Yeti SB140 Review: Worth the upgrade from the SB130?

The SB140 is first up in our reviews of Yeti's new bikes. On paper, it doesn't look all that different. Out on the trail, it's a whole new beast. So what's new? Is it worth upgrading from your SB130? Stick around to find out.
CORRECTION I pooched it and misspoke. I said the stack was increased slightly. I got my figures wrong-I apologize. Too much egg nog, apparently.
As always, you can find the in-depth written article here on our website - bebikes.com/the-hub/yeti-sb14...

A lot of folks tend to ride off the back of the bike, which isn’t where you should be but it’s what people are told as new riders. Those habits just stick. Bikes like the 130 aren’t as forgiving to that riding position. Agreed that if you stay centered you’ll do great on it though.

The more I watch your videos, the more I'm liking your channel and the more I can't wait for another awesome bike review. All of your bike reviews that I watched were just on point. So PLEASE keep it going!!! I'm 6' 2" as well, with 36" inseam and 72" wingspan. I've owned a Yeti SB6 and SB100 and now I'm on the SB130 LR w/ Cascade Link and reduced 150mm fork for slightly better climbing abilities. Being 6' 2" puts us right between the size L and XL with the Yeti brand. All of the three Yeti bikes I've owned were in size Large. I'm curios what size Yeti you normally ride and why? Also what's your inseam and wingspan? The only two things that I'm not fully happy with my SB130 LR is the ultra low BB and the fact that I have to always make sure to keep my weight over the front wheel on descends to prevent a washout of the front wheeel. So I've been considering to maybe switch my SB130 LR to something different. And there's just way too many really good bikes. My other shorter travel bike that I'll be using for about 90% of my Bay Area rides is Transition Spur with stock SID and SID Lux suspension. So the bigger All Mountain bike I'll be using only once or twice a month on the more demanding trails like Santa Cruz. Unfortunately I don't do bike parks at all. Since I don't do any lifts or shuttles, climbing ability is very important for me. And because I'm not riding enough, or at least as I would like to on the more demanding tarils, my descending skills level is just average. So a confidents inspiring descender is a very important factor as well. The bikes I'm currently considering are: Yeti SB140 LR (the New 29er) Ibis Ripmo V2S Santa Cruz Hightower V2 Transition Sentinel V2 Specialized SyumpJumper EVO Alchemy Arktos 135 Any thoughts or input about the list oof bikes? Thank You!!!
@bikersedge
@bikersedge Год назад
I'm on an XL 140 here, but I've owned both L and XL in the past. I probably prefer the XL for the added stability and to get those handlebars a bit higher. Out of your list of bikes I don't think you can go wrong for the type of riding you described. I personally really like the Sentinel as it's a bit more aggressive while still riding like an all-mountain bike. The HT V3 is a solid option too for a more aggressive descender. The 140 is going to be pretty balanced and the Ripmo will be on the "trail" side of the category. I can't speak for the other two. Don't know too much about them.

Geometry is about set in stone at this point. Ideally the industry will switch from boost to super boost so we can shorter up the rear end a little, this is especially important on smaller sizes, but aside from maybe more size specific geometry, seat tubes cant really get any steeper, head tubes cant get much slacker, and reach is really a product of seat tube angle so its not gonna get much longer. Seated distance from saddle to handlebars really hasnt changed too much over the decades even though reach has gone up inches because the saddle is now much further forward on the bike.
@bikersedge
@bikersedge Год назад
It kind of appears that at least for now we've settled in on this geo. I appreciate that chainstays have been getting longer recently, but then I ride XL and they've usually been a little shorter than I like. I'm curious to see what happens over the next few years though.
@cheut
@cheut Год назад
@@bikersedge I think chainstays are the only real place where substantial progress can be made in terms of geo. Like a 430mm CS on a bike with a 430mm reach will feel way different than on a 510mm reach bike. And small bikes often have chainstays that are longer than their reach figures which must feel incredibly strange to ride. Size specific CS's will hopefully become more common so a small bike can actually have a shorter CS than its reach and longer reaches can have longer CSs so everyone is in the same place on the bike
@bikersedge

I've ridden a bike with a longer chainstay than reach and I can confirm it's super weird. I love seeing more and more size specific geo.

