I think FS1 its more Alcatrazz Era, I like it more than HS3/4. but I try to not fall in gas for that.....I have HS3/4 loaded pickguard, and another with Fury's (that I dont like)... and I appreciate a lot the advantage to be noiseless, so finally I keep HS. I am 55 yo bedroom player and in my 2 square foot "rockstar room" there are electric interferences like a nuclear central LOL!
The FS1 is not to noisy it seems but i have to experiment it again. It is a more versatile pickup as you can play classic rock (Dire Straits, Pink Floyd), funk, blues... The best is to have to guitars with different pickups. Also the FS1 is not so expensive. The HS3/4 are great indeed!
And early David Gilmour. Is by far the best single coil ever made but damn it’s noisy with a lot of gain. But a noice suppressor will take care of that”problem”.
Great demo that captures the true difference between both pickups. I've always liked the fullness of th FS-1 bridge but hated the noise. The HS-3 is nice and quiet, and handles gain ever well but has substantially less power than the FS-1. But it also leaves more strat snap. I've discovered in my own experimentation with various single coils from many brands that if you have too much output you lose a lot of the traditional snap that strats are known for. The HS series, 2, 3, and 4 keep the snap. I tend to prefer a slightly hotter bridge pup than for middle and neck, so I would put a Virtual Solo in the bridge which is noiseless with a Heavy Blues 2 in the neck and an Area 67 in the middle. Or, a heavy Blues 2 in bridge and neck and Area 67 middle. I haven't been a fan of Yngwie's tone since he switched to Seymour Duncan, but I suspect there is more to it than the pickups. I've tried the set on a YJM strat and they sounded ok, but I was fine with the old HS-3 set.
I've found lately that a controlled split on HS-2 and HS-4 gives me the best of both worlds. I always liked the HS-2 with a lot of gain, but the controlled split gives better clarity and a little more output. I start at 38k. It's important that the red wire is hot to get the best sound. FWIW
HS3s are forgotten pickups now from Dimarzio's own perspective since Yngwie ditched em. You won't see too much buzz about it these days. More so with the HS4 ( YJM models ) if they are still sold. Matters only to Yngwie purists. Too bad huh? It was really his sound. Now he says it wasn't that good, was only only"half a pickup" in terms of output. Said that he only used it because it cancelled his hum.I think he used it because he liked the tone. I prefer the HS3s to the Furies. If find the SD's too aggressive and hot, dirty even. When he started promoting the SDs and started discrediting the pickups he used and loved for so many years, I said to myself "yeah right". I never bought the Duncans. And not his Fender OD either.
Oh man the HS3 was instant Yngwie. The FS1 sounded okay but once I heard the HS3 it just had that shimmer, quack, and string noise that made Yngwie's tone iconic.
Nice. I think one thing worth doing though is making one change to the settings for the HS3: max the the DOD. (I believe Yngwie almost always had it about 50% with the fs1 and full blast with the hs3, he probably was constantly switching it slightly though.)
You play beautifully. Thank you for this comparison. To my ear, they sound very similar. Is there a noticeable difference in hum between the FS-1 (a true single coil) and the HS-3 (a stacked humbucker)? Also, do you know when Yngwie used the HS-2 pickups?
Thank you! The FS-1 can have hum and hiss if you play without a noise suppressor and too close to the amplifier. Except that i prefer the FS-1 that is beefier and fuller than the HS-3. I don't know the HS-2 that seemed to be a prototype, nor the YJM Fury pickup.
@@GuillaumeVrac have you tried to wire the HS-3 split to a single? couterintuitively it also ends up having more output when split and should get you sounding much closer to what the fs-1 brings.
Je suis un maniac de Malmsteen. ça fait toujours plaisir de découvrir un congénère ! Sinon, le FS1 a plus de gain. En tout cas, ça donne envie d'essayer.
Just came across this video.. interesting You can tell the HS-3’s had less gain, since it’s less powerful than the FS-1. But I dig that. I have 80’s HS-2’s in the neck, and 80’s HS-3’s in the bridge in 2 of my Strats, (‘73-‘74) and I really like the way it sounds through my ‘71 50w Marshall, with OD. I thought of getting the FS-1’s, but went with the HS-3’s since I have quite a noisy dinosaur rig.. lol But man.. it sounds exact to all old YJM, and sounds great for really any Strat/marshall sound. I don’t have any good recording equipment, so my videos were done with just a lame iPhone, and it doesn’t do the tone much justice at all-but in the room? Fantastic tones!! Maybe one day I’ll get some decent recording gear just to let others hear what I’m hearing in the room better.. But I’m quite busy, and don’t know where to even begin ..oh well. HS-3’s and 2’s for me! I never tried any noise suppression.. I suppose I’m too scared to go that route..
