You should totally visit the Yiddish Book Center in Massachusetts! July 14-17 this year would be a particularly excellent time: the Book Center will be hosting the fifth annual Yidstock festival of new yiddish music.

That ALONE is worth the trip! Does that mean you're the only Jew in Mongolia? What a koved (honor)!

when it comes to permanent folk (not counting Peace Corp volunteers) I think I am one of perhaps 3. Allegedly there is an Israeli dry cleaner. But if you ever wanna do an episode in Mongolia, you've got yourself a willing guide :D

Yiddish in Israel is not 'beyond' what is in the diaspora. Yiddish is a diasporic language and is systemically marginalized in Israel and celebrated in the diaspora

Why didn't you go to Bnei Brak? There would be plenty of Yiddish speakers there.

Around 1993 or so, I interviewed for a position as a security guard at that bus station which at the time was FINALLY being completed after sitting as an empty shell for many years. I didn't get the job and a year later returned to the US, a move which I've never regretted. Took me many decades to come to the realization that I love Israel but Israelis, not so much.

Josef Trumpeldor I will personally petition the authorities to rename all the streets in the country that have been named after you.

Josef Trumpeldor Well obviously you are Josef trumpeldor I was making a point. You can say that you didn't relate to the Israelis in two aviv, but making such a general statement for all Israelis was malicious. Stay in the us. Edit : obviously you are NOT Josef trumpeldor... Writing on a phone is a bitch.

No, Josef Trumpeldor is my youtube username, chosen because he is one of my favorite Jewish heroes of the Zionist era. Being American born and raised, I don't relate well to Israelis even though I am Jewish and so are they. My Hebrew is still fluent, so that wasn't the problem. I served in the army, we did have that in common. I simply said that I didn't like them. Why is that malicious?

Josef Trumpeldor Yes that is what I meant, see edit in previous comment. I have lived in the US for 17 years (as a resident)I am now an Israeli citizen since 2001 but even though I felt uncomfortable there, I never described (US) Americans as hypocrites, full of themselves and living in a island, completely ignorant of the outside world. I realize that culture is something that transpires through every aspect of every individual, it does not define his/her character. I used to say that the US is the best country in the world.... for us citizens. It is obviously one if the greatest countries in the world anyway but it is not always enough.. So what I am saying is that although you couldn't acclimate yourself to the people, it is somewhat disappointing to read your words generalizing with an entire nation. Well...it's your opinion and I have to respect that, I don't have to agree though. Israel was created just 70 years ago, and its people have changed, grown, became assertive financially and thus less paranoid of its future. I am sometimes annoyed by the lack of graciousness, here but it is a lot better than just 10 years ago and it constantly improves. Your original comment is not surprising to the average Israeli, we know what you mean. The thing is that this being read by others not familiar with Israel potentially will be turned off. There is enough hostility against israel, no need to add to it. חג פורים שמח...והכי חשוב,מאחל לך יום העצמאות ה-70 נפלא !!

The last thing I would do in Israel, is looking for Yiddish speakers and books. I want to hear Hebrew and read Hebrew books.
