This was the perfect video for a beginner like me unlike some others I have seen. Using your mom instead of like an equally fit (to you) model really helps because if your mom can do it, anyone can! She's so funny and you do such a good job of being understanding of the fears of beginners who have never stood on their hands before and patient. So thank you!

Ok y didn't I find ur channel before.... I'm kinda teaching myself gymnastics cuz my mom won't let me go to real gymnastics so I thought I could teach myself, I'm starting off with stretches and the basics, I watch alot of gymnastics youtube channels and most of them don't give enough steps for a handstand cuz obviously I don't wanna fall on my head but I love ur channel! Thx so much u just earned another sub

I have done yoga at a beginner level on and off for a couple of years. I have a number of health issues - osteoarthritis being one of them, but I have just (finally) mastered the headstand and am trying for the handstand. I'm 55 years old and thank you for this video. It's great! and you and your mum are an inspiration!😃

thanks Shana .... my almost 6 year old wanted to learn how to do handstands .... i could do them when i was young but am 50 this year with spinal damage so couldn't show her, so looked up on youtube and found your tutorial. It was very helpful; she was giggling as she could see her progress. I told her lots of practice now each day until you get stronger and stronger in your arms and tummy (core). Your mum does look amazing! x

I appreciate how you had another person (perfect that Mom was willing and she must already practice yoga -- she was so calm and poised!) demo while you explained and helped her with alignment/position; helpful because the cues you were able to give her are probably things that would normally occur, but might not get included were you to be talking and doing, such as the overarching, or being too close in the initial down-dogs (just naming a couple). Your video was adorable, fun AND gave good instruction. I will definitely practice today! I love the family aspect! Thanks for posting!

Hey lady, I just discovered your video, going to check out some more. I would love to learn a handstand but I had a pretty back neck injury while I was training martial arts. One guy literally dropped me on my head. Now I cant push myself to do a back or front roll because of that. I am still going to try a handstand and I was wondering if arm strengh plays a biggest role in it(apart from balance of course) Thanks for the video

wow! that sounds terrible! see if this walking up the wall handstand is okay on your neck and shoulders and if this is all manageable, i have kick up, press up, fly up, float up, and everything else up videos to follow. in time, hopefully your injury will heal completely. :/

Pascale Signer, thanks! :D as to the handstands, fear is your biggest obstacle. get over that and everything is possible! if you are afraid of falling, start with the first one with the leg low to catch you (just in case) until you are totally comfortable moving on. and have fun. :)

5 years late, but for others with the same problem, you can start learning the crow first. Then you're not upside down, but still putting all your weight on your arms. This gives you the strength and confidence needed.

Wow, this video was so fun and funny to watch! Thanks!! :) Ive been trying to learn how to do a handstand and surprisingly enough Ive been doing the same first pose you showed with both legs up... However, I am going to try to do the others. You made the pose where your leg and head touch look sooo easy, but when your mom did it, it looked more realistic for a beginner haha (which would be me trembling like she did haha) and I really enjoyed the last pose, your mom is a good sport! Thanks for sharing :-) I am going to go try them now... hihihi

@nakayla barlow, youtube won't let let me respond to you or tag you. :/ anyway, start with the first one, as your foot is only a little bit off the floor and can easily catch you if feel like you will fall. and if arm strength is a big worry, maybe even start just with downward facing dog...and do that until you can hold it for 30 seconds or more. handstand on the wall has very similar dynamics to downward facing dog... then, take this video step by step. you don't have to do the whole thing at once...just do the first handstand until it's easy...then when you are ready (in a day, a week, a month, whatever), try the second one, etc. build up to this and you will find yourself stronger and less scared. :)

Raghavan Vadlamani it's really a matter of how strong and comfortable you are with the practice. my mom hadn't done this in her life ever and she just popped up and did it. other people may have to take it one step at a time...first doing the first handstand for a few days or even weeks or how ever long until that is comfortable..and then moving up to the next handstand, etc. and after this, there is a whole world of more, cool handstands to play with! :)

@@francine5207 that's great that you can do a headstand! ❤️ it will help to an extent because a lot of the dynamics are the same, but because of the addition of the straight arms in handstand, the two poses are really quite different. 🙏

Hi, Shana! Thanks a lot for the instructions and advices! How do you know you are ready to try it? I mean, how do you know your arms and lower back are ready for this? I tried in the past and always fell... pretty painful.

hi beth9015, my suggestion is to take this step-by-step. maybe at first you only do the first exercise. then when that comes easily, you try the next one, and so on. you don't have to do all of them at once. remember that yoga should never hurt. so, always be mindful if you feel any pain. always come down before you fall down. for example, in the very first exercise, the bottom foot lifts just enough that you can easily come back down if it's too hard. do what works...and what doesn't hurt. :)

This video is helpful I haven't used the wall for a handstand since elementary school and i forgot how to hold my body up and support myself up and I also forgot that you can't walk up the wall with your feet you have to put your leg up hold then put the other one up so I will definitely be trying this out tomorrow I have confidence it will work

Me! Maybe time for a follow up with more exercises ? I am excited to try these ones but also still feeling pretty unhopeful that I'll ever be able to handstand - have been trying so long but generally people's tutorials assume far too much strength.

Thanks to your mom for being such a great sport. You guys are beautiful and the tip was a much needed tip. I never thought of this...I usually face the wall.. get on my hands and throw my legs at it full force...smh. While my way gets the job done it does nothing for strength and proper form. Thanks a million also to your mom for showing that its not as easy as it looks but can b done with some effort. :)

Happy ME don't lift your leg more than an inch or two off the wall and you won't fall backwards. you can also get someone to spot you if you are afraid. ☺

first master this stuff in the video about walking up the wall. then, next is yoga handstand kick-ups to the wall - shana meyerson YOGAthletica. after that, yoga handstand in the middle of the room instruction - shana meyerson yogathletica. :) but master one before moving on to the next. it doesn't help to rush this process...

I've actually never commented on a RU-vid video before :S but I've been trying to learn to do a handstand by putting my feet up against the wall and not making any progress. I watched your video and figured out what I was doing wrong (mainly not keeping my toosh high). Tried it again and it's much easier! I'll be doing it sans wall in no time :) Thanks!

Shana, if only you were in the UK. I've recently decided to try Yoga after a resounding recommendation from a friend, but not one to go into battle blind, I thought I'd do some research. Even though I'm a Pilates girl, I have always wanted to do a handstand. Being 5'10" the ground always seemed a terribly long way down, but now I've tried this I feel SO MUCH more confident. I only wish you were in London so you could teach me yourself. It may only be a RU-vid video, but your sparkling joie de vivre is ridiculously inspirational. Thank you so much for sharing this. P.S. Your Mum is absolutely extraordinary! I can see where you get your awesomeness from ;)