Thank you for that detailed comment it’s really interesting. I would recommend you to use a noise suppressor. I’ve never used the DiMarzio HS-2, but I like I would like to try it one day. When is the DOD is pushed really hard the FS1 would make some noise. It’s maybe better for clean tones. But once you master all those elements, you can nail heavenly tones. Greetings
The HS2’s can be heavenly as well.. along with the HS3. They actually allow a bit of that stratty tone to come out, which I’m a fan of. But I believe you.
I don’t know, and I kind of doubt it? But they do sound a bit different to me.. Older technology? Maybe a different manufacturer of the parts they bought to make them?
Man it's a great idea, and great playing, but a rosewood and maple fingerboards are quite different sounds, and those old alder 79 bodies and maybe Japan basswood are different, so it's not a true "laboratory conditions" test 🤓 but great playing and thank you, I've never heard the FS-1 🤔
Hi Guillaume Vrac, Thank you for good comparison and sharing of your settings. BTW, what exactly is "Wall Of Sound Celestion G12-65 speaker simulator" in your description? Is it any kind of effector? or plug-in?
Listened it a few times with headphones loud not watching the video. The HS3 has more definition in the high register and attack, but more muddy in low register. I preferred the FS1 overall for tone but i also like the picking attack of the HS3. I don't know what pickups yngwie used at which time, all i know is, his guitar tone was best on the marching out album. He is unique, but, well, he didn't really explore much outside his own genre, which is a shame, because the album inspiration showed he can do a lot more than harmonic minor licks..
Hi, do you think FS-1 in the neck and HS-3 in the bridge position of a strat would be cool combination. No middle pickup, 3-way switch. Thanks in advance.
FS1 outputmv 160, hs3 outputmv 93, go figure. If you can handle the noise, get fs1, hs3 is the most non forgiving pickup ever. It sounds godly with lots of boost from pedals but stand alone its so weak. Iscv2 (jem middle, voiced like hs2) and injector neck models are good for yngwie style as well.
Are you using 1960AX cabinets (greenbacks)?!?!?! If so, why? Wouldn’t be better 1960A? I’ve just purchased the 1960AX to reach the Yngwie tone as well, but I am not sure about it…
Hey there! Do you happen to know if your grey Dod or this one, have a 120pF cap in the feedback of the opamp? I am having a custom one built and it seems that yellow models had 25pF, while the grey didnt even have one (according to some sources, others say it has the 120pF). Thanks!
@@alexissanchez1321 yeah well since JHS pedals published their hour long video on the pedal and its variations, I dont really care about the values anymore haha 🤣 they were all different
Je partage ton avis, sachant que le micro change beaucoup le son d'une guitare, en plus du bois, de la touche etc... Ils ne s'appellent pas Fat Strat pour rien !
Actually HS-3 needs full volume and gain to really shines, and then it’s distortion heaven. But at lower gain it seems dull in comparison with other pickups
@@GuillaumeVrac i think the combination of plexi and DOD250 together does do the magic, however FS1 works well even without boosting. again, for Yngwie's tone HS3 is a classic. I'm wondering if the live gig with Jeff Scott Soto on red strat was HS3 or still FS1. cheers!
@@RobSol yes the tone of the two pickups are similar. What also is very crucial is the speaker. Until Trilogy included Yngwie used Celestion G12 65 speakers, that is an important ingredient of his early tones. From Odyssey until nowadays he plays with G12 T 75. As for the FS-1 he used it in Steeler and Alcatrazz, then switched to the HS-3 during the tour that followed "No Parole From Rock'n'Roll". But i'm not sure if some of the guitars he played on Metallic Live were mounted with FS-1 though.
To be fair, I would say the two pickups have no big differences tone wise but FS1 is hotter and HS3 has hum cancelling. Thanks for sharing your views on it.
@@GuillaumeVrac for its price i would not mind the hum at all since i am only playing at home and not on big venues. Plus i use a noise gate anyway. My only problem is i can't find the fs-1 anywhere here where I live.
