get a replacement chug cap. Yeti is Overpriced junk. Paint on tumblers is thinly applied and scratches off if you look at it sideways. I’ve had a Stanley (green) coffee thermos for over 20 years, that has been all over the country on hunting, fishing, jobs, and hikes. There are some small dents and scratches on the unpainted surfaces, but the paint is still like new.

Yea, I tend to agree bout YETI. Most of their products are pretty good, but I'm just not sure they're THAT good to justify those prices. A lot of what you're paying for is the word "YETI" on the bottle!
@FrankRoosevelt32
@FrankRoosevelt32 Месяц назад
Yeti is def overpriced but I wouldn’t personally call it junk. Every yeti I’ve had from a function standpoint has been as durable or more durable than any other brand I’ve used. In most cases it performs better also. To be fair, paint has always been of very little concern to me, though. I didn’t buy them for the way they look.