@bikersedge
@bikersedge Год назад
I didn’t ride a large. Most yetis fit me a little long in the seated position/cockpit but I don’t like to size down as the stack height tends to get really low and I feel like the bars are below my knees when I’m standing up on the descents. I stick with XL and shorten the stem/scoot saddle forward.

I’m currently torn and can’t decided if I should go with the 140 standard or 140 LR . I’m looking for a bike that I can take on any trail. "Better" is going to depend on your preferences and riding style. You're right that the Yeti is the better climber-It's more efficient. Even though the 140 is less racy than the older 130, I still think the Instinct feels like a more playful and poppy bike. Overall, I think they'll both be at home in the same kinds of terrain. Could you please comment on its technical climbing ability vs the Trance X and its Maestro suspension? At over 60YO I’m more interested in climbing up gnarl the descending. Efficient and traction and that balance is what I’m looking for. I live in New England (have you ridden there?) and our terrain is probably polar opposite of yours. Endless rocks and roots, twisty tight trails littered with short punchy climbs and descents. No one’s pedals are unscathed and usually beat to a pulp. Trance X is a great deal compared to Yeti. Also considering (Gulp) regular Trance which might suit our terrain even better? Also learned on the Giant forum you can over shock it safely to just over 130mm travel with no frame interference.

The reason why some slow down is because of the global market. They are just trying to adjust to the circumstances to make sure they will actually manage to survive tomorrow. I got a 2022 Pivot Switchblade, but it isn't really a 2022 because it hasn't really changed since 2020(besides color). I'm pretty sure that's the same thing, just trying to make sure they survive tomorrow.

@a8f235
@a8f235 Год назад
@@bikersedge It does apply because both approaches are done because of the same reason: *_The global financial market place._* You said yourself that the changes are not big, and it is done this way to try and attract both ends of buyers. The buyers who may not have gotten the old version because of the financial market, and just simply someone looking for something they have not tried before or what ever. The smaller changes are because of uncertainty in just the overall global market, and if someone make too big changes, that can be too big at this given moment in time.

How does this compare to a Inis Ripmo and which bike would choose ?!?
@bikersedge
@bikersedge Год назад
They're pretty similar in terms of intended application. Your best bet will be to watch our All Mountain showdown. that compares the 130 to the Ripmo. then come back here and see how this compares to the 130.

How'd you compare this bike to the 2022 orbea rallon? Going up and down?
@bikersedge
@bikersedge Год назад
That’s an interesting one. The Rallon didn’t come to mind when I was making this video. While the Rallon is on the all mountain side of the enduro category I still think it’s significantly more capable than this. Lots more travel and slacker geo.

How does this compare to the trance x 29? Thanks
@bikersedge
@bikersedge Год назад
I see the Trance X as a long travel trail bike. The 140 is closer to an all mountain bike.

Would you upgrade your 130LR for the new 140?
@bikersedge
@bikersedge Год назад
I don't have my 130 anymore but if I did, I'd 100% make the switch. The 140 suits my preferences much better.

Funny thing is a lot of bike companies are going back to their original suspension designs. Today to much gimmicky ideas that serves no purpose other than trying to sell the bike. Is this just a coincidence? In my opinion Jamis MP2 suspension is the best. They have stuck to this design since the 90s. With a few minor tweaks here and there.

Is it worth the upgrade from a 2021 SB140LR?
@bikersedge
@bikersedge Год назад
Completely different style of bike. This is a replacement/upgrade option from the 130. As far as I know the 27.5 sb140 doesn’t have a replacement yet.

The real question is to only own the 140LR or a 120 and a 160 2 bike quiver lol

Throw a 160E in there while you're at it!

@@bikersedge I sold a buddy that exact quiver 160e and 140LR....best of both worlds. You and I both ride XL, both own 130LR and agree that the 140LR is a refined bike with improved feel.. Your description sounds like what I would describe my coiled 130LR....great videos 👊

@@bikersedge Sounds silly. What would you race it in. Great review
@bikersedge
@bikersedge Год назад
It might be silly-It's just their tagline. Most of their bikes have a pretty fast, firm, racy feel rather than a plush and playful feel. This bike seems to get away from that race feel though.
