That's great. Any effort beging made towards stronger arches is well worth it. Like with all yoga poses, you can't be expected to have it right the first few times you try it. Try practicing the tree pose next to a wall - using it for support when you loose your balance. Sometimes even just knowing the wall is there to catch you can improve your balance dramatically!

Flat foot sufferer & I like these suggestions very much. I practice with both lifted toes & arches regularly it also helped me strengthen my knees.

Thank you for a practical way to incorporate this into "normal" Yoga poses, it is a definite addition to teaching skills to be able to share this with the whole class while helping all, flat footed or not! Namaste!

thanks....until I was 50, my very flat feet didn't bother me; now I get pain in knees and ankles from years of excessive strain on the joints. Be warned! Fix your flat feet before it's too late. Good luck. I'm going to try to be consistent in my exercises, now. I hope I can make them better.

Another effective exercise is getting a towel and scrunching it up with your feet, when your feet get stronger you can put a weight on the end of the towel to add resistance to the exercise. So start with the towel laid out flat and then slowly scrunch it up to a close, then pull it flat out again.

I enjoyed the simple ideas that can be put into action with just a little discipline, and the usefulness of one foot exercise can be used for multi-tasking also. Esther does not allow one to over think this suggestion.

The first position you showed is Veerasan (if I remember correctly). You can also flip over and stretch your arms behind. This asana is called Supta Veerasan. You can do this even after having food and helps the lower back as well. Thanks for your help. God Bless.

It's hard to strengthen ligaments/tendons because of their structure. They are not very elastic and if you have damaged them in the past (like stretching them ie dislocation) they are not very likely to go back to their original shape. Try strengthening your quadriceps and hamstrings EVENLY. This should help to stabilise and strengthen your knees. Try the chair pose with you back against a wall. Focus on pressing down evenly through all four corners of your feet.

this is great I got toldover 14 years ago I had flat feet and was never given any help for it apart from to wear insoles which don;t work unless you wear them 24/7, Ill try this n see wot happens , thanks

Tree pose or balance poses are especially difficult when thinking about the inner arch.

I have stretched ligaments in my foot from a former broken ankle so can be a little flat footed - I know you're not a doctor but (!) would this routine help with that too, Esther?

I have tried your first exercise, which is helpful. However, standing on one leg is a bit difficult, my balance is so out-of-wack. I tried a variation on two of your exercises. I crumple a piece of paper. While free standing, I pick the paper up with my right toes and move it toward the left foot, and then I do the reverse with my left foot. I believe that this is what I'll have to do for now, until I become more advanced. What do you think?

@janagroepl The exercises are to help strengthen her foot muscles so that the flatness of her foot doesn't cause pain or imbalance while doing the poses. The arch itself isn't going to magically reform with these poses.

@intellegence63smart there are many things that can be done to help reshape your arches after your bones fuse with structural therapy, it isn't fun, quite painful at times actually but the techniques Esther has used are are very similar to the ones used by structural and Russian massage therapists Ive spent the last year studying anatomy and kinesiology, with orthodics and persistence you can make the body do anything

Is it possible to over do the first kneeling pose? I have been doing 10 minutes in the evenings. Can I do 10 minutes in the morning get the benefit faster?

@unciase1 No I'm sorry, I've M.S. In Biology and once you get to 21 years of age (avg) the bones all fuse, and calcify because they finish growing (that's why you have less bones when you are older then when you were a child, the 2 bones that make up your slanted part of the arch fuse and if they fuse incorrectly you are chronically stuck with flat foot. That's you you must strengthen your muscles and do excerses to get rid of Flat feet before 21 so they fuse properly.

@BHDHacker2 Flat feet (also called pes planus) is in which the arch of the foot collapses, with the entire sole of the foot coming into complete or near-complete contact with the ground. In some individuals (an estimated 20-30% of the general population) the arch simply never develops in one foot (unilaterally) or both feet (bilaterally). This is most likely to be in your genetics if you do get it. .

Lifting the arches might make your feet smaller, but probably not by much. If you are overweight, losing weight could make the feet smaller. But big feet = more stability :)

o my gawd i have heel splints and i just got done with P.E at my school and I CANT WALK ill just fall they hurt soooo bad and iv already cried like 4 times i need help!!!!!!!

It is stretching and pushing on the front of the foot which helps create the arch. If your front is stiff and shortened, it pulls the arch straight. In virasana you can not just sit, but also actively press legs, including feet, into the ground.

When you have flat feet, the first pose is not even possible! Feet stay arched in 45 degrees angle!

probably more than 80 percent of people have some type of flat feet, i'm yet to see a person standing bare foot with complete arches!

Abhijit Menon it could. Most likely you want to consider calf strength training and forefoot running. Ask your doc and ask for a sports doc referral during your yearly check up.

@MsChitown911 Consider yourself lucky I know a couple of people who had this procedure done and never regained use of their feet :( I researched it when considering it for myself, that's how I came across massage therapy as an effective alternative

+Kansas Highlights Totally true. Even if you work up to it, or already have flexible knee joints, it's definitely overly hard on your knees. So, she also said you could sit on something to reduce strain on your knees. Anyway, it seems to me that the only purpose is to massage your feet. I think there are better ways. I mean, this is intended as a 10-minute yoga pose? That doesn't make a ton of sense to me. Use a golf ball or tennis ball and roll your foot/arch over it to do essentially the same thing without any other strain.

That's why you use the block. You shouldn't feel anything much in the knees in virasana when performed correctly. Good pose.
