YI 4K Action Camera first impressions and Hero 4 Comparison.

amzn.to/29AvBBh I just received the Yi 4k action cam from my pre-order a few months ago. There was no tracking or now shipping information, it simply showed up. The camera feels well made and the battery is noticeably larger than my hero 4 black edition. The touch screen is very easy to use and very responsive and controls in general are easier to use than a hero 4.
Build quality is in the same category as the hero 4 so if you plan on taking it into extreme weather or water, you'll need a case. I'm still on the fence about image quality.
My first impressions are:
The field of view isn't as wide as my hero 4 back
Size is almost Identical
Screen on the back of the Yi is beautiful
Audio is good, but the USB audio option on the hero is better
Video quality is similar though hero 4 has more contrast
I'll post more as I get a chance to test these two cameras out. The hero 4 is getting a run for the money with the Yi 4k action camera, but there are a few trade offs.

Yi - not Y-I. Like Y as in Ying and "ee". Love how you always find a way to butcher names :D (j/k). Really looking forward to this cam for my racing/acro quad. The previous Yi was pretty dope for like $60 with all its scripts for higher bitrates etc. Wasn't as crisp as a Gopro 4 silver/black, but still better than a Session at 25Mbit. Already seen some footage from the Big Whoop drone racers Jet and A_Nub, who got this from the first batch and it looks real promising.

About microphone - I read that it's possible to connect bluetooth mic to Yi camera.

Thanks for the first impression video. I'm really interested in this action cam. It is more around my budget for a small action cam as opposed to the GoPro. How is the video for night time use?

Just like the gopro it gets grainy in darker environments. If you plan on shooting in really dark areas, you'll probably want a light of some kind.

I have been using my GoPro Black 3 with the HDMI out to an external recorder. +onelonedork question for you, do they use the USB as an HDMI out somehow? Not even sure how that would be possible. I am waiting for a company to jump on NDI and add that to one of these really affordable cameras, I am sure that is a bit far fetched for today's market. Thanks for the demo and I am excited to see the quality tests from this camera, it looked good side by side. +ChungDha has been discussing the SJ5000 a bunch which is only 1080p. I wonder why external audio in has not been done more on these lower cost cameras as that would be great for vloggers. Just as you are using the GoPro with the USB to Microphone setup.

Unfortunately you loose the hdmi output. The single USB port only seems to work for data and charging. On the positive side, the boot up time and WiFi live video are 10 times better via cell phone or tablet. Latency on my s7 via WiFi is in the 20 to 30 millisecond range, so if you only need the monitor for remote viewing, your good to go, but no external recording.

The Yi HD 1080p camera can use USB to give a video output (I think it's just SD composite for FPV and not HD, though) which has no lag, but it also has an HDMI port (which lags a little) & no LCD. They added this feature in a firmware update. Don't know if the Yi 4K supports HDMI output through USB, but I would imagine that it at least still has some kind of USB video out, even if it's just a standard def composite for a monitor or FPV.

Thanks Deejay and John both make perfect sense. It would be cool IF you could use it as a 4k webcam but USB 2.0 couldn't transport the data. Also device drivers are a major issue for 2nd tier companies. Even GoPro has problems with drivers at times.

Quick update to the conversation. I just updated the firmware to version 1.0.9 and now Under "advanced" in video mode, I have an AV out on/off selection option. So I would guess John is right, you probably could use the older AV out cable with the new camera. Now if only that could allow that to be used as an audio input, I'd be happy.

would you please compare lens frame diameter? looking to get adapter / filter for yi 4k; hoping that the size is the same, so I can buy hero4 filter.

Hi, nice video! I too bought this camera but have a couple questions maybe you can offer some assistance to me and others. First, all I get is batch of 1 minute (approx) single videos and not one long single video for each event. Second, my Image Stabilization, Auto Low Light and Adjust Lens Distortion are grayed out (not available) Same for you? I did email support at YI for the single minute videos and they said its normal and will come together during editing. Rather vague for my needs but I am assuming I need to become an expert video software user before being able to have fun with this camera. Thanks in advance for anything you can find out. Mark

Basically some extra features like Image Stabilization, auto low light, and adjust lens distortion are only available in certain settings and modes. If you are shooting "4k ultra" all three of those features will be grayed out. Switch over to 1080p and you'll have all three of them available. This is because the camera is using the extra pixels on the sensor to stabilize, add light, and correct distortion. As for file splitting. Mine splits files at the 4GB mark which is a limit of the file system used on the card (FAT32), this gives you about 7 to 8 min worth of video in each clip at the cameras data rate. If you would like to correct that problem, format your memory cards in the camera and your cards will be formatted to exFAT. Also, note that when the camera creates a file it also creates a smaller version of the file with the label "_thm" that version of the file is used for cell phone reviews and is basically a low-resolution copy of the actual recording.

Awesome!! Thanks so much. I will check into those suggestions shortly. I am formatting my sd micro cards in the camera, but occasionally it flashes "Slow Card" at me while filming. I am looking into a faster/better sd card? Not sure if 64gb or a 128gb would be better but I will ask at the local camera store. Again, thanks for taking the time to help. Mark

I've had good luck with these amzn.to/29MWow8 from PNY as well as these amzn.to/29MWd3V from Samsung. I actually like the PNY a little bit better because the read speeds are 85 to 90MB/s which means moving footage from your card to your computer is much faster.
